EBI Lock forms the heart of all BOMBARDIER* CITYFLO* and INTERFLO* solutions, providing major enhancements to capacity and flexibility and high availability in comparison with conventional signalling standards.

Gothenburg is the home to the world’s first Computer-Based Interlocking (CBI) system ever to be installed way back in 1978, now serving up

to 27 million passengers per year.

The BOMBARDIER* EBI* Lock 950 solution, a high-capacity interlocking was installed at Gothenburg Central station, successfully replacing the old system completely and with minimal disruption to existing operations.

EBI Lock 950 CBI systems supervise and control wayside objects such as signals, point machines and level crossings. The systems receive the route setting commands from the traffic control centre and then lock the route ahead of the train before releasing it after the train passes.

The Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, is a long-standing partner of Bombardier and has been one of the key customers to launch a number of rail signalling ‘firsts’ with Bombardier as part of its framework agreement.

Swedish Rail Operator, SJ, decided to replace relay interlockings with Bombardier’s computer-based alternatives in 1978 to significantly reduce costs.However, there was a need after 30 years for a new and extensively upgraded interlocking system for Gothenburg Central Station and Scandia Harbour. The installation of EBI Lock 950 has ensured a higher capacity, redundancy and increased functionality and marked the next important milestone in Sweden’s rail history.

The main requirement of Trafikverket was a smooth changeover from the legacy interlocking system to the latest generation EBI Lock 950, release 4, with minimal disruption to services or operations. The new EBI Lock 950 permits an increased capacity from 400 to 700 train movements per day. It controls more than 1,400 objects comprising 574 signals, 258 points and 585 track circuits, a prerequisite for future projects with even greater capacity requirements. The interlocking installation followed Bombardier’s upgrade of the Gothenburg Traffic Control Centre to the EBI Screen 900 control room system.

This project was completed over a period of five years and was carried out in close cooperation between Bombardier and Trafikverket. Delivering and installing an entirely new interlocking environment with minimal downtime and only on a limited number of weekends, while ensuring fully functional systems availability, was a challenge. However, the project was executed very successfully with excellent project management and on-site presence.

The seamless upgrade of one of Sweden’s busiest stations will result in major expansion in the near future with the West Link and harbour station projects like the Marieholms Bridge, Kville yard and the Sävenäs marshalling yard. It will increase capacity at the station by 50 per cent, a prerequisite to handle growing investments in the region and improve the trade capacity for the Port of Gothenburg.

Bombardier has delivered in excess of 600 EBI Lock CBI systems to more than 50 customers in over 30 countries around the world. Some of the largest EBI Lock system installations have been for Deutsche Bahn in Germany, Arlandabanan in Sweden, Metro do Porto in Portugal, ADIF in Spain, and PKP PLK in Poland, to name a few.
