Throughout the centuries human beings have greatly developed their capacity to use Nature for their own benefit in order to achieve a more comfortable, pleasant life. But at the same time their activity is becoming more and more of a risk for nature, which so generously guarantees their survival. It is no longer questionable that climatic change is clear proof that this risk is near.

Design is one of the exponents of humans’ transforming and creative capacities, and it also represents a first class cultural and economic value. Creative factors contribute to boost economic life and may play an essential role in the improve-ment and protection of the environment.

But design and creative capacity may become a horse running on behalf of ir-responsible consumption and industries or, on the contrary, may be of invaluable help to contribute towards human activities more in line with preserving life on Earth as we have known it up to now.

From the beginnings of design as a project discipline, the concern for the effects of industrial activities on our environment has been constant among many designers. From Breuer’s writings in the Bauhaus in 1927 on a rational use of green materi-als, or Buckminster’s Dymaxion as a paradigm for sustainable materials. To the increasingly common concern of young architects and designers in search of new more sustainable materials to reduce the environmental impact of their designs.

The time has come to move from good ideas to good deeds. Looking for the best examples and practices to spread them among society, companies, universities, institutions and the professional designers themselves. In order to turn what to-day is an exceptional practice into an essential requirement to promote, request or carry out design.

To put design at the service of people and at the service of society is one of Di-mad’s power ideas since its origins and it has also been one of the reasons for the establishment of this European Environmental Design Award, promoted by out-standing public figures and institutions in the fields of architecture, design, train-ing and the environment. An award that has been born with four basic goals:

I. To value and foster actions carried out in Europe by companies, institutions or designers which are particularly outstanding examples of good design from an environmental viewpoint.

II. To raise awareness among companies, public institutions, designers and soci-ety of the importance of allocating sustainability values to their designs and products.

III. To make society at large and productive sectors in particular aware of the im-portance of conceiving design as a welfare and wealth trigger and as carrier of cultural values and a utility.

IV. To turn Madrid into a benchmark for sustainable design. To place the Central de Diseño and Matadero Madrid at the centre of the design values included in the three previous goals.

These objectives have managed to bring together such different entities as the Madrid Designers’ Association (DIMAD), the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, the Association Sustainabil-ity and Architecture (ASA), the Foundation Arte y Derecho (Art and Law) and the European Social Fund through the Business School EOI, Escuela de Negocios. All the above institutions contribute with their means, ideas and human resources to select and acknowledge every year the best projects that:

• Promote improvements in the field of architectural design and sustainable building.

• Introduce new products or changes in existing products, to improve our daily life.

• Foster the publishing of books and publications with innovations in their elabora-tion and with environmentally-related contents.

• Develop graphic design campaigns or actions promoting environmental values.

• Lead business, institutional or private initiatives than include design and the envi-ronment among their main elements.

All the actions are precisely covered within the five categories of this Award: Build-ing, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Communication Campaigns and Initiatives.

In this first edition, 146 projects from all over Europe have taken part in the above categories. This can be considered a reasonable success, taking into account the number and quality of the projects registered.

This first edition, covered and organised from DIMAD by an enthusiastic group of design practitioners who have made the Scientific Committee’s work possible, and the Jury who have selected 4 projects as absolute First Prizes and have awarded Spe-cial Mentions to other 7 projects.

Combining aesthetic values, innovation, usefulness and viability, environmental pro-tection and social values. We are convinced that the projects registered and the final selection of winners are in themselves good exponents of the significance our society already places on environmental concerns. The quality of the work speaks of how Design can transmit this concern to industries, improving aspects of our everyday life that may contribute towards a better future.

BEST_ED_1_EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD_PREMIO EUROPEO DE DISEÑO Y MEDIO AMBIENTE

For the last few years IDAE has upheld the strategy of managing to have energy efficiency unavoidably integrated with design as a further attribute, added to the defining ones relating to aesthetics, functionality or the senses.Behind every design product there lies a reflection and a need to meet. Exactly the same lies behind efficiency, and probably the same renewed way of looking at the world, i.e., life.

Energy is a scarce, precious resource, and wasting it goes against common sense, intelligence, aesthetics and, I would even say, ethics. We must turn the energy efficiency motto –i.e., get more with less- into a paradigm of our way of life, and a question, as I said before, of common sense, intelligence and opportunity to carry on progressing, achieve a better quality of life and build up a common future for everybody.

Thus, the concept of ECODESIGN comes in, in all its power; i.e., the optimisa-tion and design of products, both regarding efficiency in energy consumption when it refers to products requiring power to work, and life cycle.

If the concept of design is new, so is that of energy efficiency. Energy efficiency policies and the promotion of renewable sources of energy enjoy today –both internationally and certainly in Spain- a strategic value which was unthinkable only three decades ago; environmental concern seemed then to affect only those considered naïve who had started to theorise on the need to strike a balance between economic growth, energy consumption and respect for Nature.

I would like to point out here that, in any case, it is no longer a question of willingness or awareness. Everything related to ecological design requirements applicable to products that use power has been laid down in Royal Decree 1369/2007, transposing in Spain the European Directive on Ecodesign (Direc-tive 2005/32/EC), later amended by Directive 2008/28/EC.

These two directives have recently been recast into Directive 2009/125/EC [1], establishing ecodesign requirements for energy-related products; not just those for consumption as it was up to now. Later on, Regulation (EC) 66/2010 [2] ensures coordination between the design of these products and their ecological label of the European Union.

The aim is to create a single framework for the ecological design of products re-lated to energy that ensures efficiency and coherence, with a common approach for the whole EU. Besides laying down the minimum requirements to market the products, their environmental benchmarks are established regarding the most ecological products on the market.

Under the existing Directive on ecological design, this is already feasible for products relating to energy, which may enjoy public employment and/or tender and tax benefits.

The current publication presents the European Environmental Design Awards, envisaging them as a cultural value affecting the economy. In times of crisis we

[1] DIRECTIVE 2009/125/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND COUNCIL, of 21 October 2009, establishing a framework for the setting of ecode-sign requirements for energy-related products. Recast of Directive 2005/32/EC and Directive 2008/28/EC, which amended and expanded its scope to allow the Community ecodesign requirements to include energy-related products, not just those using energy.[2] Regulation (EC) 66/2010, of 25 November 2009, on the EU ecolabel, which ensures coordination between the EU ecolabel system and the estab-lishment of requirements within the scope of Directive 2009/125/EC.

need to build creative factors into production in order to increase productivity. All this, directly addressing the severe environmental challenges while at the same time maintaining our welfare standards.

The search for practical solutions that turn our life habits and our productive ways into more efficient, environmentally-friendly patterns is a social and economic need. And if we do find them, we must disseminate them as much as possible to serve as models; this is the main aim of the awards.

One of the essential goals of IDEA is to carry out awareness-raising actions targeting all sectors, thus contributing to building up a new energy culture based on sustainability.

We want to shake both the consumers’ and the manufacturers’ consciences, move them so that energy is appropriately dealt with, giving it priority in those aspects in which it is present in our lives, which are almost all of them. For this reason, and because design, creativity and art are means, like no other, to shake consciences through reflection and emotion, we are proud to take part in this initiative which rewards ECODESIGN.

Finally, I would particularly like to stress the need to incorporate design into so-called sustainable building. That is, the significant role architectural and space design may play in this process of the search for new solutions to achieve sustainable, bioclimatic buildings.

At IDAE, we think it is essential to foster measures that act on energy consumption in buildings, that help to achieve energy sustainability.

Buildings are constant energy consumers, right from the moment they are built, dur-ing their life cycle until they are demolished, in very significant amounts, while pro-ducing at the same time polluting emissions.

Just as a point of information, the building sector in Spain –per use and exploitation- represents around 20% of end-user energy consumption.

This energy consumption and the environmental impact related to it can and must be dramatically reduced, through a series of measures connected on the one hand with urban town planning and on the other, through the articulation of a series of strategies that contribute to considering energy as a starting point criterion when designing projects.

If everything in project is still made following conventional views, the city of tomor-row will still have to face the challenge of preserving quality of life and being commit-ted to our future. However, it is possible nowadays to plan and design introducing in the processes and projects, concepts and criteria that allow for a more rational use of energy and for urban environments more in line with sustainable development.

It is also possible, and I would say essential nowadays, to think that energy may become an essential part of project design criteria and of their conditioning consid-erations, gearing the dynamics of land use towards sustainability and a better use of resources.

Rau transformed a former 1950’s agricultural laboratory into the first CO2 neu-tral and (almost entirely) energy autonomous office in the Netherlands. By break-ing through the rigidity of the existing structure and adding an organic blob at the centre, the rejuvenated building got a friendly appearance that blends in with the surrounding nature reserve.

Rau’s intervention did not only give the building a new face, but fundamentally changed the user experience. Natural ventilation and the use of natural materials offer a balanced and healthy indoor environment.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD SUSTAINABLE BUILDING OUTSTANDINGIt is not often that so many qualities converge to award a first prize as is the case now: The team of architects and their long commitment to sustainability, the customer and his pioneering effort towards nature preservation, the commission itself and the decision to maintain a previous building that would be recycled into a new one with substantial reforms to achieve a balance with the environ-ment as is achieved here.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MERITHolland is a country in which the design of urban areas for children’s games has a long tradition linked to both social and plastic art experimentation. So the 2012Architecten proposal to use for one of them recycled pieces from wind-power generators comes as no surprise. The outcome is both novel and stimulat-ing. A path that is beginning to be used and that is offered here as an example of great formal and creative value.

Wikado is a design for a playground in Rotterdam made out of windmill pieces. Five (discarded) rotor blades are used to create a maze-like space with a panna –a type of ball game– court in the centre, placed on the existing concrete circle. Four towers are placed around it, each with a distinctive character. Between the towers there hangs a net which works as a climbing structure, but also prevents balls from ending up in the neighbours’ gardens.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MERITSpain’s Pavilion at the Zaragoza World Expo 2008 is one of the buildings that has received most awards in the last few years. Nevertheless, we did not wish to fail to highlight here how its formal values have come to the service of ideas of sustainability and respect for the environment. An example to follow and one that opens up paths to dispel the misconception that plastic art and environmen-tal creativity cannot go hand in hand along the same path.

The desire to reproduce the space of a forest, or of a group of bamboos on a layer of water, has formed the subconscious basis of the project. On the one hand there is the creation of a mechanism able to generate extraordinary pos-sibilities from the point of view of energy logic and environmental awareness, an essential and symbolic aspect for the Spanish Pavilion. On the other hand, one of the most attractive spaces one may encounter is transferred to the field of architecture.

Changing spaces, full of hints and nuances, in which concepts such as vertical-ity and depth play an essential role.

ROCA INNOVATION LAB (CONCEPT) AND BURATTI + BATTISTON ARCHITECTS (DESIGN) / ROCA SANITARIO S.A.

W+W combines functionality and water-saving benefits fusing Washbasin and WC.

The project W+W intends to fuse both appliances.Through the new Roca “water-reuse” technology, washbasin waste water fills

the toilet cistern, reducing water usage by up to 25% compared with the stand-ard toilet. An automatic cleaning system avoids bad smells and flushing bacteria into the cistern.

W+W is the choice when sustainability and good design are top priorities.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD INDUSTRIAL DESIGN MERITAn interesting product joining excellent execution quality and a smart solution to re-use washbasin water in the toilet cistern. Roca has managed to tune in with the increasing environmental awareness of Northern European markets by providing a very interesting solution, which, no doubt, will influence future conceptualisations for this type of product.

How much of a letter can be removed while maintaining readability? After long hours of research and work, the author managed to get a font that uses up to 20% less ink. To do so, extensive tests were carried out, which showed that the best results were achieved using small circles. The type selected had to be based on a widely used type face. Therefore the Vera Sans was chosen –a Verdana look-a-like under GNU license– as the basis of the Ecofont.

A communication website around it was set up which offered the Ecofont “Free to download, free to use”. Within two months after launch, the font was downloaded over 700,000 times!

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD GRAPHIC DESIGN CAMPAIGNS OUTSTANDINGEcofont is, first of all, a robust graphic proposal. A type face that keeps its care-ful, legible stroke in small bodies and large formats.

With this award to Ecofont, we are rewarding an idea’s efficiency. An idea that shows how some simple actions may translate into significant savings in our daily habits, a more sound use of raw materials and more rational consumption of manufactured products.

Reinicia is a project of electronic waste management that provides the citizen with a collection system for useless devices. Some of these devices can later be reused in other areas or institutions.

The plug is a symbol that unifies most electronic devices. The name “Reinicia” provides new life to devices that looked like having a single use.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN AWARD GRAPHIC DESIGN CAMPAIGNS MERITReinicia has a great fundamental quality. It says everything it has to say, nothing else. Neatly and clearly. What comes out of one end of the plug, goes into the other, restarting the process.

Ecology and communication also means avoiding unnecessary noise.

A sustainable design would be a design that not only doesn’t generate any but also diminishes existing waste. A design that, at a glance, shows its intention and invites people to change their habits. An excellent sustainable design would be one in which the only energy that is consumed is the creative type. The Head-board Pallet points to that direction.

Its aim is sustainability and functionality, without giving up aesthetic values. The pallet adapts perfectly to its new function only by changing its context.

This is why it is worth getting acquainted with some examples by those who are starting their way to-wards managing building resources which are friendlier with the environment: bioclimatic buildings, changes or improvements in the industry, ecological con-structions and restoration among others.

This publication is a reference for sustainable architecture in which thirty-two architects express their concerns and show us forty buildings where solutions that will soon be widely used are applied.

Garbage architecture provides a second life for found or thrown-away objects and operates on the borders of architecture, art and design, creating new prod-ucts from old materials. Origin for designs is found in the object itself, by listen-ing to its own composition, history, or local and social context. The authors do not start from a design, they need a problem to play with, 3D troubleshooting, and creative improvisation with whatever is locally available.

Waste materials lead the way to often unpredictable results. Wherever there is garbage, this work team can do research and workshops on creative recycling.

NEWLY DESIGNED WOOD FLOORING / 2009AUTHOR / COMPANY

FERNANDO SUBIRATS / DURA TARIMAS FLOTANTES, S.L.

In Dura warehouse, pre-cut wood sheets which have not passed the quality pa-rameters are stacked. After assessing the material and mixing the different lay-ers, the edge shows a new product: balanced and symmetrical boards for wood flooring. The 100 pallets stored and rejected can now produce over 25,000 m2 of wood flooring of various models.

The wood so far kept in factories, may finally have a new use.

MARÍA AMEZCUA (FINANCIAL CONTROL AND EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION DEPARTMENT) / DANIEL LARRALDE (PROJECT DEVELOPMENT) / FS ESTRUCTURAS, JORGE GARCÍA (INSTALA-TIONS) / CONTRUCCIONES EGARFE (CONTRACTORS)

Tot House originated in the design of economical housing for a middle class family in the Cintruenigo’s urban periphery, a small town in inland Spain with one of the major indexes of sun hours per year. Despite it being a usual standard concerning type, plan and dimensions, the authors tried to avoid common cli-chés by considering the different functional, typological and technological pos-sibilities currently on offer based on sustainable construction criteria.

The project Table Board derives out of the interest in using and recycling timber. Knots, cracks, stains, defects of wood that make them not usable, represent the main objective of the project.

Traditional methods of craftsmanship are used when carving each piece to ap-ply the finishes. The methods and techniques used such as gilding, engraving or tempera over gilding, intend to recover the tradition of Arts and Crafts.

Villa Uh1 grows out of the surrounding slope and interacts with the landscape eliminating the border between building and landscape. The idea was to mini-mize the impact of the construction while at the same time creating a new ty-pology. While designing the house the authors decided to create a patio so that questions of privacy and full access to the evening sun would easily be solved. The sedum roof drains rain water and provides good thermal insulation to the house which uses geothermal heating.

The main objective of Vitrohouse is to demonstrate that real sustainable archi-tecture should be made only by means of dry-assembled components. This will optimize the best use of resources, reduce waste to the maximum (or remove it completely), and decrease, also to the maximum, the energy consumed in its construction. At the same time, buildings may considerably extend their life cycle, since their components can be easily disassembled, repaired and reused as many times as one likes. In fact, Vitrohouse has an infinite life cycle.

Träd is not only a storage system, Träd is a shelter, a personal space where the children can carry out their fantasies and games. A place that allows them to feel safe, to learn and to imagine. That enchanted wood where one can dream of heroes and princesses...and live a thousand and one adventures.

The tree as an icon of wisdom, shelter and playground. Symbol of life and growth. Approach to an increasingly absent nature, as a comeback to traditional games towards imagination development, with no artifices, as a basis for the growth of the child’s personal world.

VICENTE PORRES AND JOSUÉ GAMONAL / NOVIEMBRE ESTUDIO

How much trash do humans throw away every day? Is trash really all we throw away? What if we could extend the life cycle of the objects we use in our dairy life? With Trash? the authors want people to think about the life of the objects, telling them that this cycle could be longer in a society that generates more and more garbage everyday.

Trash? is a garbage bag that can be used as a puff. It can be used indoors or outdoors, just fill it up with garbage and enjoy the seat.

Buy, enjoy, throw away and buy again seems to be all that modern society does. With Trash? one buys, enjoys, enjoys again and, to end the cycle, recycles the bag.

The Tuejar armchair is constructed from salvaged wood pallets and it has been designed ergonomically to achieve maximum comfort and practicality.

It is made by carpenters in a semi-industrial process, assembled individually. Furthermore, the imperfect form of the wood pallets gives the chair a unique finish and adds character. It is a new product that does not exploit natural re-sources, more specifically finite wood resources, providing functionality while being environmentally responsible.

OSCAR LHERMITTE

The concept of this project is to turn free daily newspapers into a sustainable product, designed by the consumer. The proposal is to make one’s own piece of furniture by collecting day by day these free papers. The “334” bench and “89” stool are made of 3 parallel bars of metal and many newspapers folded and stacked next to each other.

The challenge of this series is to recycle a product, but also to design furniture without using any screw, glue, soldering, etc. Making this furniture costs around 5 pounds, and some spare time.
