Description:Original photograph with selection desaturated and filtered.

Date:2/7/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:I shot about 150 photos using a Sony Cyber-shot with a 16x optical zoom. I chose this particular shot because I thought I could select out the cute little feet for this project and use filters on the other parts of the picture. I cropped the picture to 6×6, 150 res. I selected the background, desatured it 100%, and increased lightness. I increased the lightness even more on the dark background above the piano bench. I selected the jeans, desaturated them about 80% and decreased the lightness. I used a water paper filter on the jeans. Then I went back to the background to try different filters and decided on a chrome filter.

Description:Full-bleed, color brochurs demonstrating a combination of program and design skills.

Date:3/28/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop & InDesign

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:I took about 100 photographs of the IBC class and business. I edited the photos I thought I could use in Photoshop. To create the brochure, I started with a piece of paper to sketch the idea and get the formatting right. I created boxes to show where pictures, logos, and text would appear. I drafted my text in a word document, then pasted it in. I created paragraph styles for all of the headers and paragraphs. This was great because whenever I wanted to see what a font change or other revision to the text would do, it implemented the changes throughout the document. I chose photos that illustrated my concepts–most had boring backgrounds, so I decided to cut out the figures and wrap the text on all the inside photos. I began with a collage of Chick’n It Out operations on the back, but couldn’t keep it from being too busy. Finally I wound up with a photo of waffle fries in the background and one of the company’s chicken tiles from their restaurant to illustrate. I wanted some color, especially on the inside of the brochure, so I used the color from the chicken for the heading text. Then I added the same color to my IBC 2.0 logo. I love that the changes to photos in PhotoShop and to logos in Illustrator can be automatically

BFHG MILD

The Autonomy OathEvery instructor will take the oath

Your New Classroom

The course outcomes shift the focus from “know” and “do” to “become.” Through the operation of a business, students will:

1. demonstrate that they are Disciples of Christ by reconciling their behavior in a business setting with gospel principles and attitudes.

2. gain a fundamental understanding of the principles of innovation and demonstrably increase their ability to innovate.

3. learn the attributes of small “L” leadership and demonstrate some personal adoption of those attributes.

4. learn the underpinnings of personal motivation and use this knowledge to demonstrably increase their initiative and the motivation of those they associate with.

5. increase business acumen in the following areas:

a. operations management

b. fi nance

c. marketing

IBC 2.0 is all about setting and attaining personal and company

goals: some carefully measured and achievable, and some that seem nearly impossible and crazy—Big, Fat, and Hairy. At any given time, a student company will have a Big, Fat, Hairy Goal to tackle.

It might be an earnings goal, a product to create, an administrator to woo, but whatever it is, it will stretch students to their limits. And when they achieve one BFHG, they will choose a new one. Failing in grand fashion will be appropriately rewarded.

We, the instructors, hereby agree, promise, covenant, and commit to you, the student, that we WILL

1. encourage you to act for yourself and accept responsibility for learning.

2. answer all of your questions with one of the following:

a. another question;

b. a suggestion for materials and sources you can use to answer the question;

c. a story, example, or parable.

We will NOT

1. get in the way of your opportunities for learning.

2. ask you to do anything we aren’t willing to do ourselves.

Description:Matching business card and letter head using an original logo.

Date:2/28/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator & InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo to fit a personal or company image. Design consistent layouts for business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:I imported a photograph I took of a violin into Illustrator where I traced the scroll of the violin and sampled the colors to create a color pallette. I added tuning knobs and the name of my friend’s violin studio. I used one of the violin colors for the background of the back of the card and put a large version of the logo on that side of the card. On the front of the card I included the logo very small with her contact information in 9.5 point type to contrast with the larger font for her name and to allow for plenty of white space.

Process:I imported a photograph I took of a violin into Illustrator where I traced the scroll of the violin and sampled the colors to create a color pallette. I added tuning knobs and the name of my friend’s violin studio. I used the violin logo at the bottom of the letterhead to flow toward the letter. I put the contact information in the top right corner and used small versions of the tuners as dividers.

Description:Ad announcing a fund-raiser.

Date:2/2/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft Word 2007, Epson scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:The event is a fund-raiser at a ski resort, so I wanted to convey action and focus on the event location. I copied the photo three times and cropped them together to look a little like a progressive series. I used Word’s soft edges feature on the photo to help the copies overlay without a hard edge. The action takes you down toward the event title, “Ski for Seniors.” The event information focuses on the location at the ski resort. I used the orange from the skier’s jacket for the word “ski” and an orange color bar. I used the brown from the tress for the rest of the words and used a couple of lines to continue the feel of motion in the direction of the text.

Description:Three distinct logos for the same organization.

Date:2/23/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop

Objectives:Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:For the apple, I used a cutout filter on an apple photo in PhotoShop. I opened the apple in Illustrator and sampled the color scheme to create a pallette. I traced using the pen and then the pencil tool, using the colors from the palette to match the original apple. I started with a sans serif font and stretched the letters around to get the sizes and shapes I wanted. I used the colors from the apple color palette for my stroke and fill.

For the leadership logo, I looked at just about every “L” letter in every font and even tried to draw my own. I finally chose the Vivaldi Italic “L” but stretched it out. I chose a more formal font for the rest of the logo to get a business feel. I decreased and increased leading and stretched the text to get the right fit. I used a gradient rectangle in the background to add contrast.

For the ABC blocks, I found a photo of some blocks to trace. I ran into layering problems again and discovered I could make better blocks with the shape tool. I found a font that looked identical to the lettering on the blocks in the picture. I used the paint bucket tool to color sections of the blocks–now I wish I’d colored the full block and sent in behind a smaller white block. I rotated the top blocks to look like they were stacked.

Description:Montage blending two photographs with an inspirational message.

Date:2/16/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:I used a photogaph I had taken of my daughter as the background. I used the bandaid tool to erase the bandaid that was on her forehead. I copied a public domain photo I found online of library books on top, then created a mask. With black paint at 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. Then With a larger bruch at a lower opacity, I blended the image into the background. I used various opacities depending on how much I wanted the books to show on top of the photograph of my daughter reading. I chose type that was similar to the fonts on the book bindings in the picture. The text is what my daugher always says to me.

Description:Black and white flier announcing a leadership conference.

Date:1/25/2013

Course/Instructor:Comm130/Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:The content of this flier was given to me with instructions to create visual appeal. The target audience for this flier is graduating seniors who are interested in improving their leadership skills with a business focus. I began by focusing on the words “leadership” and “competitive edge.” I wanted a relatively traditional font that conveyed a businessy tone, so I chose an oldstyle font for the main heading. I used it only on my emphasis words to create a focus on those two attention-getters. I thought the sans serif font was a nice, clean contrast to the oldstyle for body text.

While the first message I want a person to see when they notice this flier is that it’s about leadership, the very next message should get our company name out there. Even a person who decides the conference isn’t for them should notice our logo. So I put the logo at the bottom right which is where the reader’s eye should go next. The traditional look is appropriate for a business conference.
