CASE STUDY: W IRELESS BACKHAUL OPTIMIZATION

CFN Services is a telecom infrastructure services companyspecializing in wireless backhaul optimization, fiber, and fixedwireless transport networks, data, infrastructure, and services.

We created FiberSource , the industrys best and mostcomprehensive backhaul infrastructure knowledge-base withover 550 fiber networks across 120 markets nationwide.

With fiber proximity data on more than 200,000 wireless sites, including 80,000 tower and rooftopcollocation sites leased by the top 50 tower companies, FiberSource enables efficient wireless broadbanddeployment and optimization. FiberSource provides visibility into existing fiber served sites and sites nearfiber routes, including the wireline carriers who serve each site and the wireless carriers collocated there.

    BACKGROUND

A Tier 1 mobile carrier was operating a statewide network of more than 1,000 cell sites interconnecting with 2primary mobile switching centers (MSCs). The carrier was spending more than $15 million annually onlocal access transport services for backhaul from the cell sites to the MSCs and interconnection from theMSCs to the local telephone companys (LEC) access tandems. Planned 3G network upgrades promised todouble T1 capacity requirements at more than 600 cell sites.

    BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Reduce leased network transport costs in the face of pending capacity growth, while positioning the backhaulnetwork to support backhaul for 3G broadband data services.

    NETWORK SOLUTION

CFN analyzed the wireless carriers embedded access transport circuits, costs, and growthrequirements at the facilities level between the cell sites and the MSC, and between the MSC and the publicswitched network. Leveraging its FiberSource design platform and network optimization tools, CFN designedan optimized fiber network that interconnected the MSCs and pushed interconnection points with the LEC outfrom the MSCs to 7 strategically placed LEC central office collocations.

Working with one of the leading optical equipment vendors CFN and the vendor designed a turnkey opticaltransport platform to displace existing DS1, DS3, and SONET circuits that were at or past term. The plannedplatform displaced more than $8 million in gross circuit costs annually from the LEC and delivered net savingsof more than $6 million per year. In addition, the optical transport platform was designed to deliver an aggregatecapacity of more than 4,000 T1s which included 25% excess capacity available for growth at no additional cost.

The optical transport platform delivers 60% leased circuit cost savings and 30% net transport savings. It alsoenables the wireless carrier to double capacity on the platform for less than a 20% incremental cost, while

seamlessly integrating TDM and Ethernet transport capabilities at each network node and positions thenetwork for further optimization via wireline and wireless technologies at the edge.

CFNS offers a range of planning, deployment, and managed network services to support wireless backhaulnetwork optimization. Services range from direct fiber sourcing support, LEC collocation, and interconnection toturnkey delivery, leasing, and management.
