FALL 2011 Breaking New Ground—The First Summit! By Koty Allen With everything from regionals to nationals and state fairs to jackpot shows, this past summer has been full of excitement for AJSA members. It certain- ly was a fun summer for me, but I would have to say that the most fun I had was at the first American Junior Simmental leadership conference, The Summit. The three-day conference, held a week after the Na- tional Classic in Kansas City, was a great time to gather with fellow AJSA members without cattle for a change. We heard excellent speakers, enjoyed ice-breaker games, toured the American Hereford Association head- quarters, and traveled to Sanders Ranch plus Shoal Creek Land and Cattle for memorable ranch tours. Throughout the conference we had the opportunity to interact with numerous guest speakers. Nationally renowned keynote speaker, Andrew McCrea, demonstrated dif- ferent ways to develop our leadership skills and make our mark in whatever path we may choose. Industry-leading livestock marketing representatives spoke as a pan- el on the opportunities for future agricultural endeavors in the cattle industry. Marty Ropp and Dr. Bob Weaber captivated us as they discussed a range of current cat- tle industry topics and trends. Lots of laughs were to be had as Holli Hatmaker’s “Captain’s Ship Game” had all of us rolling on the ground and barking like walruses. Although we were attending a leadership conference, we did not forget what brought us all together-- Simmental cattle. While visiting the green pastures of Shoal Creek Land and Cattle, we caught a glimpse of their elite donor cows and a few of their new and upcoming Red Angus genetics. At the Sanders Ranch we had the chance to view their sale cattle and their 90% junior bred donor herd. We certainly didn’t forget to have fun during the conference. There was a pool party one evening, we went to a Kansas City Royals game and witnessed one of their winning games the next, and we rounded out the conference by dancing the night away in the Sander’s sale barn. The first Summit was an incredible three days, full of making lifelong friends, hearing about interesting opportunities in the industry and looking at exquisite genetics. We hope to see more of the AJSA members at our next Summit Conference in 2013. FALL 2011

Breaking New Ground—The First Summit!By Koty Allen

With everything from regionals to nationals and state fairs to jackpot shows, this past summer has been full of excitement for AJSA members. It certain-ly was a fun summer for me, but I would have to say that the most fun I had was at the first American Junior Simmental leadership conference, The Summit.

The three-day conference, held a week after the Na-tional Classic in Kansas City, was a great time to gather with fellow AJSA members without cattle for a change. We heard excellent speakers, enjoyed ice-breaker games, toured the American Hereford Association head-quarters, and traveled to Sanders Ranch plus Shoal Creek Land and Cattle for memorable ranch tours.

Throughout the conference we had the opportunity to interact with numerous guest speakers. Nationally renowned keynote speaker, Andrew McCrea, demonstrated dif-ferent ways to develop our leadership skills and make our mark in whatever path we may choose. Industry-leading livestock marketing representatives spoke as a pan-el on the opportunities for future agricultural endeavors in the cattle industry. Marty Ropp and Dr. Bob Weaber captivated us as they discussed a range of current cat-tle industry topics and trends.

Denver in January--- it’s the home of the Super Bowl of all cattle shows, and the place to attend The One Sale, the prestigious Sim-mental sale, where the mile high magic fills the air along with hands of bidders reaching for the top genetics in the industry. This year there is certainly something to raise your hand and bid on, not only to support the American Simmental Foundation, but also to get your chance at the rights to flush a top donor in the Simmental breed. Drew and Holli Hatmaker, owners of HTP Simmentals, have gener-ously donated the opportunity for a flush on their lead donor, DMN Daisy Mae. She is a 5/8 Percentage Female, completely free of any Dream On. What a great chance to outcross genetics on a percent-age female you can flush to the bull of your choice! Can’t decide what bull you would use? Not to worry, if you would rather, you can choose the rights to flush DMN Daisy Mae to two bulls of your choice and keep half of each flush. No matter what type of operation you run, you can mate this female to fit your needs. Having been named Champion Percentage Female at the Ameri-can Royal Junior Show, as well as placing in the top 20 at the Junior Nationals, DMN Daisy Mae has proven herself as a functional female. All proceeds from the sale of this flush will go to the Foundation to use for support of the Simmental junior programs. The Hatmakers are no newcomers to the AJSA. Holli is a former AJSA trustee, as well as a former Silver and Gold Merit recipient. Holli and her husband Drew are avid supporters of AJSA members and can always be found at junior events help-ing wherever they’re needed. “We are very excited and humbled at the chance to do-nate genetics from our herd to benefit the Foundation and the AJSA youth,” said Holli.

The Foundation Board of Directors along with the AJSA Board of Trustees want to extend their deepest thanks to HTP Simmentals for their generous donation in support of Simmen-tal youth programs. Be sure to mark your calendars for this year’s sale, January 16, 2012!

AJSA Junior Spotlight: Kiersten Jass

By Kyle Ruth

Kiersten Jass is the 13-year-old daughter of Mark and Beth Jass of Garner, Iowa. She is currently an eighth grader at Garner-Hayfield Middle School. Kiersten has had a very successful junior show career at both AJSA regional and national classics and other na-tionally competitive shows.

Kiersten’s first AJSA National Classic was in 2009, hosted in Columbus, Indiana, where she led her heifer JS Untouchable to 3rd Overall Percentage Simmental Heifer hon-ors. On top of that, her heifer was bred and raised on her farm and placed Kiersten in the top 20 overall junior showmen.

“My favorite AJSA con-test is showmanship,” says Kiersten, “it allows me to practice exhibit-ing my heifer and lets me feel more confident in my abilities come show day.” To prepare for showmanship and other AJSA contests, Kiersten focuses on daily care with her show heifers, studies for the cattleman’s quiz, and recites her heifer’s pedigree to groom her sales talk pitch.

“My mentor growing up in the cattle busi-ness would have to be my older sister, Court-ney,” said Kiersten. Courtney Jass currently serves as a North Central Regional Trustee for the AJSA Board. Although only 13, Ki-ersten is already making plans for the future and aims to attend Iowa State University.

Long drives and unpredictable weather didn’t keep record numbers of juniors from attending the National Classic XXXI in Sedalia, Missouri. Throughout the week of July 3-8, 325 members of the AJSA exhibited 441 head of cattle and competed in all the traditional contests at the Missouri State Fairgrounds.

After extended check-in times for the hundreds of Simmental and Sim-Influence cattle from across the nation, state associations paraded their flags around the Matthewson Exhibition Center during the opening cer-emony. On the first day the mentoring program got underway as new National Classic exhibitors partnered with veterans to learn more about each other and the junior program.

Contests throughout the week proved to be as challenging as ever. The Skill-A-Thon tested competitors in areas such as feedstuffs, diseases, and the beef industry. As juniors pulled topics for Public Speaking they discovered a wide array of new industry-related topics. Sales Talk judges looked for everything from purebred show cattle to feedlot brood cows. Despite the heat in the Coliseum contestants judged all types of cattle, considered scenarios and pedigrees, and gave reasons on selected classes. The Cattlemen’s Quiz covered everything from fun-damentals of the Simmental breed to current events in the agriculture world.

Showmanship had numerous competitive classes, with Chase Groves, Darrin Barbour and Jack Ward judging. Steers, Cow/Calf pairs and Percentage showed on July 6, and as the final show day of Simbrah, Fullbloods and Purebred owned cattle came around, so did the rain. Regardless, cattle worked their way to the Matthewson for judge Brad McCurry of Kansas to evaluate what were undoubtedly the best cattle ever at a National Classic.

Other events and activities throughout the week produced additional competition and good times. Corn hole, a pool party, a scavenger hunt and a movie night were spread throughout the week. In traditional National Classic fashion, all meals were provided, along with a pizza dinner and cookout bar-b-que. The Fourth of July was celebrated with Sure Champ T-Shirt day, sponsored by VitaFerm, and the juniors spent the evening watching a fireworks display decked out in their Live It, Love It, Lead It shirts.

National XXXI in Sedalia was a week of stiff competition and great times overall. The week concluded with the awards banquet and Pin-nacle Sale at State Fair Community College. As the record-breaking numbers of AJSA members would agree, the 2011 Showtime Classic was a summer highlight and a huge success.
