SUMARIO CONTENTS 9
Madrid is set to take centre stage in the art world once again,
having done so successfully for thirty-five years thanks to
ARCOmadrid, one of the most emblematic international contemporary
art creation events.
ARCOmadrid is a reassertion of art’s dynamism and strength, a
hotbed of talent and renewal, as well as a space in which to
contemplate original and surprising works.
With each passing year, ARCOmadrid has gradually metamorphosed into
an expression of freedom and artistic integration, a journey
through art’s most recent history that draws numerous collectors as
well as a public increasingly interested in the latest
trends.
Furthermore, the works exhibited in Ifema’s pavilions transport us
to a scenario in which there is an ever-fruitful exchange of ideas
between artist and public, a space that underlines the most
vanguard collecting.
Over the last thirty-five years, ARCOmadrid has successfully
adapted to its circumstances, even when these were adverse due to
times of crisis, navigating them with strength and determination
while upholding its focus on art as a social value. Thus,
ARCOmadrid is defined by the talent and renewal of those who have
made art their way of life.
As a member of IFEMA, the Fair Institution which houses
ARCOmadrid, it is an honour for the Madrid Region to welcome the
best galleries, the best artists, the most important collectors,
the best of a period undergoing constant transformation, that
projects the vast cultural wealth of both Madrid and our region
every February.
From our museums to each and every one of the exhibitions and
cultural initiatives organised by the Madrid Region that offer
quality and attractive culture.
Culture is a remarkable focal point from which to project the
Madrid Region, given that over four million of the visits to our
region are for cultural reasons. To continue to foster this social
and economic value is a challenge we must all accept, and fairs
such as ARCOmadrid contribute to this projection.
Over the 35 years of the Fair’s existence, Madrid has gradually
joined the great international art circuits, using ARCOmadrid to do
so.
The modern and the contemporary, returning artists; the historic
avant-garde and photography; installations and perspectives on a
new art concept, all coexist at ARCOmadrid.
The outstanding values of ARCOmadrid draw national and
international interest, as well, of course, as that of the Madrid
region. Hence, for yet another year the Region of Madrid’s ARCO
Award will recognise the work of these creators by acquiring one of
their works, to form part of the extraordinary Centro de
Arte 2 de Mayo collection.
I would like to congratulate ARCOmadrid organisers and employees,
who will bring together the world’s most prestigious galleries on
this anniversary that coincides with some excellent news: the
internationalisation of the fair for the first time ever outside
Spain is to take place in Lisbon, in spring under the ARCO
seal, reflecting the competitive spirit of IFEMA.
I encourage you to visit ARCOmadrid from 24 to 28 of February, as
it once again transforms our region into a benchmark in the art
world. We welcome you and hope you enjoy the Madrid region, its
extensive wealth of culture, heritage, leisure and gastronomy, as
well as the most cutting-edge and modern art at
ARCOmadrid.
CRISTINA CIFUENTES PRESIDENT OF THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF
MADRID
ARCOmadrid.
Dear friends,
35 years have gone by since that first edition of ARCO, the
Contemporary Art Fair that opened its doors in Madrid for the first
time in February 1982, while Enrique Tierno Galván was mayor.
Over these years of intense artistic activity in the city,
ARCOmadrid has represented a modern and liberalizing initiative,
positioning itself on the international contemporary art
scene.
From those initial 90 participating galleries in its early days, 35
years later we now have 221 galleries, 27 countries and hundreds of
thousands of visitors from Madrid, the rest of Spain and abroad,
who fill not only the fair each year, but also the city.
The Museums, Institutions and Art Centres that currently comprise a
vast art heritage, don their finest in our city in February. The
Fair’s exhibition agenda is completed with a programme of parallel
cultural activities for general enjoyment.
ARCO and Madrid have forged strong bonds throughout the
spaces, created for dialogue and as meeting points for thinkers,
creators, collectors, critics and gallery directors.
It is my wish and that of the entire city to congratulate
ARCOmadrid on its 35th anniversary and to thank it for the tribute
it wishes to pay to the city this year, transforming it into a
cultural bridge between Spain and the world.
Happy 35th Anniversary!
Queridos amigos y amigas,
pensadoras/es, creadores/as, coleccionistas, críticos/as y
galeristas.
mundo.
¡Feliz 35 Aniversario!
The International Contemporary Art Fair, ARCOmadrid, is opening its
doors at IFEMA for the 35th edition of this major event. As it does
every February, the city of Madrid will become the epicentre of
contemporary creation during the course of this event; undoubtedly
one of the most internationally famous platforms for the exchange,
popularisation and promotion of modern art.
ARCOmadrid has played an essential role in developing the
Spanish art market and art collecting, both institutionally and
privately. In recent years, an enormous effort has been made to
attract the attention of the international market: through the
implementation of various initiatives based on promoting dialogue
between galleries and collectors; the discovery of new artists;
delving deeper into the works themselves; and serious reflection on
art.
ARCOmadrid has not only earned the sector’s confidence in
this format, but also highlighted the need for a fair of this
nature in Spain. With a significant increase in the amount of
applications to take part, the International Contemporary Art Fair
stands as the best stage for commercialising works of art;
enhancing the image of galleries and artists; and promoting
culture.
It is a great honour to be part of such an event, which transforms
the Spanish capital into a powerhouse of international creativity
every February thanks to the joint work of IFEMA and the Madrid
Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services. I would like to thank
everyone who makes the celebration of ARCOmadrid possible, as
well as all those institutions, art centres and art spaces in the
city that make such a huge commitment to culture and creativity
every winter.
Having witnessed the track record of ARCOmadrid in recent years,
its efforts to reach new markets and focus on the value of the
works and artists have clearly been decisive in regard to its
success. The quality of the art on show has also been of vital
importance to the development of opportunities for exchange at the
fair.
ARTURO FERNÁNDEZ ÁLVAREZ PRESIDENTE DE LA CÁMARA DE COMERCIO,
INDUSTRIA Y SERVICIOS DE MADRID PRESIDENT OF THE MADRID CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE, INDUSTRY AND SERVICES
Yet again this year, Fundación Montemadrid wishes to congratulate
the entire ARCOmadrid organisation for its invaluable work. This
contemporary art fair has established itself as a benchmark event
in the art world in our country.
On this edition, we would particularly like to express our support
for ARCOmadrid as it celebrates its 35th Anniversary with a review
of the art of recent years through the galleries that have
contributed to its history, thus reinforcing the exceptional nature
of the project and underlining the importance of this fair on the
international art scene.
Since its inauguration in February 1982, ARCOmadrid has brought
together the best art available through a careful selection of
participating galleries as well as different professionals from the
sector. From the most historic avant-garde to the youngest and most
modern, as well as nat ional and international art. Furthermore, it
has been characterised as driving the art market in Spain as well
as private, institutional and corporate collecting. Through its
numerous programmes and initiatives, this fair also proves that it
goes beyond its commercial function by offering opportunities for
the development of the arts sector, while generating different
international work and collaborative networks between artists,
curators, gallery directors, collectors and institutions.
Coinciding with this commemorative edition, for the first time in
Spain, La Casa Encendida presents an exhibition by the North
American artists, Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin, based on a
single piece from the Zabludowicz Collection (London). The show,
which takes the name Priority Innfield, is made up of five enormous
video-based pieces and mise-en-scènes that analyse
contemporary society’s extreme languages and behaviours.
Furthermore, as in previous years to coincide with this event, we
present the sixteenth edition of the Generaciones competition,
a programme of note in reference to contemporary Spanish art for
the promotion of our country’s youngest creators. An exhibition
comprising ten works handpicked by a jury made up by Oscar Alonso
Molina (critic and curator), Manuel Segade (Director of CA2M) and
Ellen Blumenstein (Curator at KW Institute for Contemporary
Art, Berlin), which we hope the guest gallery directors and
collectors, invited by ARCOmadrid, will once again find both
attractive and interesting.
JOSÉ GUIRAO DIRECTOR GENERAL DE LA FUNDACIÓN MONTEMADRID GENERAL
DIRECTOR OF FUNDACIÓN MONTEMADRID
CA2M) y Ellen Blumenstein (Comisaria en KW Institute for
