An Absolutely Necessary Election When a government is caught breaking the basicrules of our democracy, it is the duty of everyMember of Parliament to end the abuse. TheHarper government is the first in Canadianhistory to be cited for Contempt of Parliament.

Within the last year, senior Conservatives havefaced charges of election fraud and influencepeddling. The Harper government has tarnishedCanada’s Parliament, the People’s House, by:

• Proroguing Parliament twice in order to avoid being

accountable for its actions

• Firing and intimidating officers of Parliament for

speaking against the government

• Misleading Parliament and refusing to provide

essential documents to Parliament

As the Critic for Democratic Renewal, CarolynBennett has demanded the Conservatives be heldaccountable for their repeated, secretive, under-handed actions:

• She challenged the government’s decision to weaken

the census by tabling a Private Member’s Bill to

amend the Statistics Act to make the long-form

census permanent.

• She has worked with her colleagues to develop the

Liberal Party Open Government Initiative to make

government information more accessible useful to

Canadians.

Liberals will Act for Canadian FamiliesThe Liberal Party will invest in the priorities ofCanadian families – established and new, traditional and non-traditional. Our ‘Family Pack’will bring vital reforms to Learning, Pensions andCaregiving:

OUR CANADIAN LEARNING STRATEGY will secureearly childhood development and care, aboriginaleducation, language training for New Canadians, and access to higher education. Our EarlyChildhood Learning and Care Fund will be $500million in the first year, rising to $1 billion in thefourth. Our Learning Passport plan will provide$1,000 per year over four years to every highschool student for college and university; or$1,500 for low income families to make the mostof their education. As Michael Ignatieff has said:“If you get the grades, you get to go!”

A STRONGER PUBLIC PENSION SYSTEM will helpworking families save for retirement. Liberalswant to strengthen the core Canada Pension Planby gradually increasing benefits, and give familiesthe option of topping-up their savings with avoluntary supplement; the new Secure RetirementOption. We will also boost the GIS by $700million to protect the poorest seniors.

THE FAMILY CARE PLAN will enhance care for ourparents, grandparents and sick loved ones byreducing the pressure on thousands of strugglingfamilies. The plan provides tax credits forcaregivers and makes it possible for them to taketime away from work without losing their jobs.

Defending Canadian Health and Healthcare Carolyn Bennett is a leader on health andhealthcare in Canada. As the former familyphysician to so many citizens of St. Paul’s, shecontinues to be passionate advocate for betterhealthcare, improved public health, and ahealthier Canada. Carolyn was Canada’s first everMinister of State for Public Health. Sheestablished the Public Health Agency of Canadaand set up the Public Health Network forCanada.

The Conservatives have failed to accept anyresponsibility for health and health care. A Liberalgovernment will be a real partner with theprovinces and territories to keep Canadians welland defend free, quality, timely medicare for allCanadians. Our priorities will include:

• Ensuring quality homecare and prescription drug

coverage in the next Health Accord.

• A new Canadian Health Promotion Strategy to

encourage healthy lifestyle including Canada’s first

National Food Policy

• Our Canadian Brain Health Strategy will help us find

better ways to treat dementia and Alzheimer’s

Disease.
