neF1The 2012 formula 1 season continues to throw up the unexpected, with the races in Monaco and Canada providing a further two different winners for the season, meaning that for the first time in Formula 1 history, 7 different drivers have won the first 7 races! Mark Webber converted his pole position at Monaco to a win in an efficient and controlled manner, while Lewis Hamilton, who started from 2nd on the grid in Montreal, managed to win through an aggressive strategy compared to his rivals. Both the races also provided some extra insights into the season ahead.

Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher needed to play catch-up coming into the Monaco race weekend, with only 2 points in the Championship to show for his first 5 races. After receiving a 5-place grid penalty following his collision with Bruno Senna in the Spanish Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion boldly stated that he would take pole to start from 6th on the grid and then go on to win the race. He may not have won the race, but at least the first part of his statement was true. In the final part of qualifying, Schumacher rolled back the years to produce the fastest time – the first time in 6 years that he had been in this situation. Schumacher also had a part to play in Lotus driver Roman Grosjean’s demise in the race. Whilst Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg got away fine from the front row at the race start, Lewis Hamilton’s slow start caused a slight bottle neck behind him. Fernando Alonso, in the

Ferrari got away well, but when trying to go alongside Hamilton, Alonso nudged Grosjean’s Lotus into the path of Schumacher’s Mercedes who had taken the inside line. This resulted in suspension damage to the Lotus leaving Grosjean stuck at a 90-degree angle, allowing the rest of the field to pass him at the St Devote corner. Behind this incident, the Spanish GP winner Maldonado’s Williams ran into the back of the HRT of Pedro De La Rosa. The Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi also managed to clip the stranded Lotus of Grosjean sending the car momentarily into the air causing terminal damage, meaning the Sauber, Williams and HRT all had to retire.

Up front, Webber lead from Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Massa and Vettel, and it stayed this way until the first pit stops. The key element to this and all the other races was tyre management and strategy, and Monaco 2012 certainly emphasised the former! Nearly all the front-runners started the race on the super-soft tyre (the softer of the two tyre compounds for this race). There was speculation as to how long the super softs would last though. This together with the threat of rain meant there was some serious head scratching to do especially given Monaco is a race where it is very tricky to pass other cars. This meant that for the best part of 30 laps, the front-runners kept a reasonably close convoy until they started coming in for their stops.

Rosberg, Webber and Hamilton came into to change onto the soft tyre (the other slightly harder compound tyre), and this allowed Alonso, who spent a good number of laps being easy on his tyres, the chance to make ground when Webber and Hamilton came in on lap 29. After setting the fastest time of the race at that point for 2 of the lap’s sectors, Alonso was able to make his pit stop and comfortably jumped Lewis Hamilton into 3rd place.

However, it was later conceded by the Ferrari team that potentially this could have cost them the win. If Alonso had stayed out on his super softs in the condition they were in, second or first place could well have been the achievable outcome for the race.

The other driver that made inroads around the time of these pit stops was Sebastian Vettel, who had strategically not set a lap time in the last part of qualification – therefore allowing a choice of tyres for the race, and Red Bull with Vettel decided to go down the route of starting on the soft (harder) compound. This allowed Vettel to stay out, and lead the race for a number

of laps, before coming in on lap 46. Vettel did not create a big enough gap between himself and Webber to take the overall lead of the race when he came in for new tyres, but it did mean he was able to jump Massa and managed to stay marginally ahead of Hamilton on the run up the hill towards the famous Casino Square to take 4th place from Lewis. Apparently, McLaren did not warn Lewis of the threat, instead instructing Hamilton to keep to a set ‘delta’ lap time to preserve tyres – Lewis was not happy about this lack of team communication, which cost him the place and points in the championship.

So for the front-runners, a one-stop strategy was the way forward – at points other cars further down the field were 2 seconds a lap faster than Webber, due to the nature of the tyre preservation that was going on up front. Webber also was going slower near the end of the race when droplets of rain started to fall – the effect resulted in backing up the front-runners, so for the last 10 laps, Webber, Rosberg, Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton and Massa all snaked along the circuit together, with no real overtaking attempts made. This allowed Webber to take his 2nd career win at Monaco, and cemented a 6th different winner for F1 in 2012.

“What happened to Schumacher?” I hear you cry. Well after running in 7th for a good chunk of the race, a fuel pressure issue forced Michael to retire his Mercedes. Monaco was also a significant low point for the McLaren driver Jenson Button. After failing to get into the last part of qualifying for the second race running, Button failed to make inroads during the race, spending the majority of the time trying to battle his way past Heikki Kovalainen, and in the end, a failed attempt to pass the Caterham driver resulted in a puncture that caused the Brit to retire.

Red Bull controversy

Mark Webber was none too pleased when it was proposed to him that his win in Monaco was an illegal win. After the race, a hole in the car’s floor, which featured on the car for all races up to and including Monaco, was deemed to be illegal, and the FIA requested that it was removed from the car prior to Canada. The FIA also requested holes in the Red Bull wheel hub, which were deemed to being used for an aerodynamic advantage rather than a permissible brake cooling use, be removed. Webber’s win stands, but it goes to show how the various team’s cars are closely scrutinised by the governing body in the sport, and also how close to the limits the front-running teams are developing their cars.

CanadaDespite the changes made to the Red Bull prior to the race in Canada, Sebastian Vettel made the best of the equipment beneath him to post his 32nd career pole position. The de-facto team leaders for McLaren and Ferrari (Hamilton and Alonso) also seem to be mastering qualification on the 2012 tyres, getting 2nd and 3rd on the grid respectively.

For the race itself, the focus for the spectator was on these top 3 world champions, and their battles on the circuit, and the strategies that each driver and team would use to try and gain the advantage. Where a one-stop strategy was order of the day for a hard-to-pass circuit such as Monaco, could the same attack be used for Canada where there is more room for passing, particularly on the last straight where the DRS could be deployed? As it turned out, it could work for some drivers and cars, but not for others!

Pit stop strategy certainly helped Hamilton at the first pit stop, using an undercut to jump Vettel. However, Alonso managed to get some extra pace when it was needed to jump both Vettel and Hamilton after his pit stop, 2 laps after Hamilton’s stop. By the time Hamilton managed to catch Alonso at the end of Alonso’s out lap, Hamilton’s tyres were up to full racing temperature, which allowed Hamilton to pass Alonso in the DRS zone. The Lotus of Grosjean was leading at this point until it came to his pit

nestop. At this stage, it was not apparent whether people were doing 1- or 2-stop strategies.

The way it worked out, Hamilton was on an aggressive 2-stop strategy, coming in on lap 50 of the 70 lap race - whereas Alonso and Vettel looked to be doing 1-stops. For McLaren and Hamilton, this was a masterstroke, as the new tyres came to life quickly and enabled Hamilton to close back up on Vettel and Alonso and was able to pass both of them on the remaining laps using his newer rubber to take the win – his 3rd win in F1 at this venue in 6 attempts!

It also turned out that tyre-wear for Vettel and Alonso was also making them vulnerable to other drivers. Grosjean, who was also on a 1-stop strategy for Lotus, had looked after both sets of tyres from a starting place of 7th on the grid and therefore managed to pass Vettel and Alonso relatively easily. Perhaps a bigger surprise was the Mexican Sergio Perez in the Sauber, who also on a 1-stopper, started from 15th to eventually get to 3rd. Vettel did eventually decide to pit on lap 60, but in terms of the race win, it was somewhat a case of closing the gate after the horse had bolted – however Vettel did manage to pass Alonso on the penultimate lap to take 4th. For Michael Schumacher, lady luck was not kind, as again a mechanical issue meant he had to retire his Mercedes a third of the way through the race. This time it was an issue concerning the rear wing DRS flap on his Mercedes, which was stuck in a potentially dangerous open position.

Jenson Button’s woes also continued, finishing 16th in the race in his McLaren. A gearbox leak in the practice sessions meant he could not get time to set up his car properly for the race. Set-up issues continue to be a problem for Jenson – a major problem being getting the front tyres up to prime operating temperature, which his teammate is able to do with apparent ease. Jenson is reported to be spending more time in the McLaren simulator prior to the next race In Valencia to try and get to the route of his problems.

The Canadian Grand Prix also didn’t suit the Force India drivers and their cars. Both Nico Hulkenberg and Paul Di Resta had to stick to 2-stop strategies, and suffered from higher tyre-wear, especially on the harder of the 2 compounds, and neither could make it into the points. So two very different races, with Red Bull and McLaren both on the comeback trail. The top 3 in the driver’s championship can match their form in qualification, but again, the odd surprise seems to happen in the race. Some of this is accounted for by mistakes by the big teams in terms of strategy. The other key factor seems to be tyre management, and how other teams appear to manage their tyres over longer stints. Either way, the championship this year is dramatically different from 2011. This time last year, Vettel was 60 points ahead of his nearest rival, Jenson Button. In 2012, 60 points covers the top ten drivers in the championship!

Inside the Audi R8 GT Spyder sits a 5.2-litre V10 mid-engine that delivers an outstanding 560PS. You only need to listen to its distinctive growling sound to know what immense power lies within it. A sound that evokes feelings of pure joy every time you turn the key. The V10 powerplant, which operates according to the tried-and-tested high-revving concept, is equipped with the FSI® petrol direct injection technology that has powered Audi to victory in motor racing. As well as an extra boost of power, maximum torque has also been increased, to 540 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The R8 GT Spyder develops this into particularly dynamic forward thrust across the entire rev range, up to 8,700 rpm.

The cylinder angle of 90° gives the engine a low centre of gravity. Dry sump lubrication guarantees a reliable supply of oil even under extreme lateral acceleration. It also allows the engine to be installed low – as a mid-engine near the vehicle’s vertical axis in order to enhance agility and handling. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via the quick-shifting R tronic. This automated manual

The Audi R8 GT Spyder

gearbox offers two manual and two fully automatic modes, and changes gear faster than any driver: gear changes take around just one tenth of a second at high engine loads and revs.

The challenge when designing the Audi R8 GT Spyder was to make it weigh even less than the Audi R8 Spyder, a car already packed with extensive lightweight design expertise, including the Audi Space Frame (ASF), carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) components and a fabric hood. The solution was to make use of the outstanding DNA and evolve it further. While numerous design modifications were made on the one hand, more extensive use was also made of ultra-light CFRP as a material. Many visible details in matt carbon underline how the lightweight design concept has been systematically implemented. The final result: the R8 GT Spyder weighs an impressive 85 kilograms less than the comparable R8 Spyder. The noticeable consequence of this is that the sporty power-to-weight ratio of 3.98 kilograms per kW allows this mid-engined sports car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is reached at 197mph*.*Where law permits.

The stunning lines of the R8 GT Spyder will leave a lasting impression; the characteristic front end of the Audi R8 with its angled LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights is instantly recognisable. Numerous details make the R8 GT Spyder stand out: the matt black radiator grille and single frame surround as well as the side air inlets in matt titanium grey immediately indicate this car’s exclusive status. The housings of the twin-arm exterior mirrors are manufactured from matt carbon and, to extend this look further, the flat windscreen frame can also be specified in this material at an additional cost. The enlarged front spoiler and additional flics located on the side of the bumper are also made from carbon fibre composite and provide extra downforce on the front axle.

The back end of the R8 GT Spyder rounds off what started at the front of the car. The quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system has a rear-wheel bias in order to consistently exploit the advantages of the mid-engine concept and enhance the car’s handling performance. Apart from the large matt black tailpipe trims, the LED rear lights in a clear-glass design with black inserts are an immediate distinguishing feature of the R8 GT Spyder. The bumper with contrasting paint finish and titanium grey slats enhance its stunning road presence, and the rear end also provides a visible indication of the car’s lightweight construction. Newly designed parts such as the air outlets on the hood compartment lid and the larger diffuser insert are made of matt carbon, as is the fixed rear spoiler that further increases downforce on the rear axle.

High-performance ceramic brakes are standard on the R8 GT Spyder. Their red anodized brake callipers with “Audi ceramic” inscription are visible through the forged 19-inch 5 twin-spoke Y design wheels in titanium finish. The brake discs are made from carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic. This hard, virtually abrasion-resistant material is much more durable than comparable steel discs under identical operating conditions, and weighs less too. At the same time, it withstands high thermal stress, which helps to increase the brakes’ resistance to fading. The new sports suspension that has been specially developed for the R8 GT lowers the ride height by 10 millimetres, generating added dynamism and fun at the wheel.

No matter whether you have the hood up or down – the Audi R8 GT Spyder is unmistakably inspired by a racing car. The cockpit is surrounded by the characteristic matt carbon monoposto. The sensation can be further enhanced by the numerous features that are additionally available, such as the instrument cowl, inlays and seat shells in matt carbon. The shift

paddles on the Alcantara R8 GT sports steering wheel give you even better control of gear changes, while the instrument cluster with its white dials makes sure you can take in all key information at a glance

The badge on the gear knob tells you which of the 333 limited-edition Audi R8 GT Spyder models is yours. Every time you shift gear, not only will you feel the car’s irrepressible power, you will also enjoy the special feeling that comes with owning it. It’s an exclusive and intense feeling.

FRANCISCO VALENCIA, LÍNEA DIRECTA’S CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DIRECTOR

“When a car has been written off you have the chance to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you.”

An accident in which a car has been written off is always the worst kind, because it implies the disappearance of the insured car. Francisco Valencia, Línea Directa’s Corporate Governance Director, describes to us the quality measures taken by his company, a leading insurance company for foreigners.

Losing your vehicle in a foreign country is undoubtedly a major setback for anybody. What makes Línea Directa different from other companies? First of all, the personalised service. Línea Directa offers customer service over the telephone entirely in English and German, and also acts as an intermediary and translator with garages and scrap merchants. In addition to this, we also offer different cover options which no other insurer offers, such as our amount of compensation, which is never below €1000, or when appropriate, double the price paid by customers for their insurance.

You also have a purchasing centre if customers wish to acquire a new vehicle after theirs has been written off. At Línea Directa we believe that when a car has been written off, it is an opportunity to give customers back the trust that they have placed in you. As a result, if customers ask us to, we take care of all the processes involved in buying a new vehicle in their name, including the paperwork and delivery of the vehicle to their home address.

And finally, how does Línea Directa pay compensation?Línea Directa is committed to paying compensation within 40 days at the very most, although the average waiting time is always much less. If the car is less than 2 years old, either we pay its value when new in compensation or we take care of all the processes involved in purchasing another vehicle. In addition, if the car is between 2 and 3 years old, we offer 15% more than its official value, as a quality measure.
