Relieving Principal’s Message - Ms Kearney

The Year 10 Dinner Dance was held last Thursday at the

Casino Golf Club for the first time. This venue proved to

be a very fitting setting for such a lovely event. It was

fantastic to see the support of families as they enjoyed a

LEAP FACULTY NEWS

2019 has been another fabulous year for The LEAP Centre – finishing with our celebratory end of

year morning teas for both the staff and parents/carers and families.

Students set up a mini-market for their produce

selling beautiful timber breadboards and

platters, homemade fudge and goodies,

bunches of freshly grown garlic, hand-sewn

scrunchies and shopping bags as well as a

nursery of stunning succulents, frangipanis and

potted plants. There was also a display of

outstanding timber toys made by some of our

students attending wood technology classes.

The LEAP centre would like to thank all the mainstream staff (teachers, SLSOs (School Learning

Support Officers) and our amazing office staff) who work so closely with our faculty throughout

the year supporting our students to achieve such outstanding outcomes on a day to day basis.

This year we especially celebrate a number of students who have completed TAFE courses and

found full time employment. Well done! We also congratulate all of our students who have

achieved their individual goals which they diligently work towards throughout the year and those

that are still plugging away. We say goodbye to some of our favourites who we will certainly miss

and we look forward to seeing the rest of our students in the new year.

Thank you to our wonderfully supportive families who work so closely with us when it is not

always easy. We appreciate your support and the close communication you keep with us.

Finally I would like to acknowledge and thank the incredible staff here in the LEAP Centre,

Teachers and SLSOs. This hard working and highly skilled group of people often come to school

very early, leave late, roll in during holidays and generally go above and beyond demonstrating

their commitment to our students. They are a pleasure to work with and a fabulous team!

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Christmas and looking forward to doing it all again in 2020!

Staff vs Year 11 Volleyball

Year 11 had been itching to take

on the Staff in the sporting

challenges for some time and now

that they have commenced their

Year 12 studies they finally got the

chance last week with the first

game being Volleyball.

Staff rallied and got the numbers

to play. They dominated the first

set and rattled the students taking

the set 21-15.

Year 11 had a big pep talk after losing the first set and got off to a great start in the second set

and even held the lead at one stage. Staff began to come back and there was a massive rally

with countless hits between the two opponents. Staff however narrowly took the second set 22-

20. As it was the best of three games, Staff won the match.

Thank you to both Staff and students for participating. We are all looking forward to some further

matches in 2020.

Students be prepared to try and salvage some sporting glory and Staff let’s continue to perform

well and win the Staff vs Year 12 Sporting Challenge Shield again!

Quicksmart Certificate Presentation Ceremony

On Tuesday, 10th December family and community members attended the Quicksmart Certificate

Presentation ceremony in The Len Walsh Hall as guests of the 2019 Quicksmart students.

Students received certificates of ‘Congratulations’ if they had completed three terms of

Quicksmart lessons. Students who had completed one or two terms of lessons received a

‘Progressing Toward’ certificate - this indicates that good work has been achieved but also

acknowledging that their program has not yet finished.

At the conclusion of the ceremony a delicious morning tea was enjoyed on the TAS lawn for

Quicksmart students and their guests.

Our thanks to the many guests who came to acknowledge the work of the Quicksmart students.

Special thanks must also go to the many helpers who made this event possible - the cleaning

staff, canteen staff, general assistance staff, office staff, TAS staff as well as the tutors and other

members of the teaching staff. Volunteer students from the TAS and CAPA classes also assisted

with our ceremony and the morning tea that followed – your assistance and support were very

much appreciated. To anyone who helped us in any way, you all did an awesome job! Thank

you!

ANNUAL SPELLING BEE

On Friday 6th December, 10 students were selected as finalists to participate in the Casino High

School Annual Spelling Bee. This is a Gifted and Talented program for students in Years 7 to 10

which has been offered to students for the past 5 years.

In the weeks leading up to this event, 35 students were selected to participate and went through

elimination rounds to test their spelling skills in order to qualify for the Grand Final.

The Grand Final consisted of 5 rounds:

Round 1: (Written Test) Consisted of 10 words where students were required to write

words such as exhilarating, hallucination, advantageous.

Round 2: (Team Spell) Students line up and took it in turns to say the next letter of the

given word. Examples of words students spelt: Remorseful, appreciate, compulsory.

Round 3: (Word Flip) Students were given 10 seconds to write down the given word and

had to flip their page over for the audience to check their spelling. Examples: Manoeuvre,

plagiarism, brilliance.

Round 4: Students were given a sealed envelope with three words written on the inside.

Each student was given 30 seconds to view and memorise the words. The piece of paper was

then taken away, and they had to spell all three words out aloud to the audience. Examples:

Humiliate, philosophical, circumnavigate.

Round 5: Students were given two different words to spell out aloud to the audience.

Examples: Qualification, publicity, solicitor.

At the completion of the five rounds, we calculated the scores, and had two winners.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Spelling Champions:

Stage 4: Graci Patino

Stage 5: Angela Gawiran

The winners will now have their names

engraved on the perpetual trophy.

Also, WELL DONE to all of the following

students who made it through all of the

elimination rounds and performed very well in

the Grand Final:

Stage 4: Hayden Mison, Isabela McLennan,

Abby Frame, Zoe Brus

Stage 5: Calem McGregor, Sara Cole,

Thomas Lee, Brielle Wenham.

We are now on the lookout for who might be our 2020 Spelling Bee Champions! Could it be you?
