ABOUT MANATI Manati was created in 1995 by
Silvia Negreiros (designer) and Bia Hetzel (writer and pho-
tographer) with the main objective of publishing works of
literary, informative and graphic quality. The publisher’s
catalog includes children’s literature, poetry, biographies
and photo essays, such as the book Baía de Guanabara
(Guanabara Bay), today considered an important refer-
ence book on the city of Rio de Janeiro. An attractive fea-
ture of the children’s books is the value given to the sensi-
bility and intelligence of the reader, and these have estab-
lished the publisher’s name in the national and interna-
tional markets. The care with which they combine good
writing with elaborately crafted graphics is responsible
for the awards received from institutions such as the
Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (FNLIJ), the
Câmara Brasileira do Livro (CBL), the Academia Brasileira
de Letras (ABL), the União Brasileira de Escritores (UBE)
and the Munich International Library.
We are working towards distributing our books through all the main book shops inthe country. If however you have difficulty in finding any of the books, contact usby telephone, fax or email. We guarantee to deliver your order via the Post Officeor through a nearby distributor.
We also take orders from schools, companies and institutions that are interested in making special purchases. Furthermore, specialists in children’s literature have suggested literary workshopsfor some of our books, which can be found on our website.

ABC: CURUMIM CAN READ ALREADY!Faithful to its objective of stimulating and fixing the
process of literacy, this ABC brings us many words that are
already part of a child’s universe, and also many new words,
which will enrich the vocabulary of young readers. Careful
choice of words results in a balance between the simpler
words and those of medium and greater difficulty. The
graphic design motivates interest and awakens the chil-
dren’s curiosity, while the highly colored illustrations have a
fun appeal, enchanting the young readers.
Themes: Literacy, illustration, Brazilian culture
C H I L D R E N ‘ S B O O K SBERIMBAU IS CALLING YOU! This richly illus-
trated album, perfect for stimulating a child’s curiosity and
desire to read during the early learning stage, uses various
verses of “Capoeira” chants, and towards the end describes
the origins and growth of this Afro-Brazilian art of combat.
The colors, the energy and the magic sound of the “berim-
baus” can be felt in the rhythm of the poetry and Mariana
Massarani’s illustrations. The result is a cheerful book, with
the irresistible fascination of the Capoeira dance/combat.
Come and play friend! Berimbau is calling you!

C H I L D R E N ‘ S B O O K STHE BOY, THE DOG This unusual and captivating
story by Simone Bibian, accompanied by ultra-creative illus-
trations by Mariana Massarani, touches on one of children’s
deepest feelings – the desire for a pet. The story captivates
and enchants mainly starters, who have fun with the dog
and the author’s way of inverting the perspective half way
through the book, e.g. just when the story is ending, it
starts again, but now told from the point of view of a
puppy, whose greatest dream is to have a “pet boy”.

KIDS JUST LOVE What brings us together, if not
our affinities? What are the universal values of childhood?
This was the question Bia Hetzel asked herself when creat-
ing the text and stimulating the imagination of Mariana
Massarani. In remembering that “kids just love” universal
pleasures, the authors created more than just a book, they
created an extraordinary set of values able to arouse sym-
pathy, cooperation and confidence between very different
people. On perceiving affinities, the child realizes it is part
of the same humanity and opens its heart to the world. On
enjoying this passionate book, readers of all ages will find
that peace and harmony amongst men is possible, because
these things really exist in their hearts.

A MAN OF TRUTH Playing with proverbs and pop-

of the reader, the author transforms abstract and philo-
sophical concepts such as Truth, Lies and Doubts into attrac-

with its main character, will grow with the reader. Mariana
Massarani’s illustrations create instantaneous empathy and
increase the element of surprise, adding inventiveness to

C H I L D R E N ‘ S B O O K SYOUNG PEDRO THE NAVIGATOR Passion
for the sea. Fascination for the unknown. The pleasure of a
conquest. These are the elements chosen by Lúcia Fidalgo
to give new life to Pedro Álvares Cabral, transforming the
historic navigator Pedro into a dreamy lad. Delving into the
imagination of the 16th century and sailing through sym-
bols and unforgettable sagas, author and illustrator man-
aged to illuminate with poetry one of the best known his-
torical figures – though remote from many modern
Brazilian children. The book, with an endorsement from
the National Historical Museum for its loyalty to the most
accepted theory for the “discovery” of Brazil, makes a sen-
sible and intelligent re-evaluation of historical facts and the
colonization.

the Ilha Grande Bay, and becomes its friend. Apart from
information on ecology, the story deals with the imminent
disappearance of a traditional Brazilian culture which,
through the centuries, learned to live in harmony with
nature. The poetic narrative, illustrated with photos by the
author and colored illustrations by Graça Lima, captivates
the reader, invoking reflection of the type of “progress” we
want to achieve. At the end of the book, the history of the
occupation of Ilha Grande Bay, its principal ecosystems and
all that science has discovered regarding the killer whale is
described clearly and comprehensively.

INSANE INSECTS What are our biggest
problems? The Insane Insects Collection, made
up of small books that fit in the palm of your
hand, handles these questions with a very spe-
cial humor. Each book contains a fable about
the typical neuroses and attitudes of people
today, and the stories, ruled by a logic not always pre-
dictable, bring laughs and surprises. Lola the dragonfly is
futile, frivolous and voluble. The mosquito Percival has an
explanation for everything. The snake and the cricket hate
each other, but as there is the day of the hunt, there is also
the day of the hunter. Teresa, the tarantula, is not an insect,
but an arachnid, but has a bite capable of provoking deliri-
ous dances and songs. Hmmm... does this remind you of
anyone?

HAPPY AND CONTENTED Bia spends the day
with her cats Honey and Goody. Sometimes, as in every-
thing, the honey is not so sweet and things happen to cause
pain. But mistress and cats understand each other and they
all have fun, because every day Bia comes home with nov-
elties in her bag. Out come fluffy balls and rhymes, games
and repetitions, and in the ball of wool that jumps and rolls
there are no letters or sounds to confuse the child who has
just learned to read. Reading is easy and natural, following
the words and pictures, simple, happy, expressive. (Amélia

breeds violence. Violence breeds violence. We all know
where that ends. Few manage to avoid starting something.
Where does nastiness come from? how to avoid being bad
tempered? In this delicious book, Bia Hetzel gives us an
infallible recipe to use against belligerence – good humor
and the ability to laugh at oneself. With short phrases,
interspersed with laughs and rhymes, the text addresses the
serious question of bad humor that attacks the narrator
and torments her life. The superbly colored illustrations by

STORIES IN THE WIND With rhymes, music,
poetry and a profound knowledge of oral tradition and
children’s folklore, the author recreates the imagination
with circle games, songs and dances. A delicious discussion.
A fun word game in which the spinning wind, alchemist of
energy, brings gasps and laughs from the children. A breath
of fantasy and festivity in the life of the reader. An antidote
for the worries of modern life. A light and serene breeze to
make adults and children join hands in the dance of life and

a river (representing respectively the subject, space and
time) are the main elements of this unusual story, which
captivates readers of all ages. Graça Lima’s illustrations, in

THERE’S THE THING The text, light and funny,
tells the story of a smart monkey that is suspicious of the
latest crazy law created by the king of the jungle: “Large

fable, gets involved in a plot full of suspense and humor, in
which serious questions are discussed such as justice, ethics,
solidarity and mutual respect. However, as the best part of
a story is always the end, Dalila and friends discover the sur-

ROSALINA Bia Hetzel’s debut as an author of stories
for children, this book narrates the adventures of a hump-
back whale (currently on the endangered species list), in
Brazilian waters. According to Margareth Mattos, in a
report prepared for FNLIJ, “from the fictional text emerges
important information about the species to which Rosalina
belongs – how she lives, how she breeds, how she feeds –
the risks she runs due to the predatory actions of man, and
how this action can be reversed. However, this does not
make the text boring or excessively didactic – quite to the
contrary. The value of the book resides precisely in the fact
that the information is transmitted in an amusing and
attractive manner, awakening readers’ interest.”

THE CRYSTAL CABINET Few people still practice
the art of invisible mending. To make such a mend in a
piece of cloth each thread must be separated, so the repair
can be done with the threads of the cloth itself, leaving an
invisible line. With penetrating vision and rare delicacy, the
author describes in words one of the most disastrous splits
in the life of a family – that which leads to separation, loss-
es and painful choices. Accompanying the invisible thread
of this mesh, here and there illuminated by the illustrations
of Roger Mello, the reader is suddenly involved in a story so
private that it ends up becoming collective. At the end of
the book, it feels as if something important that had been
torn apart is mended invisibly within the reader.

HOPSCOTCH Letícia, in Latin, means happiness, and
Lúcia means light. The “dead” language pulsates, like an
invisible living thread, in the subconscious of Latin writers
and readers. Not by chance, the two main characters in this
story are called “happiness” and “light”: Leticia is an
orphan girl; Lucia the stepmother who tries to gain a place
in the child’s heart. The rest is enchantment. The book itself
is already good, but when the reader realizes that it forms
a trilogy with two previous works by Graziela Bozano
Hetzel, The Crystal Cabinet and The Pearl Necklace, an end-
ing is created in the tradition of all good literature, sealing
a pact of sensibility between the writer and the reader.

THE PEARL NECKLACE Winner of many awards
and known for her delicate handling of difficult themes,
the author presents the drama of dependence from the
viewpoint of a child. For little Alice, the pearls in her moth-
er’s necklace are as salt as tears and sea water. As the read-
er gets into the book, the salt water tide begins to rise and
starts to invade his world. First, he feels a grain of sand
making his eyes water. Then the constant pain of the grain
scratches the skin of his soul. What hurts Alice most is her
mother’s alcoholism. The girl sometimes shuts herself in a
seashell. Society sometimes prefers to shut the pain out, but
lulled by the author’s quiet words, we feel the tide recede
taking with it the waters of suffering.

LUDI Can you imagine Dom Pedro I, as a child, playing
football with a little girl? Or a cell phone ringing in the
streets of Rio, back in the 19th century? And what about a
“Carioca revolution” led by a group of kids? In this adven-

Chocolate Moustaches and her family, the Mansos, go back
in time to observe the Portuguese Royal Family disembark-

CATARINETA Catarineta is the most celebrated, the
most beautiful, the most mythical of all the sea romances in
Portuguese poetry. An anonymous ballad, dating from the
second half of the 16th century, it represents the highest
level of esthetics, lyrics, wisdom and dramatic economy to
which popular poetry can aspire in its greatest moments.
Long research into the countless variations of the poem led
Roger Mello to the excellent dramatic version in this album.
Similar work of re-interpretation of various examples of our
popular art served as inspiration for his illustrations, which
make this book a feast for eyes and soul, a celebration for
those of any age who are interested in our deepest and
most authentic roots. (Alexei Bueno)

There’s a joker in the audience – or so people think. But
now the whistle comes from the aisle, and all attention is
focused there. Curupira is like that – a whistle here, a whis-
tle there and when you think you see it it’s gone again. It is
half animal, half human, half phantom. If there can be
three halves!... In the end, the theater fooled us all and
Curupira is more alive and clever than ever. Spectator/read-
er/actor – take care. The pixie is hidden where no one can
find him. Anyone hear a whistle?

GARDENS To write poetry is to arrange words so as to
transmit an inexpressible sentiment... The best poetry
awakens this sentiment as if it were music or images. Its
words are so precise and necessary that they disappear, like
the notes of music or the curves of an image, at the
moment the inexpressible appears. Creating a garden
means arranging elements of nature in order to produce a
complete emotion, indecipherable. In the most beautiful
garden, the inexpressible germinates as if nature were
poetry; the forms, the colors and sparkle are so precise and
necessary that they disappear the moment man enters and
experiences an undecipherable emotion. This book con-
tains the most wonderful poetry and the most beautiful
gardens, just waiting for the reader to enter them with the
most innocent sensitivity.

ESSENTIAL POETRY The poetry in this book is
essential because it endeavors to represent the essence of a
work of art. It is essential also because it carries poetic sen-
timents born from true perception of the essence of life
and of the universe. It is essential, above all, because it
appears in a simple and penetrating language-emotion,
like a spring that rises in the writer and flows to the reader.
An anthology or rare works, out of print or unpublished,
which portray the maturity of a poet already acclaimed by
the public and by the critics.

THE PARTNERSHIP Camila and Leonardo are
friends, authors and partners, and decided to write a four
handed children’s story. They write alternative chapters,
and as they don’t live in the same state and can’t depend
on the internet, they mail them along with letters about
themselves and about literature. The Partnership reveals
however, three universes that inter-relate: a story for chil-
dren, the life of the two authors and their opinions on lit-
erature. A book in which each chapter surprises the reader,
in a succession of surgical cuts in a vein of literature.

BEFORE THE AFTER What can I tell the reader
about Before the After? Or say about the author who has
received so many honors, so many awards and praise? How
can I describe a prose that is so poetic as to touch the heart
of the reader? What words should I use to describe com-
plex, profound but at the same time genuinely simple char-
acters. How to depict the strength of the images, when the
words are written with such delicacy? How to measure the
humor and emphasize its charm. How to transmit the
importance of this book, redeeming a piece of our history,
witness to one time in one point of our country, and if it is
pure history or a tremendous tale of fiction. Only by read-
ing, only by reading.... Difficult to describe an adjustment
so perfect between the fantastic in literature and the talent
of an author. (Hebe Coimbra)

POSSIBLE LOVE José Saramago — the Portuguese
writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and has mil-
lions of reader fans,– is above all a humanist, a solid, whole-
some man, more active than most, a citizen of the world,
coherent and lucid at over 80 years of age. In this conversa-
tion with journalist and writer Juan Arias, permeated with
the silence of poet Roseana Murray and lulled by the waves
and emptiness surrounding Lanzarote, one of the Canary
Islands, José receives the journalist in the intimacy of his
house, with the care of one preparing for a love tryst. A
love that he transmits little by little and which will be
understood as possible by any who refuse to give up on
humanity.

A TASTE OF WILD GLEE: THE LIFE OFALBERTO SANTOS-DUMONT In this biogra-
phical novel written for the young, the author narrates the
life of “The Father of Aviation” in the form of an adven-
ture, with the experiments that led humanity to one of the
greatest technological advances of the 20th century – the
conquest of space. The book contains information on the
life of Santos-Dumont and on the initial steps in aerial nav-
igation, as well as picturesque little known details that help
to create a profile of the person and the atmosphere of the
era. In the same spirit of bringing the past of the visionary
inventor to the present, illustrator Graça Lima and designer
Silvia Negreiros revitalize old pictures with lines and strong
colors. The result is a book that is born looking like a classic.

VELHA GUARDA DA PORTELA Biographical
essay of the band that symbolizes the tradition and quality
of Brazilian samba. The authors, who have followed the
Portela Samba School for decades, have portrayed Velha
Guarda with the same poetry, levity and rhythm that char-
acterize their music. The chapters, organized and illustrated
with opulence worthy of a Carnival Parade, contain a study
of the origins of samba in the Rio de Janeiro suburbs; the
profile of Paulo da Portela (founder and leader of the
samba school); places frequented by the samba dancers; the
group’s rising popularity through its concerts; and the
biographies of the members of the group. The book ends
with musical scores for 16 sambas, and the complete discog-
raphy of the group. All enriched with statements by famous
personalities in Brazilian music, priceless photos from the
archives and illustrations by Lan. JOÃO BAPTISTA M. VARGENS CARLOS MONTE

MESTRE BIMBA Mestre Bimba,
with his mastery of movement, became a
legend in the Capoeira universe and Bahian culture. Known
among Capoeira groups all over the world as one of the
most important figures in the history of this type of martial
art, Bimba is here portrayed in body and soul by Muniz
Sodré, his friend and disciple, and also a master in the study
of signs, writer and thinker revered in many countries.
According to the author, “Mestre Bimba and his Capoeira
were together an expression of objective irony of the
African-Brazilian in Bahia, of the African in Brazil”. The
Capoeira proponent, the anthropologist and the semioti-
cian will finally understand the legend of Bimba. However
this collection is written for readers in general, who will
enjoy the play of words on the play of the body.

GLAUBER ROCHA From the Bahia
scrubland to the wide world, Glauber
Rocha became established as a great movie maker and one
of the most powerful personalities in Brazilian culture.
Author of world cinema classics, such as Deus e o Diabo na
Terra do Sol, Terra em transe and O Dragão da Maldade
contra o Santo Guerreiro, he helped to create a new,
broader vision of Brazilian nationality, and infected a
whole period of Brazilian life with his indignation, his
relentless search for utopia. In this book, poet Alexei Bueno
traces a cine-biography – or bio-cinematography of the
career of the creator of the Cinema Novo. Analyzing each
film and the central moments of his life, the reader will dis-
cover a fascinating screenplay of the Glauberian dream,
which is the dream of all who aspire to a great art and a
great nation.

CUíCA DE SANTO AMAROFew characters in the steamy street scene
of Salvador in the 20th century became as immortalized in
the collective Bahian memory as the fabulous “cordelista”,
street singer and declaimer revisited in this book.
Characterized by writers, film makers, poets and play-
wrights, the outrageous soothsayer of the Lacerda Elevator
comes from a long dynasty of Bahian satirical, obscene and
devilish verve, with illustrious predecessors such as Gregó-
rio de Mattos and Francisco Moniz Barreto. Living chroni-
cler of his state, berating bad politicians, and even good
ones, irreverent revealer of society scandals and infamy,
Cuíca de Santo Amaro is one of the indestructible Bahian
myths, who we meet here whole in body and soul.

GREGORIO DE MATTOSBiographical data on the Portuguese
baroque poet known as “Boca do Inferno” (Mouth of Hell)
are virtually inexistent, and for this reason no one is more
capable of gathering and interpreting them than Fernando
da Rocha Peres, long time researcher of documents relating
to the most extraordinary satirical poet in Brazilian litera-
ture, although equally great in all the genres of poetry of
his era, from lyrical to satirical, from religious to frankly
obscene. Gregório de Mattos traces a detailed profile of life
in Brazil and in Portugal in the 17th century, including an
authentic background of documented data on the life and
works of this brilliant and indomitable Bahian poet.

PREHISTORY OF BRAZIL A work of the highest
graphic and informative quality, illustrated with a surpris-
ing sequence of photos of rock art from the most important
archeological sites in the country. Based on extensive
research – under the scientific coordination of Madu
Gaspar, with advice from specialists in the areas of archeol-
ogy, paleontology, and ecological anthropology – the book
describes, in simple and accessible language, the more
interesting aspects of Brazilian prehistory. From the forma-
tion of the land mass, passing through the various forms of
life that developed here over millions of years, to the con-
troversial arrival of man to South America, and the situa-
tion of the native people at the time of the “European dis-

GUANABARA BAY With a captivating text and
around 150 colored photos, Guanabara Bay is presented as
a live organism, complex and delicate. A fundamental work
of reference, a delicious history book, the biography of a
paradise. “A historical, geological, oceanographic, linguistic
and biological study of the bay, enriched by perhaps the
most sensational sequence of photos ever brought togeth-
er on the subject. Under the awe inspiring beauty of the
pictures, the text hammers the errors, aggressions and
crimes that man has committed over the years against one
of the most fabulous natural landscapes in the world.”
