From the Principals Desk

Welcome back! It has been a hectic fortnight! Last Monday it was wonderful to decorate our front gates and give our students a happy return to school. The students were so excited and full of energy and the staff were exhausted by the end of the day. We are sure you understand!! We are now eight days in and we are beginning to settle into our routines. Reporting to parents A new approach to student assessment and reporting will be adopted for Semester 1 2020. Schools are required to provide a simplified written report to parent/carers. Under the modified approach, all schools may: • provide a simplified written report in an accessible form that is easy for parents/carers to understand • describe student progress and achievement on the learning covered during Semester 1 • provide information about student attendance and commitment to learning. The grading of students using the five point A-E scale is not required. Please note, there is no standard template for schools to use, Castlereagh has adapted our report after careful consideration of the needs of our school community, consistent with the Department of Education guidelines for Semester 1, 2020. We are working hard to provide a written report for all of our students to be sent home at the end of this term. Parent Interviews Our current advice is that where schools have chosen to conduct parent-teacher interviews, they are encouraged to do so by phone or by video conference using the Department’s endorsed online platforms. There is no requirement to conduct parent-teacher interviews face to face. We are currently thinking that we will hold off on the decision for parent interviews this term, but teachers will continue to have close contact with our families by phone. The opportunity to hold parent interviews will be reviewed early in Term 3.

Afternoon pickup Thank you to our families for your support of our new system for picking up your children. As you are aware there should be no visitors to school sites unless they are essential and so we have had to find another solution to afternoon pickup. We anticipate that we will continue this current routine for the remainder of Term 2 and possibly into Term 3. NAIDOC Day Next Thursday we will be celebrating NAIDOC Day in our school. Each class under the expert guidance of Mrs Catalogna will participate in indigenous art activities celebrating our first people. We look forward to introducing normalcy back into our school curriculum and re-engaging our students back into these types of school incursions. Cakes Unfortunately for this term we have decided to have a blanket ban on birthday cakes being brought into the school. We will readdress this situation at the start of next term. Scripture As you are aware Scripture is not being run at the moment, however if you wish for your child to still participate in scripture lessons at home please follow the links below. Catholic SRE lessons are available online at the following link: Catholic SRE Online Anglican SRE Lessons are available online at the following link: https://www.toms4christ.com/sre Covid Art Creation Bravo to Mrs Cat and her creative team of students who created a mural on the side of the sports shed to celebrate the end of the lockdown here at school. As you can see they did a tremendous job under the guidance of our own ‘Artist in Residence’ and we look forward to seeing more murals popping up around the school over the next few months. I wish you all a very happy and safe fortnight ahead. Kind Regards Christine Wren

School Lunches School lunches are available to order online. Please go to www.myschoollunchbox.com.au and follow instructions on how to order.

Crunch and Sip Castlereagh Public School is a certified ‘Crunch and Sip’ school. All classes have a ‘Crunch and Sip’ break during the day where children are encouraged to eat fruit and sip water. A

tally of the fruit eaten is kept as it is one of the activities the children can complete to obtain their Healthy Lifestyle Challenge, Healthy Badge. Waste Free Wednesdays Every Wednesday is a waste free day at CPS. This means whatever food and drink wrappings/scraps that the children have that day must be taken home with their lunches, a class tally is kept of the number of children having ‘nude foods’! These are foods that have no wrapping but come in a reusable container. Thank you for your continued support for these two programs.

Ice Blocks Ice blocks will be sold Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at lunch time. They range from 50c to $2 in price.
