Who to Contact

•Notify the HQ JTF 633-BAGHDAD watchkeeper immediately using the quickest means available (runner, VHF, phone, etc). POC:

•(02) 6224 3106 (alternate 3108).

•US DSN (318) 822 1414.

•Radio IAW SO1.

AME LZ requirements

•LZ is to be a minimum diameter of 40 meters.

•The centre of the LZ minimum diameter of 10 meters.

•The area is to be cleared of all solid objects, inflammable material, grass over 300mm high and all loose items.

•Grass up to 300mm need not be cleared unless it is a fire hazard.

•Wind Direction.

•Secure

LZ marking systems:

•By day, coloured LZ marking panels set up in a “T” shape with the base of the “T” pointing in the direction the wind is coming from.

•By day, coloured signal smoke thrown prior to the marry up with the AME helicopter asset.

•By day, providing detailed visual landmarks and a reference to AS vehicle or personnel on the ground (eg. LZ 50 meters right of large blue mosque surrounded by palm trees with AS soldier in combat equipment and DPDU-(D) standing 5 meters in front of civilian vehicle marked with CF TIP’s).

•By night, five red cyalume sticks set up in a “T” shape with the sticks being a minimum of 5 meters apart and the base of the “T” pointing in the direction of the wind.•By night, placing an active Infra Red Strobe Light in the centre of the LZ.

•By night, parking 2 vehicles at 90 degrees to each other and at a distance of 35 meters apart, with their lights shining on the centre LZ area. The wind direction is to be blowing in the direction between the two vehicles (ie bisect the two vehicles).

•Any other suitable and safe means to indicate the LZ location and wind direction.
