Literatureand Juvenile
Reading is traveling to other universes, other time periods, breaking the barriers of time and space. Reading is getting to know other worlds – but especially getting to know better oneself, a world so vast and full of surprises. To read is to be free.
The emotions and experiences which books may offer are limitless. Literature throws open doors and windows to a fascinating mix of wisdom, curiosity and knowledge, supplying the reader with different ways to approach the world and preparing him/her to deal with diversity.
With its transformative power, literature presents a multitude of stories in an assortment of genres, and its role is paramount in the development of children’s imaginations.
Through books which are read from an early age, children start to recognize their own emotions, and the narratives’ multiple interpretations help them deal with reality.
Rovelle publishes books for children and young readers since 2008. This work starts from simple and brilliant ideas but demands much care and attention. We believe in the power of books and magic literature, this is why sensibility, dedication, care, and commitment in making the world a better place fuel our productive process.
Transforming the world through literature and art is our mission.
Carolina Braga and Cristiane Pacanowski Editors
The KiteText and illustrations: Roger Mello
A beautiful narrative about childhood. A child
dreams of flying a kite. It’s a lovely and clear day.
Similar in structure to the popular tales of oral
or written tradition, the pictures in this book tell
a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end,
where the character has to go through some
challenges until once again reaching the same
balance from the beginning, or not.
Don’t be spooked, there’s a sequence sugges-
ting a war scene, prompting the idea “it must be
what it looks like”. But it is only imagination. It
represents the crossing/cutting of kites, a facet
particular to this recreational activity. Those who
have tried it know what it is about.
Let the kite of your imagination fly and have fun.

2014
Roger Mello
Originally from Brasília, Mello graduated in Design from State of Rio de Janeiro University (UERJ). An illustrator and author of
juvenile books, he started his career also working in animation with the Canadian National Film Board team.
He became a prestigious author of beautiful picture books, which tell the stories only through his illustrations. He has illustrated
dozens of books for famous Brazilian authors, such as Guimarães Rosa, Graciliano Ramos, Ana Maria Machado and Jorge Amado.
His work has received several awards: Malba Tahan, Luís Jardim, Ofélia Fontes, and fifteen times the Highly Recommended
seal, all of these granted by the National Children and Youth Book Foundation (FNLIJ). He also received The White Ravens, from
The International Youth Library, in Munich, Germany, twice.
In 2014, Mello was the first illustrator in Latin America to be granted the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which is the
equivalent of the Nobel Prize of juvenile literature, for his lasting contribution. With the HCA, he has established himself side
by side with Lygia Bojunga and Ana Maria Machado, Brazilian writers who received the award in 1982 and 2000, respectively.
The jury said that Mello’s work “explores the history and culture of Brazil without underestimating the child’s ability to
recognize and comprehend cultural phenomenon and images, allowing them to be guided by their imagination. Through his
colorful stories, the young reader gains a deeper understanding of their own culture and those around the world”.
The End of the LineText and illustrations: Marcelo Pimentel
A story without text, full of magic and expression,
narrated through the author’s unique strokes. A
line of animals from the Brazilian fauna awaits
the enchanted moment when they will receive
their “brazilianess”.
And who is responsible for such a feat? Saci?
Cuca? Caipora? See, read and find out through the
beautiful images in this story how the animals in
our fauna got their Brazilian “look”.

Paper HouseText: Luiz Raul Machado
Illustrations: Mariana Massarani
You may think that a paper house is something
frail — made out of cardboard and crêpe paper
or perhaps a more creative combination like
newspaper and cellophane —, incapable of
lasting through the years and exposed to the
whims of time. It may be blown down in a
second or turn to ashes if thrown into a fire. Is
that so? Oh, don’t be fooled!
A paper house is made out of pure sentiment, from
the warmest memories of childhood, from the
desire to live in that cozy little corner among words,
the freedom to give wings to one’s imagination.
Here’s your key. Come in, make yourself
comfortable. This house is yours.

An Idea in the PocketText: Patricia de Arias
Illustrations: Elisabeth Teixeira
How many ideas fit in the day of a tiny boy who
plays tirelessly?
And what if these ideas are born in a world
of dreams, inhabited by faeries, gnomes, and
pirates, a magical world in which the moon and
the stars whisper beautiful songs by the window?
Richly illustrated, An idea in the pocket gives
imagination a free rein in a charming game of
“telling but not telling”, urging the reader to join
in the fun.

Take MeText: Patricia de Arias
Illustrations: Chris Eich
Some say that babies are brought by storks.
Others say some children are born from the
heart. The truth is that all of them come from
love, the deep affection which holds refuge and
acceptance.
And love is the main character of Take Me, a
delicate book filled with sensibility, inviting
us to plunge into a child’s feelings. Values like
separation, absence, company, affection, longing,
are all present and evoke other emotions.
It makes us think there are no words to explain
everything to children, but care and refuge remain.
Take me is a plea to come closer, an embrace, a
voice that echoes in each one of us…

MandolinText: Leny Werneck
Illustrations: Guto Lins
Cláudio grew up hearing his father play the
bassoon, rehearsing at home the songs of the
great festivals. Music was always present in his life,
and the sounds of the world colored his family’s everyday living. This was so with birds, the songs
his mother chanted, the train’s pounding noise,
and even the sounds of rain and wind.
With a delicate and charming narrative combined
with beautiful illustrations, Mandolin shows how
the love of music may be passed down through the
generations, revealing similarities and differences,
and above all enhancing the ties of affection.

– Hum, hum!– Então, posso trazer o instrumento?
Leny WerneckWerneck grew up in a discreetly musical family. Her mother
played the piano and everyone at the farm listened to
famous Verdi arias in records brought from Europe by her
aunt. Besides the music, there was the silence and sounds
of the woods in starry nights. She loved the mystery of
those moments.
She discovered the chords very early, for the pleasure
and the variety of shapes and sounds the instruments
are capable of producing. Among them, she loves the
mandolin. Werneck believes it travels in time, covering
incredible distances, meeting unforgettable composers
and singers throughout the world.
For the mandolin she created a story and a boy, Cláudio.
And with them the gift that the author shares with the
readers: the infinite pleasure of music!
Guto Lins
A design professor at PUC-Rio, Lins encourages his students
to play several instruments and follow the music.
He patters on the table searching for the right rhythm for
the duet between text and image.
He listens to everything while working, to which he plays
air instruments in chromatic dodecaphonic scale. Lins
harmonizes and makes visual arrangements for his own
books.

by the Abacaxis river, in the heart of the Amazon
forest. His father hunted and fished, and his mother
occupied herself with house and field work. The
boy did all the typical activities for a child of the
maraguá people: shooting arrows, swimming and
canoeing.
Tykuã, however, was special, he was born with
the gift of divination.
His fame as a diviner soon spread through the
village, and the boy liked to use his gift to help
those around him. Gradually, his kindness and
fame triggered the jealousy and hate of Anhãga,
an evil medicine man, who, with his two
disciples, will do everything he can to destroy
Tykuã. Will good conquer evil?

The rock at the square and other stories by Leo TolstoyText: Leo Tolstoy
Illustrations: Gonzalo Cárcamo
Adaptation: Ana Sofia Mariz and Tatiana Mariz
Russian culture as revealed by classic writers such
as Leo Tolstoy is strongly rooted in the experience
of the common man. In this collection of stories,
the celebrated author gathered narratives from
the rural environment in Russia addressing with
humor and sarcasm universal human issues.
The character of the peasant, recurrent in the
text, surprises and amuses us with their peculiar
wisdom. In a compelling way, unexpected
situations reference concepts such as wealth,
honesty, justice, intelligence and power.

Tolstoy reached fame and recognition with romances such

Biel barely knew his son, who grew up with an

a world made out of ocean and loneliness. Like
father, like son, and their nostalgia for what they
never had.
That hope carries Tuna as he travels to meet Biel,
