4‐H Members Compete in District 1

Petroleum Power Contests  

  The 4‐H District 1 tractor and lawn mower driving contests were held at the Greenup County Extension Office on Friday, Au‐gust 4th.  4‐H members par cipa ng in the contest were required to drive and back through an obstacle course.  Tractor drivers also had a back a trailer and seniors were required to back a wagon.  The top two in each category advance to the State Fair.

Kentucky 4‐H con nues to provide dynamic opportuni es for 4‐H’ers in high school.  The 2017 Ken‐tucky 4‐H Teen Conference was held June 12‐15, 2017 at the University of Kentucky.  This year the confer‐ence was near record numbers, hos ng over 700 individuals throughout the week at various events. This conference was planned for high school aged 4‐H members from across the commonwealth and involved a four day stay on the University of Kentucky campus.  The conference allows dele‐gates to tour UK’s campus, live in a dorm, par cipate in fun and educa onal work‐shops, elect the State 4‐H Officers for the next year and make new friends.     

The week began on Monday with a chance to meet the campaigning officer candidates.  The opening keynote address was conducted by Kyle Willkom from Ac on Packed Leadership, an engaging and educa onal speaker who challenged the youth to live life vibrantly and be someone’s hero.  On Tuesday, Kentucky 4‐H had the opportunity to award youth who par cipated in the Kentucky 4‐H Achievement Program and youth who obtained one of the Kentucky 4‐H Founda‐on scholarships.  Wednesday’s Fashion Revue and Performing Arts Troupe Show‐

case con nued to entertain the delegates and showcase the amazing ability of Kentucky 4‐H’ers.  Carter County sent two delegates, Alyssa Navarre and Riley Weaver, to 4‐H Teen Conference this year.  Both are freshman at East Carter High School.   They enjoyed their experiences. Alyssa shared that she learned about a new instrument, a dulcimer, and how to play it.  Riley enjoyed learning about new science experiments.   She also learned how important it is to give back to the community and how important friendship is.

Horsin’ Around with the Carter County 4‐H Horse Club  

Members of the Carter County 4‐H Horse Club members have had a busy summer.  They kicked off the official start to summer by winning the trophy for the best horse float during the Grayson Memory Days parade.   Club members Lindsay Jessie, Charlee Barker, Hayden Holbrook, Laura Riggs, and Emma Riggs designed the float using hay bales and cardboard horse cut outs to make it look like they were riding their horses at a show.    

The State Horse Contest is held in Lexington each June and includes contests such as judging, public speaking, cra s, and more.   Alyssa Holbrook placed third and earned a blue ribbon in the equipment catego‐ry for the reins that she made.   Emma Riggs earned a white ribbon in the photography category for a picture of her colt.    

The District 1 Horse Show was held in Morehead on June 17.  Lindsay Jessie and Lynnsey Bush both competed in the Walking, Racking, and Mountain division.  Both girls qualified to compete at the State 4‐H Horse Show by earning a blue or red ribbon in half of the classes they par cipated in.   Bush received four blue ribbons, two red ribbons, one white ribbon, and two first place ribbons.   Jessie earned seven blue rib‐bons and five first place ribbons, along with earning the reserve high point award for her age division.    

Bush and Jessie were both successful in their trip to the State show that took place in July in Louis‐ville.  Bush earned the following awards:

Forty‐two Carter County 4‐H members par ci‐pated in at least one event during the Kentucky State Fair from August 17‐27 in Louisville.   There were ro‐bo c challenges, driving courses, signing opportuni‐es and of course exhibits and livestock shows to oc‐

cupy a 4‐H members  me. 

Livestock shows are an iconic part of the State Fair.  Fourteen Carter County 4‐H or FFA members competed in the shows.  Results are listed below for their respec ve market classes.

East Carter High School students Gerald and Cheron Flaugher par cipated in the senior lawn mow‐er driving contest.  Cheron received a red ribbon and Gerald received a blue and was the Reserve Champi‐

on.     Gerald also competed in the tractor driving contest and earned a blue ribbon and finished in 3rd place.   Both contests included a wri en test, safety component, and required par cipants to drive and back through an obstacle course.   

 

The Carter County 4‐H LEGO Wizards competed in the 4‐H Robo c Challenge at the State Fair.   Teams competed in a “junk drawer” engineering challenged where they had to build a pneu‐ma c gripper, programmed their robots to navigate a maze, and competed in a sumobot match against other team’s robots.  Team members included East Carter High School student Riley Weaver, East Carter Middle students Landon Waggoner, MaKyla Waggoner, Ashton Moore, and Ethan Pope.   The team is coached by Gerria Waugh.   

 

Five 4‐H members competed in the Poultry Judg‐ing & Avian Bowl contests.   Elizabeth Middleton (WCMS)  received a blue ribbon and placed 7th overall in the junior poultry judging contest. Cheron Flaugher (ECHS) received a blue ribbon and placed 4th overall in the senior poultry judging contest.  Flaugher will represent Ken‐tucky at the Na onal 4‐H Poul‐try & Egg Conference in Louis‐ville in November. Other team members included Ethan Pope (ECMS), Riley Weaver (ECHS), and Gerald Flaugher (ECHS).   Pope and Weaver earned blue rib‐bons in the junior poultry judging contest and Flaugh‐er earned a red ribbon.   The contest required mem‐bers to judge eggs, broilers, and laying hens and iden‐fy poultry meat cuts.   The teams also competed in 

the avian bowl contest, a quiz contest related to all things poultry.   Cheron and Gerald Flaugher and Mid‐dleton earned blue ribbons, Weaver red, and Pope white.   The team’s shirt was one of two champions of the annual poultry shirt contest.

Close to 6,000 projects were entered by 4‐H members from all across the state in Cloverville, the 4‐H dis‐play area at the Kentucky State Fair.   Forty‐four of those projects were exhibited by twenty‐seven Carter County 4‐H members.   State Fair class champions included:  

Brady Sammons (CCA)– Ba ery Powered Circuits (Electric Division Reserve Champion) (This is the sec‐ond year in a row that Sammons has had a class champion electric project at the State Fair.)
