The Bottom Line
If you aren’t careful with these, you should be.
We can’t assume that our students know this.
They are too trusting and don’t understand the implications.
For children, identity theft is a problem.
Online stalking is also a problem.
SO, HOW DO I GET YOUR
INFORMATION?
Phishing
Derived from the early internet term “phreaking” which means “to hack a computer system”
You (the computer user) provide your own personal information.
How? Email scare tactics Email promises of big money Pop-ups with promises of big ticket items
How do I protect myself?
Ignore those emails. Delete them UNOPENED, if possible.
Contact the “sender” if you are really concerned.
Report phishing emails to the company that they claim to represent.
Use common sense. Teach your students.
Pharming
Malware or spyware Upload personal information Use your computer behind your back
Who is responsible for this? You Downloaded music, video, photos,
text, etc.
How do I protect myself from pharming?
Download wisely and carefully. Use software that will monitor your
computer for viruses, malware, spyware, etc.
Pay attention to your machine. Windows Task Manager – USE
CAUTIOUSLY!!! Alert the students.
Firewall
Slows or stops the fire Prevents outside access Microsoft Windows provides a
firewall. Work with the settings to find what’s
right for you.
Protection Software
Should be able to handle Viruses Spam Spyware Malware
What do I do?
Regular software upgrades for both operating system software (i.e. Microsoft Windows) and other software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.)
Purchase/download anti-virus/anti-spyware software, configure it for regular scans, and USE IT!!!
USE COMMON SENSE!!!
