Achieving observation outcomes Achieving range

Achieving observations and range

UV30712

Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks. The minimum number of observations required is indicated in the evidence requirements section of this unit.

Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be required to produce other forms of evidence or asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning.

Your assessor will sign off an outcome when all criteria have been competently achieved.

There are no range statements that apply to this unit.

Achieving knowledge outcomes

Developing knowledge

You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed using the assessment methods listed below:

• Observed work performance• Witness testimony/statements• Audio-visual media • Evidence of prior learning or attainment• Written questions• Oral questions• Assignments• Case studies• Professional discussion• Employer-provided question papers and

tests• E-assessment.

Where possible your assessor will integrate knowledge outcomes into practical observations through oral questioning.

Unit content

This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content.

UV3071210

Interpreting contours: Identify specific heights, describe physical features (spurs, valleys, plateaus, re-entrants, peaks, hollows, slope angle/gradient).

Using a compass to find directions: Identifying cardinal points from a location, taking bearings from a map, direction of travel bearings from feature to feature, applying magnetic bearings and variation, difference between mils and degrees.

Walking bearings on broken terrain: Appropriate techniques (e.g. attack points, aiming off, rolling bearing, limited visibility/darkness), broken terrain (e.g. uneven ground).

Judge distance accurately on the ground: Ways to judge distance (timing, pacing, speed/distance travelled chart), check accuracy using a map.

Identifying types of compass: Thumb compass, conventional (Silva) compass, sighting compass (ranger compass, prismatic compass).

Page 13: Carry out advanced map reading and navigation across open

Outcome 2: Be able to navigate planned routes

UV30712 11

Selecting the best route: Terrain, gradient, water features, forestry features, fence lines, out of bounds areas, main lines of communication (e.g. railway, motorway, dual carriageway, canals).

Choosing appropriate attack points: Proximity to end point of leg, distinguishable features, achievable navigation, secure end point via attack points.

Selecting and using appropriate simplification strategies: Keeping short navigational legs, rough navigation, attack points, handrails, tick off features.

Choosing appropriate check points: Attack points, handrails, aiming off, returning to a previously known point, spiral search, sweep search.

Preparing route cards: Trip details, date and times, group members, medical conditions, base contact details, types of terrain, route choice, length of legs, distance, height, timings (Naismith’s rule), leg/feature notes, alternative/escape routes, consideration of group abilities.

Navigating route cards: Systematically tracking the planned route information, checking planned timings, distances and bearings for each leg, modifying the plan if needed.

Using appropriate relocating strategies when off course: Gather information (e.g. time, feature identification, back bearing, resection), plan of action (e.g. continue on route, continue towards a feature, retracing steps).

Observing appropriate health and safety measures: Medical and consent forms, risk assessment (hazards, outcomes, who is affected, controls, risk rating), emergency

procedures (e.g. first aid, contacting emergency services, rescue), equipment to meet basic needs (e.g. clothing, footwear, food, drink, whistle, torch), weather and environment (e.g. weather forecast, ground conditions), environmental issues (e.g. access law, de facto access, Countryside and Right of Way (CRoW) Act, Countryside Code).

Navigation techniques: Techniques (grid references, magnetic bearings, grid bearings, back bearing, resection, feature identification, attack points, handrails, aiming off, check features, return to previously known point, spiral search, sweep search), purpose and uses of different techniques.

Showing responses to fatigue and weather conditions: Responses to fatigue (e.g. rest, food and drink breaks, appropriate nutrition and hydration), responses to weather conditions (appropriate clothing and footwear for the conditions, appropriate location and type of shelter, escape routes).

Showing awareness of appropriate clothing and equipment: Carry and use equipment to meet personal and group needs (e.g. rucksack, clothing, food, drink, shelter), suitability of clothing and equipment for the route and conditions.
