It seems a very long time since writing in the Parish Bulletin and

it is. So much has happened since the last issue. It has been a very

hard few weeks in the life of this little community as it comes to

terms with the tragedy in the death of the two young men Aaron

Davidson and Neil McFerran and their grieving family, and young Matthew whose

life can never truly be the same again. Please continue to pray for these families in

their deep loss and their journey into the days ahead.

No one knows what tomorrow brings and life is so precious yet we can easily waste

it. Resting and relaxing is not wasting time it is part of God’s intention. However

we do waste time on pursuits we know don't give meaning and hope. It is easy to

forget how blessed we are in that we have been given our very breath. It is also

common for us to go on without saying thank you God.

We move into the next season of church life and I pray that we will be able to lean

on God more that we will see Him at work in the little details of our life and Parish.

This edition of the Magazine includes much information about things starting back

up and the busy life of our Parish and community kicking into gear again. Please

don't work in your own strength, but allow God to strengthen you as he is with you

in the journey.

None of us know about tomorrow but God does so we trust Him. Thank you for

your love, support and presence and be encouraged as we go into to a new chapter

with new challenges and new blessings in Parish Life.

With love and prayers

Diane

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF THE

MOTHER’S UNION IN THE PARISH.

The Mother’s Union are 80 years in the Parish this year,

and in view of this we are hosting a special service of

celebration in Christchurch on Sunday 26th September

at 3pm to which you are all invited. This is a service for

all, not just the Mother’s Union, and it is a wonderful

opportunity to learn a little bit more about this fantastic

organisation and especially its life here in the Parish.

Refreshments will be served after the Service and more

details will appear nearer the time.

Please continue to pray for the Mother’s Union as an

organisation as it ministers in many different parts of the

world, and pray for our own Mother’s Union in all their

work and ministry here in the parish and community.

5

Events such as the Summer Fayre

don’t just happen. It takes so much

hard work and planning which on

this occasion began right back in the

winter months, with a very hard

working and imaginative committee.

I am first of all very grateful to those folk who attended

meetings and took care of various aspects of the Fayre.

Work was shared out and others came on board and, during

the process, we laughed a lot and shared many cups of tea

and coffee!

I am deeply grateful to the many

volunteers who worked hard yet

enjoyed it too. There are simply

too many people who helped to

begin naming names, so I want to

congratulate all of you for the amazing sense of

achievement. Yes we were exhausted, but it was just great.

Well done to everyone.

I was completely overwhelmed by the good weather on the

day, and the support from people in

the community and further afield

was brilliant. We are very blessed to

have the support we do and I don't

take it for granted.

More photographs from the day are available on the website.

7

In due course I will be sending

letters out to those who came from

outside the Parish who contributed

to make the day so special,

especially the Zephaniah Dancers,

the Emergency Services, the

Mini-Farm, the guys with the Vintage Bikes and those

involved in the appearance (and disappearance!) of the hog.

Our thanks however must go to those around us, local

people and businesses who were so generous, especially to

Jason in Exorna Filling Station for

providing ice cream, crisps, drinks

etc. Also to Braemar for their

variety of ice cream, to

Castlerock Costcutters for their

grocery hamper, to Dominic

Higgins for his continued support

and generosity as always. To the Castlerock Scouts, who,

along with other members of the parish, delivered flyers.

We appreciate very much everyone’s support. Thank you

everyone for your generosity in sponsoring various things at

the Fayre, for your support, enthusiasm and smiles. It was

not only hard work it was great craic. Thank you from me for

working so hard.

The amount raised to date is a whopping

£8,384.40!!! Diane

LOST AND FOUND

Old drunken Tim they called him, indeed he was a sight, He begged his food from door to door, the ground his bed at night, So thus he wandered on each day, it mattered not to him. He had no home, he had no friends—none cared for drunken Tim. One day he landed in a town, he scarcely knew just how, His face was sad and worn with sin, a cloud was on his brow. But as he passed an open door, some music met his ear, Twas ―Jesus, lover of my soul,‖ so sweet, so grand, so clear, He thought he dare not enter in, they would not have him there, But overpowered that song to hear, he sat down on the stair,. He thought of early days gone by, when once he had a wife, A darling boy, a happy home, ere drink had wrecked his life. Death overtook his youthful wife, he saw here laid away, He put his boy into a home and then grew worse each day. He said, ―Ah, what a fool I‘ve been, no lower could I fall, For twenty years a slave to drink, by it I‘ve lost my all.‖ ―The evening service starts at seven,‖ he heard the preacher say, So poor old Tim rose from his seat and quietly walked away. But, oh, he yearned to hear some more and long before the hour Old Tim was seated on the steps, drawn by an unseen power, A little girl came running up, and took him by surprise, He rose and tried to be excused, the tears were in his eyes. ―Oh sir,‖ she said, ―do come inside, for soon they will begin, My father is the preacher, sir, he‘d love to have you in.‖

9

―No, no,‖ he said, ―I am not fit, I‘m bad and dirty too.‖ ―But Jesus loves you just the same, he died for such as you.‖ With earnest pleading she prevailed and led him by the hand, And saw him seated there amidst that congregation grand. The singing done, the preacher spoke, ‗twas Luke 15 he read, About the prodigal‘s despair—no home , no friends, no bread. But oh the welcome that he got—the shoes, the robe, the ring, They feasted on the fatted calf, and gloriously did sing. So thus he pictured how the Lord stands waiting to receive The vilest sinner that will come and on his Son believe. With earnest tones he led in prayer, as every head was bowed, While many there were moved to tears, poor old Tim went aloud. The congregation soon dispersed, but Tim sat in his chair, With tearful face and trembling frame, his sinful life made bare, ―What is your name?‖ the preacher asked, in anxious tones of him. ―Tim Connors‖ that‘s what I‘m called, but oftener drunken Tim.‖ Amazed, the preacher scanned his face, and said, while tears fell fast, ―You are my father, can it be? Long lost, but found at last. You put me in an orphan home, from thence I went to stay With Christian friends who brought me up and taught me how to pray, And there I learned in early years to love and serve the Lord, And father you may do the same, just take God at His word.‖ And so he did that very night, he knew his sins forgiven, He found a home and friends on earth, the Friend of Friends in Heaven! Much has happened since the last bulletin came out at the end of May. One

football season has ended and another has started. Spain are World

Champions and Northern Ireland still cannot score a goal. Our summer has

been fairly forgettable but we have not suffered any major disasters like

Pakistan or China. We have a temperate climate with no very warm summers

or very cold winters so we have much to be thankful for.

But yet we still get the odd surprise. At Summer Madness on the Sunday a lot

of tents were destroyed in the gale force winds. We had some very heavy

rain over the summer and yet on the day of the Summer Fayre the weather

was lovely. Marlyn and I have spent quite a few hours on the wee golf course

at Benone and it is surprising how often the weather has been fine. Maybe we

only notice the bad weather, not the good! And life is a bit like that. When

things are good we carry on and never consider what might go wrong. Then

we get sick or a family member is ill, and we realise how important our health

is to us. And if any sort of disaster happens we blame God!

But God really does know what is best for us (he made us after all) and when

we submit to him we can face anything. So as we move into autumn and leave

the summer behind, we perhaps need to reconsider our relationship with God.

Will we serve him and those around us, or will we only look to ourselves? I

believe it is time for us as individuals and as the body of Christ to recognise

our own faults and weaknesses and allow God’s Spirit to work through us for

the good of all.

A lot has changed in our parish over the past few weeks and months but there

is still much to do. But together with God’s help we really can transform this

Community and see a real change in the lives of our neighbours. And the

biggest change may well be in our own lives as we allow God to

transform us! So look forward to the future with hope and

confidence. Jesus is alive and with his Spirit in our hearts and

the love of Christ surrounding us we can together accomplish

things way beyond what we imagine.

God bless

‘NO!’ the children all answered.

‘If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the grass, and kept

‘Well then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children,

and loved my wife , would that get me into heaven?’ I asked them again.

Again, they all answered, ‘NO!’

‘Well, I continued ‘then how can I get into heaven?’

Jewellery

A huge thank you to everyone who

helped make the wonderful

selection of jewellery for the Church

Fayre. The support was

overwhelming from the donations of

beads and fabrics, design ideas, the

loyal band of beaders, brooch makers, the super sales ladies, right

through to the help in moving the jewellery to the church hall.

We were so grateful to the support that we got from the wider

community in addition to the loyal band of supporters from both of

our churches, who gave of their time so freely.

A big BIG thank you to everyone who took part and made this project

so successful, without them it would never have happened. Over

20,000 safety pins were used in our now ‘infamous’ safety pin

bracelets. Thank you so much.

Beth and Margaret.

Website News Since the last bulletin there has been a number of additions to

Harvest Weekend:

Launch of our Partnership

with the Diocese of

Shyogwe in Rwanda.

(Harvest Meal Friday 1st October)

Please remember our harvest weekend which is the first weekend in

October. The theme I have chosen this year is a quote which is attributed

to various people but I first heard it in relation to the Former Archbishop

of Armagh Otto Simms. The quote is this:

Live simply that others may simply live.

We can't deny that we have so much. Even in hard times financially I am

sure we all have had food on our table and a roof over our heads. I want

us to be a Parish that not only thinks about each other and the needs of

our community but also the needs of people throughout the world. Many

of you had the chance to meet and speak with the Bishop when he was

here and know part of his story, you will also know that he values above

everything our partnership in the Gospel.

We have an opportunity to reach out because during our Harvest

weekend we will share together in a simple meal on Friday evening on

the 1st October.

21

At this meal there will be a donation box for this project and then on

the Sunday of Harvest we will officially launch our Partnership with

Diocese of Shyogwe in Rwanda. These are exciting times for our

Parish and it was a wonderful experience spending time with a humble,

funny, godly and wonderful man in Bishop Jered.

He is looking forward to building a strong partnership with us. The

following is an excerpt from an email from the Bishop just after he left

Ireland:

“…I will not forget and I hope that our link

will grow up and many people will harvest

many sweet fruits from it…”

Please pray for this initiative and pray for the team of people who will

work alongside Adam and myself as we think through with CMS

Ireland the next steps.

Summer Madness (2nd July - 6th July 2010) at Belfast King‘s Hall

Summer Madness is a big Christian event which takes place each year at the

King‘s Hall in Belfast. This year the theme was ‗Dare to Share‘, daring to

share your faith with your friends.

Many people came to speak to us, but personally I think that Reggie Dabbs

was the best. Reggie is a guy from America who goes around schools

reminding the students that each one is unique and that whatever they do,

God will always love them.

These talks took place at Main Stage along with songs of worship (which

are nothing like the hymns in church!). There were lights, loud music,

laughter and lots of good craic. Apart from Main Stage there were plenty

of other things to do. They had Rodeo bulls, pretend surf boarding,

zorbing (which involves being put into a giant ball), dance workshops,

psalm drumming, summer madness has got talent, the pamper room (all

hair straighteners and make-up welcome!) and overall my favourite, the

raves!!

As well as these plus more activities, there were seminars set up for all sorts

of things. Some were for telling your friends about God, others for

answering questions that you might have about being a Christian or things

that you don‘t understand about the Bible. Summer Madness was the trip

of a lifetime and you can definitely count me in for next year.

I can‘t wait!
