Solutions Continued...

Phase I - Data Collection

Lewellyn Technology Field Technicians visited the facility and collected the necessary electrical data to perform the utility connection point to the eqipment in the plant. We looked for enclosures that presented potential exposures to an arc flash hazard.

Phase II - System Modeling Single Line Drawings

Electrical data collected by our field technicians during Phase 1 was used to build a computer model of their facility’s electrical distribution system. This model was used to complete the incident energy analysis by our engineering department.

Phase III - Engineering Analysis

The results from Phase 3 was documented and provided to the facility in a report format that includes a binder as well as a CD-ROM containing electronic files of the report. A presentation meeting was held with our representative and key people from the facility to review the report and discuss recommendations.

The following has also been conducted:

- Short cicuit study to calculate potential fault currents

- Protective device coordination study to minimize the impact of equipment failures within a system if a fault is to occur

- Interrupt rating study to conform to the requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) which identifies any protective device that appears to have inadequate interrupting capacity

- Hazard labeling to indicate the Arc Flash boundary, Incident Energy, Nominal Voltage, Limited and Restricted Approach Distance for each device name

Training - Electrical Safe Work Practices

Electrical hazards, proper electrical work practices and procedures, and the safe installation of electrical equipment were discussed. Workers were introduced to the rules and regulations as required by the OSHA Electrical Safety Related Work Practices Standard 1910.331-1910.335.

ResultsAll of the company’s Electrical Workers and Facility Managers were given proper training to have a safer workplace. Their skills were updated and enhanced to do a better job for their facility. Lewellyn Technology also provided them an updated report with new one-lines and new arc flash labels and were able to mitigate the items of concern.

Quick TipMake sure that your employees wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when doing their job. Depending on the incident energy level of the equipment, a person may need to wear anything from a face shield to a full arc flash suit. In any case, electrical technicians should always be wearing a hard hat, safety goggles, voltage rated gloves and boots to avoid electrical injuries. Higher incident energy levels require more PPE.
