Help Us Complete Our Masterpiece... This is more than just an annual report. It’s a testament to our community’s strength and unity. And we need your help to
complete it. Turn to page 25 to discover a collection of coloring pages. Then grab your crayons or markers and unleash your inner artist. We can’t wait to see what you help us create!

Like most everything in life, healthcare is both an art and a science. It goes without saying that we could not do what we do without scientific advances: the cutting-edge expertise of our doctors, nurses and patient technicians, as well as the incredible treatment technologies that have enhanced their ability to heal.
But we also could not do what we do without an artful touch. The compassion of a hospice nurse who worked an extra shift to comfort a family in need. The creativity of a volunteer who uncovered a way to enhance patient safety in our intensive care unit. Or the selflessness of a donor who used his entire COVID-19 relief check to buy meals for our front-line workers.
This report is a celebration of your art: all the unique perspectives and heartfelt gestures that move us forward. When our forebearers began drawing up the plans for Carroll Hospital in the 1950s, they had only an idea of what a hospital could be. Now, thanks to you—our donors, volunteers and staff—we have transformed that idea into a veritable masterpiece: a community hospital that others look to as the standard for how healthcare should be. And best of all, our work is not yet done. We are still creating new possibilities together every day.
So thank you for all that you do. Thank you for allowing us to care bravely and color outside the lines so that we can be the healthcare system our community deserves, particularly in this unprecedented time. Without you and your generous contributions, our masterpiece simply wouldn’t feel complete.

Despite creating one of the largest family foundations in Carroll County, Harold Glen and Audrey G. Benson Trumpower were never ones to flaunt their wealth.
“They were very frugal and very disciplined,” recalls Charles Stoner, who served as Mr. and Mrs. Trumpower’s family attorney from 1971 until their deaths in 2003 and 2018 respectively. “Harold treated himself to a new Cadillac every three years, and once a year he’d take his wife to the jewelry store to pick out a gift. That was as lavish as they got.”
Instead, the Trumpowers chose to direct their good fortune into their namesake foundation, designating 80 percent of its distributions to education; 15 percent to

years of their marriage.

healthcare; and five percent to animal welfare—with the caveat that all distributions had to stay in, and benefit the people of, Carroll County. Carroll Hospital and Carroll Hospice were fortunate to be among the first beneficiaries.
One gift—a $250,000 pledge—will support the new patient care wing at Dove House, Carroll Hospice’s inpatient facility. The wing will be named in the couple’s honor when it opens this year. “Harold had been a patient at Dove House, so Audrey knew firsthand the value it brings to the community,” explains Stoner.
A second $250,000 pledge will fund continuing education programs for healthcare providers and staff at Carroll Hospital.
“There is nothing more important to a hospital than retaining well-trained and highly qualified employees,” explains Lee Primm, who sits on the Trumpower
Foundation board with Stoner. “Through the gift of education, we’re putting our fingers directly on the pulse of quality healthcare in Carroll County, which was the intent of Audrey and her husband.”
“We wanted to choose the organizations that we know will have the biggest impact, and the hospital certainly fits the bill,” adds Lee Sturgill, the Trumpowers’ longtime accountant who also sits on the board. “I think Harold and Audrey would be very proud to see what their legacy is creating. Quietly proud—but proud.”
Left to right: Lee Primm, Carroll Yingling, Lee Sturgill and Charles Stoner. Yingling, Sturgill and Stoner were trusted advisors to the Trumpowers and helped form the family foundation. They recruited Primm to sit on the board in 2018.

Garrett Hoover shares his family’s philosophy on philanthropy—and how he found a kindred community when he came to Carroll Hospital.
For new Carroll Hospital President Garrett Hoover, giving back to the community isn’t a casual notion. It’s—as he puts it—in his DNA.
“I was brought up in a household where my parents were always trying to pay it forward. Everyday little things, like buying someone lunch or breakfast,” he recalls. “We believed that using the resources we’ve been given to make a difference in others’ lives is one of the reasons why we’re all here.”
It’s a legacy that Hoover now carries on with his wife, Anna Luisa, and their 8-year-old son, Christopher. Together, they donate to causes that have impacted their family, such as the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. They sponsor five children in South America and Latin America through Compassion International. They have gone on mission trips, including one to build a vocational school in Guatemala so that villagers could learn skills needed to achieve a better quality of life. And, in 2011, Hoover gave perhaps the most generous gift of all: he donated a kidney to his uncle, giving him six years of additional life that he would not have otherwise had.
So when Hoover moved to Westminster in March to assume the role of Carroll Hospital president, he was pleasantly surprised to find a community that shared so many of his values. “Not many community hospitals have the caliber of programs that Carroll Hospital does, and the support of our community has made it all possible,” he says. “I haven’t always seen that at other places in my career. It blew me away quite honestly.”
Now Hoover is looking forward to being a steward of everything that the community has built together. “I’m a firm believer in servant leadership,” he says. “Yes, I serve at the pleasure of our board, our staff and LifeBridge Health leadership, but I’m ultimately here to serve the needs of the community. That’s my purpose: to create the best healthcare possible for the people we serve.”

Thank You For Supporting UsThank You For Supporting Us
When the team set out to create this annual report, we wanted it to be a respite from all the news that COVID-19 has brought upon us since March. It was important to me to share and celebrate all the ways we’re better together—as a community—regardless of the circumstances
that surround us.
But I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how this community has come together—in ways I never could have imagined—to support the hospital in the face of this global health crisis. To date, you have helped us raise more than $250,000 to supply our front-line workers with PPE, masks, meals and other special treats through our Care Bravely Compassion Fund. You have lifted the spirits of our doctors, nurses and associates with heartfelt contributions of food, gift cards and messages of support. And you have shown how much you care for our healthcare workers, and for one another, through the simple act of wearing a mask and
honoring social distancing.
We are a strong hospital because of our community, and we were ready for this pandemic because of our community. It’s what our people do: we take care of one another. And that is a
very special and beautiful thing.
With Gratitude,

Painting a New Picture forPainting a New Picture for For seven decades, Barnes-Bollinger Insurance Services has served the Carroll County community. Now they’re ensuring specialized care at Carroll Hospital for future families.Service. Community. Family. These are the principles that have guided Barnes-Bollinger Insurance Services—and the family behind it—since 1946. Now, two generations later, father-daughter duo Dave Bollinger and Emily Bollinger Miller continue to uphold their family’s legacy with their trade—and through their charitable support shown to Carroll Hospital. “We have been blessed with clients who trust us to handle their insurance needs,” says Dave Bollinger. “Contributing to the hospital is our way of honoring them.”
As a longtime supporter of Carroll Hospital, this year Barnes-Bollinger decided to make a $75,000 donation to the Pediatric Care Center project—laying the groundwork for future generations to have access to quality healthcare in their backyard. “I’m raising two small children and I have one on the way,” states Bollinger Miller. “We knew we wanted to support this project because it will create a safe, trusting environment for children and their families.”
The new Pediatric Care Center will be a family-friendly space featuring a separate eight-bed unit, a playroom for patients and a waiting room adjacent to the hospital’s emergency department. “Having a larger, dedicated pediatric space gives us, as healthcare providers, the opportunity to form worthwhile relationships with children, teaching them to be comfortable with medical staff,”

The Barnes-Bollinger family and staff hope that the new Pediatric Care Center experience is one that creates a lasting effect. “We want people to find their forever home in our community,” shares Bollinger Miller. “Cornerstones, such as Carroll Hospital, help make that possible.”

In many ways, Thelma and Harvey “Scott” Carr can track the history of their 67-year marriage to the history of Carroll Hospital. “We had just gotten married when the hospital was built,” shares Mr. Carr. “They came to us asking for donations, but we didn’t have two pennies to rub together at the time.”
Over the years, the couple built a life together on six acres of land just four miles from Carroll Hospital. In that time, they watched the hospital mature from a modest one-story building into a technologically advanced medical campus with over 400 providers in more than 40 specialties.
Many years later, and after experiencing the hospital’s incomparable care firsthand, the Carrs decided to give back in a very distinctive way—through the Carroll Hospital Foundation’s Life Income Charitable Gift Program. The couple began the gift-giving process in 2016 when they made their first of two charitable gift annuities to the program. These annuities allow donors to transfer cash or property to a nonprofit in exchange for a partial tax
deduction and a continuous stream of annual income. The contribution creates a special bond that benefits the donor and furthers the nonprofit’s mission.
“When we gave our first gift, my wife and I were at the age where we might have to depend on the services offered at Carroll Hospital and Carroll Hospice,” states Mr. Carr. “We wanted to do everything we could to show our appreciation.”
In addition to their gift annuities, the Carrs have made an incredible commitment to Carroll Hospital and Carroll Hospice by including each institution in their estate plans. “We took advantage of this opportunity because we want the hospital to continue progressing,” says Mr. Carr. “We’ve been Carroll County residents for over 85 years, and we want to give back to our community and ensure its continued development as well.”

The Foreground ofThe Foreground of
For the past 30 years, a magnanimous league of businesses, community members and hospital partners have gathered together every September for a day of sportsmanship and fun as they ace their golf game and support Carroll Hospital.
Raising more than $6 million since its inception, the Carroll Golf Classic has become a community tradition. “Each year the proceeds benefit a different hospital project,” states Jim Miller, Carroll Golf Classic committee member and past chairman. “It’s a great event that helps increase the hospital’s capabilities.”
This year’s event was no exception. Despite COVID-19, the community rallied together—raising more than $186,000 in net proceeds. “We count on Carroll Hospital now more than ever,” shares Steve Bohn, a tournament co-founder and past Carroll Hospital Foundation board member. “This year’s tournament was an opportunity to show our strength and do our part.”
“We had a lot to overcome this year,” adds Heather Akers, special events and programs manager for the Foundation. “Thanks to our excellent vendors, volunteers and the Piney Branch Golf Club, we were able to keep the tradition alive.”
Carroll Hospital supporters par-tee with a purpose for the 30th Anniversary of the Carroll Golf Classic.

That’s why we worked hard in 2020 to bring more than $17 million in much-needed health and wellness services to our community. Every life we touch makes our community stronger.

Community Benefit ReportCommunity Benefit Report
As part of its commitment to the health and well-being of the community, Carroll Hospital provides more than $1 million in funding from the Carroll Hospital Foundation Endowment Fund for Access Carroll, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality healthcare to low-income residents of Carroll County.
This funding is used by Access Carroll for staffing, 24/7 behavioral health services, medical and dental care, hospital resources, as well as free diagnostic and lab services.
The hospital’s support allows Access Carroll to have the staff to provide 7-day-a-week assessments and intake for individuals needing detox. Access Carroll treats the whole person and serves the most at-risk individuals in the community. If patients are in a detox program, they also have access to an intensive outpatient behavioral health program, dental services and primary care. All of this begins immediately, regardless of their ability to pay. Social workers and health navigators enroll them in insurance and help with housing applications and anything else that falls under social determinants of health.
All these programs happen under one roof, which allows for what Access Carroll’s Executive Director Tammy Black calls a “hot handoff.”
“One of the benefits of having truly integrated services is that, if we are seeing a patient for detox services and they need dental care, we walk them down the hall to the dental suite,” Black says. “If you send someone across the street for a service, you could lose them.”
In FY 20, Access Carroll had 9,317 behavioral health services encounters, an increase of 33 percent over the previous year (6,991 in FY 19). Outcomes have been promising, and many patients go on to enter successful long-term treatment programs.

They’re always there to ensure every procedure goes smoothly—providing the highest standards in anesthesia, pain management and critical care for Carroll Hospital’s surgical patients. You might not see them front and center, but without the support of Carroll County Anesthesia Associates, Carroll Hospital’s compassionate and attentive surgical care just wouldn’t be the same.
Now the organization is taking its behind-the-scenes commitment one step further with a generous $225,000 gift toward Carroll Hospital’s Vision 2020 surgical expansion project. “We’ve always been aligned with the mission of the hospital,” states Kiran Kuna, M.D., chief of anesthesiology and Carroll County Anesthesia Associates chief operating officer. “We are passionate about providing quality care in the surgical units, which is why we wanted to support this expansion and modernization.”
As part of Vision 2020, Carroll Hospital’s seven-year strategic plan, the hospital’s separate peri-operative and post-operative facilities will be consolidated into one larger, more modern and cohesive unit to allow for a
better streamlined, comfortable experience for patients and families. The new unit will also create a connected and efficient work area for staff and the surgical team—allowing them time to care for patients. “This expansion will offer a relaxing and private atmosphere for patients, where they can also witness the encompassing effort that goes into delivering exceptional care,” explains Dr. Kuna. “They’ll see the state-of-the-art units and immediately know that they are receiving best-in-class care in a safe, secure and private environment.”
After more than two decades of incredible partnership, the physicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists of Carroll County Anesthesia Associates—many of whom are Carroll County residents themselves—know personally how the community’s contributions can shape the future of the hospital. “We see it and experience it, so we believe in it. We want to see Carroll Hospital continue to flourish,” says Dr. Kuna. “So many of the hospital’s facilities are community-built, and that’s something we should all be so proud of.”
