Restoration of Malton’s CF 100 Malton has been home to eleven aeronautical industries – from the first in 1939, National Steel Car Company of Montreal. Over the years, companies have moved or closed their doors. Only two remain, Magellan Aerospace and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Canada) Aerospace.

Thousands of Malton residents have proudly worked in the industry, especially at AVRO. Other than the ARROW, their most spectacular product was the CF 100 fighter jet otherwise known as the ‘Canuck’. There are only three left displayed on pedestals. We have one right here on Derry Road. Our Canuck has sat on its pedestal for over 40 years. Planes were made to fly, not to sit with all their weight on the concrete arm of a pedestal. Ours has been slowly deteriorating, patched over the years, but never really preserved properly. For a while, it looked like the plane would have to be moved to a museum. Luckily, a bit of investigation led to Jim Hurlburt & Sons Restoration who had restored a CF 100 in Haliburton four years ago. They have agreed to take on our project. Again, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have stepped up to the plate and agreed to manufacture new panels where the old ones have been patched and provide expert volunteer labour to help reduce the restoration costs. The resulting budget will be approximately $60,000 plus tax. Several generous donors have offered the City assistance: Ann (Codlin) Barclay who wishes to commemorate her father and her late husband who worked in the industry, as well as CON-KER Construction, Orlando Corporation and K-BRO Linens - all local Ward 5 businesses. If any others would like to assist and be named on the plaque, please contact the Malton BIA at 905 499 2969. The project will begin on site the third week of July and the restored CF 100 will be declared a Heritage Artifact to ensure its preservation for many years to come. The new park Master Plan will see expanded gardens around the site, new benches and a footbridge to connect the site to Paul Coffey Park. A re-dedication will take place close to Remembrance Day 2017 with the participation of the Streetsville Legion Pipe Band, the Toronto Scottish Regiment and bands from our local schools. Watch our Ward 5 website for details.

Welcome to MaltonThe Malton BIA has had an incredible new sign made to welcome people into Malton. Working with Steel Art Designs, the sign had to go through a few additional tweaks to make it just right, but we’re thrilled with it and believe it’s a great representation of Malton and its multicultural population, as well as a nod to the community’s great aviation history.

Bridges to MaltonMalton has been isolated from the rest of Mississauga for many years. Most residents like it that way! Traffic congestion caused by 19,000 trucks going in and out of the Airport and the Industrial lands surrounding Malton, as well as commuters coming to work in the area, often cause lengthy traffic jams, especially at rail crossings. The Torbram underpass has been under construction for some time, hitting a few glitches like massive Bell telephone relocates and a huge increase in train traffic causing construction to stop until one of 30 trains a day passes by. City Council recently approved a budget increase for this project to keep it on course. Plans for the Goreway overpass are also well underway. In June, both Brampton Council and Mississauga Council will start expropriation of the lands required for the re-routing of the tracks and the shoulders of the bridge. Meanwhile the staffs of both cities have been working with CN Rail, the Toronto Region Conservation Authority, the new power company Alectra and the Ministry of the Environment to ensure traffic won’t be disturbed as detours are constructed and hydro poles are relocated. It is expected that the Goreway Bridge will be fully designed and ready to tender in Spring of 2018. FINALLY!

Summit 4 Fair FundingLibraries, public schools and social services all rely on funds from the provincial and/or federal government. Research has shown that the Region of Peel, as well as other GTHA communities, receive a considerably smaller amount of funding for these services than other Ontario municipalities – most especially Toronto. This November, the Region of Peel will be hosting the “Summit 4 Fair Funding” at the Living Arts Centre, where representatives of school boards and councils from Peel, Halton, York, Durham and Hamilton can come together to share statistics, strategy, and how we can bring a fair amount of provincial and federal funding to our respective areas.Canada 150 CelebrationsHave you seen the Canada 150 banners along Morning Star Drive, Goreway Drive and Airport Road? The banners were installed as part of the City’s celebrations to recognize Canada’s 150th birthday. I hope you’ll get involved in the festivities, especially Malton’s own Canada Day celebration at Westwood Square (see back page for details). Our third Canada Day event is going to be spectacular – there’s no better party in Mississauga! Also, in recognition of Canada 150, the federal government committed $2.5 million for infrastructure rehabilitation projects in Mississauga. In Malton, the fairytale castles playground at Paul Coffey Park received funding, in addition to trail rehabilitation at Derry Greenway and Father Joseph A. Nolan Park.

Brandon Gate Plaza RedevelopmentThe demolition of this tired old plaza has been a long time coming. With a skeleton crew of commercial tenants, including some unsavoury characters that preyed on vulnerable students, the plaza had been deteriorating for quite some time. The owners have been trying to replace derelict buildings and a sea of cracked paving with residential units for over fifteen years. One major stumbling block was Pearson Airport Management. They were concerned about putting infill housing in areas where the sound from overhead flights might generate increased complaints to the GTAA. Since the last municipal election, I have made it a priority to establish a good working relationship with the GTAA. It has a huge impact on the Village of Malton and the potential to assist with its rejuvenation. The airport has responded by contributing to Malton’s Canada Day each year, to the Castles Playground and to many other projects. Most significantly, the GTAA has agreed to infill developments such as the Brandon Gate homes, as long as they have adequate sound-proofing measures built into them. Brandon Gate will be the first such development. Twenty-six modern, attractive semi-detached homes passed through the Council’s Planning Committee on May 29 after several opportunities for public input. YOUR HOME DEVELOPMENTS listened. They reduced the number of units and included a small mixed-use building which has a substantial ground floor convenience store with two residential apartments on the second and third floors. The existing brick wall around the site, which is in good condition will be retained. The twenty-six, modern brick homes will be attractive additions to a neighborhood of single detached and semi-detached homes. Their lots will be deeper than those of current houses and they will have substantial driveways discouraging any need for on-street parking. I’m sure the neighborhood will welcome the addition of attractive, modern homes and the families who are anxious to live in the wonderful Malton community.
