    THE SHEEP INDUSTRY

    OF NEW MEXICO

What Frnnk A. llubbcll,Deim of Now Mexico'sSheep Feeders, Accomplish-ed by Feeding for 120 Days

    A BRIEF SKETCH OF MR.

    HUBBELL'S SUCCESS

Mr. llubbcll started in thesheep business in 1885, with 5- ,-100 head of common sheep.

He now runs from 75,000 to80,000 head of improved sheep;Merinos, Rambouilettsnnd Shropshires. His breeding ewes produced 2,000 lambs in 1010. Hesold 22,000 at 8 cents f. o. bMagdalena, N. M., to average 70pounds, and retains 10,000 to feedon his immense feeding farm fivemiles south of Albuquerque.

He owns 80 ranches, patentedand deeded land.He owns, leases nnd controlsmore than 300,000 acres of grazing lands.

His watering places controlabout 140 miles of range, goingin one direction.

He has recently gone into thecattle business as a side line tosheep, and has upwards of 6,000high-grad- e cattle on his range

Last winter he fed 3,000 lambsinsisting upon conditions easilyduplicated on any farm in thestate. He built pens outside andfed alfalfa and corn, not makinguse of silos. He is enhusinsticabout the possibilities of feedingfor the market in Now Mexicoand wished to demonstrate to thesmall farmer that it was a pro-fitable way to market the feedcrops of the state. He fed for120 days and made a profit aboveallowances for feed, labor, etc.,of 27. 2 per cent in that time.

He is noworectlngsilosof from300 to 000 tons capacity and willprepare to feed as many as 15,000Iambs nnd from 300 to 500 headof cattle the coming season.

His feeding pens are locatednear the heart of his valley farmfive miles south of Albuquerque,of 2,200 acres, and adjoins hisgrant of 35,000 acres, pastures inconnection with his feedingenterprise.

The farm is equipped withcomfortable headquarters livinghouse for his farm manager, deepwells of great capacity, an ade-quate system of pipos throughthe feeding pens, large burns, storehouses, tractors, and allkinds of modorn machinery.

In the management of hisbusiness he is assisted by hissons, James L. and Prank A. Jr.tho former having charge of theranches and live stock nnd thelatter of the feeding fnrm andother interests. Mr. llubbcll hasother sons almost ready to joinhim in business. Of the threeother boys, John is assisting atthe ranches, Ramon is attendingthe University of Pennsylvaniaand Lawrenco is at the borderwith the Now Mexico troops.

Mr. llubbcll is the dean ofNew Mexico's feeding industry.A few 'years ago New Mexico

was not considered seriously nsa feeder state. But Mr. llubbcllhas demonstrated beyond a doubtjust what can he done nnd hasplaced his state on the sheepfeeding map. Ho is a typical ex-ample of the man who stakes hisall on a little flock of sheep tobegin with and who, like themajority, emerge in a few shortyears as barons of the industry.Mr. llubbcll had a distinct lik-ing for the shepherd's calling, nnd to that he attributes muchof his success. No mnn can suc-ceed in this business unless helikes it, nnd that is not a verydifficult thing for the averageman to do in the case f tho pas-toral, for somewhere in our make-up there is a streak that calls usto the open and to the tasks as-sociated with it.

Mr. Hubbell has not only help-ed himself to opportunities nndmade them count for something, but he has placed opportunitiesin the paths of others. He hasthe common touch, and he makesit felt amongst his fellows. Hemay well be considered one ofthe best champions of agriculturein general and the sheep businessin particular, in tho grent south-west. American Sheep Breeder.

    NEW MEXICO'S CHOICE

The New Mexico Republicanshave lined up in a body behindthe Hon. Frnnk A. Hubbell forthe United States Senate. Mr.Hubbell has a strong followingthroughout the entire state nndIs a strong, old-tim- e republican, highly respected by his consti-tuents and in the party concils.A selection less gratifying couldeasily be made for the UnitedStrtes Senate than Mr. Hubbell.

    HUBBELL AND BURSUM ARE

    TAKING THE LEAD

As wo said last week, and de-sire to repeat, tho Hon. Frank A.Hubbell is gaining strength inevery county of the state, andit is because of his close identifi-cation with the great industrilinterests of the state. Businessinterests desire a certain andeffective representation in theUnited State3 senate and through-out tho nation the sentimentfavoring effective and successfulbusiness men is growing, us theynre more practical than men without experience and many theories.

Mr. Hubbell is veceiveing thobenefits of this growing senti-ment nnd will go into the nextRepublican state convention back-ed by the business interests ofthe state, not just becnuso 'he isFrank A. Hubbell, a Republican, but because lie is a man close tothe people of the state and theirinterests nre his interests: onennd inseparable,, nnd his everyeffort must act for the benefit ofthe people. Those who nrospending some of their timewondering where his accumulat-ing strength is coming fromshould think over the facts fora few minutes and satisfy theirminds. - Las Cruces Citizen.

    HAVE STOPPED TALKING MCD0MAD

The democrats hove stoppedtalking McDonald, and it is saidto be because the friends of theexecutive have convinced himhe can not bo reelected, and thatthe less said about the issuesraised by his administration themore votes the next democraticcandidate will get. This convic-tion is believed to havo come totho democratic boss after a num-ber of trips through tho state. It is admitted by several thousanddemocrats of the state that thevoters made a serious mistake at

    Muni

the first election in selecting agovernor nnd it is believed theyhave made this so plain to Mc.Donald that he has decided toretire from politics, for the prosent, at least. -- Clayton Citizen

    HIE WAY IT LOOKS

Rcpo- -: from reliable sourcesnnd covering practically the entire state of Now Mexico, indi-cate that Holm O. Btirsum, forgovernor, Frank A. Hubbell, forUnited States senate to succeedTilomas B. Catron, are steadilygaining ground in their campaignsfor tho Republican nominationsfor the offices they seek.

There is a growing belief thatChas. A. Spiess, of Las Vegas, and Charley Springer, of Raton,do not look upon the asnirations

'of Bursum and Hubbell, and willgo to oxtrenie lengths to preventtheir nomination by the conven-tion on August 23. It was said

,in May that the RpioBs-Spring-forces did not want Bursum nndHubbell; that thoy merely pro-

tend to supiort Secundiuo Ro-mero, of Las Vegas, for gov-- !ernor, and were no more thanlukewarm in bolstering up sunn-to- r

Catron's fences. What was: said to be true in May appears tobo true in tho first pari of Augustand more so." State Record.
