Dear Parishioners, Hasn’t our later August sunshine been a blessing. Giving up hope of any summer weather at all, at the time of writing we have had a week of lovely sunshine. Whatever you have been doing over the summer months, I hope you have taken time to appreciate and take pleasure in the wonders of creation given to you by your Abba and that you have had opportunity to rest in Him. We all need that time of rest before we start back into the routine of life. School life has implications for parents as well as children. Our Church life will get busy again and thanks need to go to those who plan the evenings and events for us to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming Johnny McFarland, who will be joining us for a few months from September. For some in our Parish, it will be new life as newlyweds, and sadly for others, it will be getting used to life without a loved one. Wherever you are, rest assured that God is in there with you. Remember Jesus’ words from Matthew 28:20 “I am with you always to the end of the age”. He is with us every part of our journey. I know that some of you have had some exciting journeying over the break, but I wasn’t further than Bushmills this year, where I had time to meditate on “journeying”. (I would like one day to do part of the Camino Way journey – a famous route of pilgrims since the middle ages ending in Santiago de Compostela, where tradition has it the remains of St James are buried. Even though there is an “easy” route, I will have to be a bit fitter to contemplate it - so watch this space!) One journey in particular struck me, the journey of the Magi – they met with the baby Jesus and it changed the path they took. Of course, meeting with Jesus always changes the path we take. Wherever you are on your journey with Jesus, let Him guide your footsteps. Proverbs 3:6 “In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths”.

With love in Christ,

CarolSafeguarding Trust Training Evening

Wednesday 2nd Sept. 8-9pm in the Memorial Room Our annual review of our Safeguarding Trust procedures will be held on the above date. It is important that everyone who has a leadership role in the church’s youth or children’s work, whether with the Sunday School, Just Us or the Brigades, attend if at all possible. Please note the change of time from the previous magazine to accommodate one of Team Faith who will be coming on from work.

Fellowship Group MeetingThursday 3rd Sept. 7.30-9pm Memorial Room

As notified in the summer, Johnny McFarland, our Ordinand on student placement, will lead this evening for us to share something of his own story and discuss issues of faith and the experience of depression. All are welcome.

Noon Day PrayersWednesday 2nd September

Please join us in church at midday in our monthly time of prayer for the parish and the community. This is a short reflective time of prayer and all are welcome.

In MemoriamWilliam (Billy) Gault - Billy Gault died at home at the end of June after some months of illness, endured with quiet stoicism. He was a loved and loving husband to Helen and a devoted father, grandfather and even great grandfather. He and Helen had nearly 60 years of partnership in their marriage. They brought up their two children, Heather and David, in their first family home in Elmfield Road. Billy had a Brethren background, but he was very supportive of Helen’s deep commitment to the Church of Ireland, and the family have had a long connection with the parish. Billy was a very strong, private and independent man, who worked hard all his life to care for and provide for his family. He and Helen knew many ups and downs in their life together, especially in the aftermath of the tragedy that befell their daughter Heather in her early 20s, but Billy remained strong and supportive throughout such difficult times. He knew increasing ill health in the last years, but he retained his independent spirit to the end. He will, I know, be greatly missed by his family and friends, and we assure them all of our prayers in their time of sorrow.

Eileen Charters - Eileen Charters also died at the end of June after a short illness and is greatly mourned by her two daughters, Irene and Christine, together with their families here and in America. She had lived with Irene, her son-in-law Terry, and their family in Collinbridge Park for over 30 years since the sudden death of her much-loved husband Bob in his fifties. She was an energetic, enthusiastic and active woman with a great zest for life and a mischievous sense of humour, who took an active part in our church life, including the Mothers’ Union and the Bowling Club, until hip and knee problems took their toll and her life became more confined. She was, however, still travelling to visit her elder daughter Christine, long settled in America, until just a few years ago, and her adventurous spirit led her to travel widely with both daughters and extended family. With five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren between the two families life was never dull for Eileen and her indomitable spirit carried her through many difficulties. She worked for a number of clothes retailers as a buyer and was always immaculately dressed and

Dance Class It is with regret that I have decided to call it a day and to discontinue the Wednesday evening Dance Class held in the church hall. These classes have been running since 2000 and this has been a difficult decision.  I would like to thank all those participants who have come along to support me over the years. I have thoroughly enjoyed the classes, had a lot of fun, and made some very good friends and it is very encouraging to know that we still keep in touch, and of course meet socially. Anna Brandon

Church of Ireland Men’s Society Our programme for the Autumn/Winter begins on Tuesday 8th September at 8pm, and we encourage all our members and any interested friends to come along to the meeting. The speaker will be a representative from ‘ONUS’, an organisation which promotes Child Protection and better understanding of the responsibility for dealing with this important issue in the community. It should be an interesting evening, so why not be there and add your questions to the discussion.

very elegant herself and a joy to visit. Her vibrant personality will be keenly missed by family and friends and our prayers are with them at this sad time.

Colin Adams - Colin Adams, loving husband to Anne, father to Gavin and Julie, died suddenly in hospital on 23rd July 2015. A celebration of his life was held in the church on Friday 7th August 2015 and afterwards to Carnmoney Cemetery. Colin, the youngest of three brothers, was born and bred in Belfast, and after a short spell at Belfast Stock Exchange on leaving school, Colin went to work for Northern Ireland Electricity Board where he worked for forty-one years. This demonstrates how committed Colin was to anything he undertook. He was a loyal and good worker and was very highly thought of by his colleagues. He was sensitive, compassionate and generous in his dealings with people, a true friend. And of course he was also great craic – with his quick wit and his dry sense of humour. Colin and Anne met one New Year’s Eve and they were married in St Paul’s, Anne’s home parish. They lived together in Glengormley where they had their two children. Although he enjoyed reading, music, gardening and sport, the real love of Colin’s life was his family. He and Anne loved to travel and there were many family holidays at home and abroad. Colin was a man who loved his family deeply, and we pray that the memories of happy times shared will help to ease the shock of his passing and the inevitable sense of deep loss. We commend his family to your prayers.

Mothers’ Union will recommence on Tuesday evening, 22nd September with our church service, beginning at 7.30pm.  I look forward to welcoming back old members and hopefully new ones as well. Mothers’ Union is an inclusive organisation. We welcome men, women, parents, non-parents, grandparents, clergy, bishops, those who are married and those who are not. We just ask that you support our aim to provide Christian care to family life. We have built our new programme around our 2016 theme ‘A CELEBRATION OF FAITH’.  Anyone who is interested in Mothers’ Union should just come along to our meetings on the fourth Tuesday each month, commencing 7.30pm, January to December, excluding June, July and August.

Recycling for Restoration Fund This month we raised  £49 from scrap metal, £40 from clothes and £10  from books.  We would appreciate it if clean clothing, including shoes (in pairs), hats, belts, handbags, bed linen and curtains (no duvets, pillows or cushions) are left in the church hall, and please do not put any other items, such as ornaments or books, in clothing bags. Scrap metal, including aluminium and steel cans (preferably in separate bags), electrical items, including leads, cables and any items with wiring attached, such as phones and chargers, can be left at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on 9084 4093 to ensure someone is at home before delivering items  as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors or draw unwanted attention if we are away at night. Also, please do not put any glass in bags of scrap metal. So, before you bin or kerbie, think recycle for the church - if in doubt ring us.

How to Have a More Healthy Heart

Gratitude can help you recover more quickly from a heart attack. So says a study by the University of California, who examined gratitude as part of an outlook that involves appreciating the positive aspects of life, and often goes hand in hand with spirituality.

It was found that people who have a life attitude of being grateful are also likely to have a better mood, better sleep, less fatigue, and lower levels of inflammatory bio-markers related to cardiac health. Researchers said they were surprised to find that gratitude accounted for such beneficial effects. As one scientist put it, “It seems that a more grateful heart is indeed a more healthy heart.”

Appeal For Singers We would like to organise a choir to go to the local Nursing Homes to sing Christmas Carols with the residents. Ashwood, Dunnaney &  the Glebe have all indicated they would be pleased if we could do this. An initial get-together to practice and plan will take place on Wednesday 14th October at 7pm in the church, and all ages and abilities are welcome.
