STEWARDSHIP AT OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION

Thank you for the August 15th and 16th offertory collection of $7,565.54, the special collection for The Assumption of Mary : $902.00,

and the collection for the Church in Latin America: $2,700.63.

Collection for OLA’s St. Vincent de Paul Ministry August 29th & 30th will be our Fifth Sunday collection for SVdP. Our SVdP ministry serves the needy within our parish boundaries. SVdP could not provide this vital help without your continued financial support. Our Home Visitation Ministry provides once a year rental, utility and related help. Our Food Locker ministry provides enough food to serve 3 meals a day for 3 days for each person in the client’s household. Clients may come to the food locker every other week. This food

is paid for with donations and food donations from parishioners. Our clients are truly grateful and send you God’s blessings. If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one. - Mother Teresa

Ministry Days September 26th—Fr. Eduino would like to invite those persons who feel a strong call and devotion to two years of active ministry to attend a day of formation and fellowship at St. Francis High School in Sacramento with the fee covered by OLA. The theme of this year’s conference, Gathered as One, challenges each of us to remember that the work of the church is a collaborative effort. We are called to be one body as we carry out the mis-sion of Jesus together. As we try to renew our parishes and schools as centers of hospitality, centers of prayer, centers of formation, centers of evangelization and centers of service, we must allow our-selves to be “Gathered into One by the Holy Spirit”. There are many workshops to choose from which highlight various ministries, for example: Adult Faith Formation, Bereavement, Catechetical Leadership, Catechesis & Teaching, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Justice & Service, Lector Ministry, Stewardship, Respect Life, and many more. If you are ready to commit to two years of active ministry, all you need to do is download and com-plete the application form and turn it in to the parish office prior to September 10th. Monday, September 14th at 7:00pm - It is a very important part of the faith of each parish member to invite people to join our Catholic Church, the true church founded by Christ and faithful to his teachings. Each of us has the op-portunity to do this and people love being invited gently but lovingly. Monday, September 14th at 7:00pm an In-quiry Class will be held in St. Paul’s Room located to right of the Parish Office, accessible from the Walnut Avenue parking lot. People who show interest in the Catholic faith have a chance to become Inquirers and if they wish, later join the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA). God bless you and this very important work of bringing Christ to others, as He commanded us.

† Grief Self Help Group † September 3rd at 4pm - The OLA parish is starting a self-help grief (bereavement) group. It will start on Sep-tember 3rd and will meet from 4:00pm till 5:30 and on the first Thursday of every month in St Paul’s room. It is for anyone who has lost a loved one through death. Top-ics will be determined by the facilitator and the partici-pants. To attend please call Dave at 481-1607. He has extensive education and experience in this area and will be the facilitator.

Spotlight P.E.R.T Club What is the PERT club? Well, their name says it all... “People Enjoying Retirement Together.” This group started in Our Lady of Assumption back in the late 1960s, when retired parishioners decided they enjoyed each other’s compa-ny and wanted a more definite time and place to meet each other. The invitation was shared with neighboring parish-es and there are some members who have participated from St. Mel’s, St. Ignatius and St. John’s Catholic churches. Some members, like George Peres who joined in the 1980s, are still active. When asked about the average age of members, George laughingly responded that it has gotten older “over the years” and now may average about 75 years old.

There are about 30-40 active members who meet once a month at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month, in St. Johns hall. For new members, there is a one-time initiation fee of $3 for a lifetime membership! While past presi-dents served the club for a one or two year term, the club now has a rotation of leaders who preside over the meetings for a two month interval.

There is a brief business meeting to advise members if there are any special events coming up, such as the July meet-ing when hotdogs were served as a picnic, and the August meeting when senior tap dancers will be performing. There are prayers for any special intentions, especially for those members who may have become ill. The meetings are informal and members are able to visit and share stories of themselves and their families. At noon, the members share a potluck meal, followed by BINGO. For $1 per card, participants play for cash prizes. For a 50 cent ticket, there is also a lottery drawing. The collection of fees from bingo and the lottery allows the group to purchase a cooked turkey from Sam’s Hof Brau at Thanksgiving and a ham for the December Christmas pot-luck. Another PERT member and club past president, Dave Mitchell, stated there are two or three carpool trips annually for shop-ping and enjoying local attractions. In the Spring, club members often make a trip to a flower farm and wineries in Plymouth, while in Fall, there is an annual trip to Apple Hill.

What is there not to enjoy? Friends, food and fun in a shared faith setting! Please consider joining us and come to our next meeting!

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

Alzheimer's Care Giver Support Group September 8th at 4pm - The OLA parish is starting a group for the care givers who have a member of their family with any form of dementia. It will start on Sep-tember 8th and will meet from 4:00pm till 5:30 and on the 2nd Tuesday of every month in St Paul’s room. The disease of Alzheimer's will be the primary focus. Topics will be determined by the facilitator and the participants. To attend please call Dave at 481-1607. He has exten-sive education and experience in this area and will be the facilitator.

Christian Meditation Group In an age of rush and noise, it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. “Be still and know that I am God,” says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells in our own heart. And, in finding

Interested In Becoming Catholic?

Mondays at 7:00pm - The Catholic Church can be a bit mysterious, confusing and sometimes intimidating to those not familiar with it. So, we are providing this information as a starting point.

Each Monday evening starting at 7:00 pm in St. Paul’s room (next to the Parish Office), we have a class for questions. These sessions are called Inquiry and are open to anyone, believers from other churches, non-believers and Catholics who have been away from the Church. You are welcome to drop by the Inquiry group.

We will discuss any topic on your mind, whether questions about Mass, about various Church teach-ings, how Catholics practice their faith, how we en-gage society to spread the Gospel or Christ’s message of love and hope to the world. Once you feel comfort-able, the discussions can move toward the process of becoming Catholic, but only if you choose.

Noticing that Jesus had given them a good an-swer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” an-swered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:38-31 Please join us in our prayer fo-cus this year.

We are excited to announce that our students will be at-tending Mass weekly. We will attend on Friday mornings at 8:00 a.m. with the parish. On the first Fridays of the month, the classes will be leading the Mass and it will take place at 11:00 a.m. in lieu of the 8:00 a.m. Mass. Pa-rishioners are always invited to attend with us.

SCRIPTURE MESSAGES

Love Is A Choice Today’s Readings bring the Miracle of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes story full circle, while wrapping up the discourse on the Bread of Life.

The First Reading presents the Jewish people with a choice: Yahweh or the pagan gods. Joshua tells the people that they must choose between Yahweh and serving pagan gods. It was thought that many among the Israelites who left Egypt with Moses were pagan slaves, who took the opportunity to escape and incorporate themselves into the people. Today’s Responsorial Psalm highlights the benefit of humility when seeking the Lord’s help in adversity. We must be humble and vulnerable in order to follow wherever God leads us. As in the previous weeks, it is the same hymn of wisdom and thanksgiving. The psalmist gives us a good example of the attitude of gratitude.

Today’s Second Reading focuses on marriage. First we find the attitude husbands and wives should have toward each other. Then there’s the analogy between the bond of husband and wife to the bond between Christ and His Church. Not only is the husband obliged to love his wife, but both are mutually obligated to honor and support each other. This marriage teaching is very positive for it casts marriage in the light of a foreshadowing of the union be-tween Christ and His Church.

Today’s Gospel continues the story of Christ introducing the teaching on the Eucharist. The majority of the people could not accept His teaching, so they left Him, murmuring against Him. At this, Jesus turns to His Apostles and asks if they too will abandon Him. They recognized that Jesus was God’s Holy One, so St Peter, speaking on their behalf, told Our Lord that they had nowhere else to go. This was one of those rare and beautiful moments in Scrip-ture where the Twelve are given a very positive opportunity to profess their faith in Christ. May we always be so blessed in professing our faith.

Words That Are Spirit And Life Today we conclude our reflection on chapter 6 of the Gospel of St John where Jesus proclaims that He came to the World to give His Body and Blood for the life of the world. Jesus offers His life to us so that we might live and have eternal life. Some people abandoned Jesus because they could not accept His teaching. This prompted Jesus to ask the rest of the disciples if they too were leaving. Peter responded that Jesus had the words of eternal life. Peter rec-ognized that His words are Spirit and Life. As Peter and the other disciples followed Jesus they received the Holy Spirit by Whom Jesus gave them a share in His life and love. They became filled with the love of God. They received the life of Jesus as we do when we celebrate the Eucharist and receive the Lord in faith. We receive His eternal love leading us to love one another. Love is the sign that we belong to Jesus. That is the attitude that St. Paul reminds that couples are to have towards each other. Husbands and wives are equal before the Lord and are brought together to love each other as Christ loves the Church. Therefore, like the people of Israel told Joshua that they will follow their God; let’s follow Jesus in faith so that He may give us His love and life. Through faith in Him we will be able to love one another.

John Paul II asked us to recognize that “there must be no lessening of the impetus to preach the Gospel” to those who are far from Christ, “because this is the first task of the Church”. Indeed, “today missionary activity still repre-sents the greatest challenge for the Church” and “the missionary task must remain foremost”. What would happen if we were to take these words seriously? We would realize that missionary outreach is paradigmatic for all the Church’s activity. Along these lines the Latin American bishops stated that we “cannot passively and calmly wait in our church buildings”; we need to move “from a pastoral ministry of mere conservation to a decidedly missionary pastoral ministry”. This task continues to be a source of immense joy for the Church: “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance” (Lk 15:7).

The scope and limits of this Exhortation

16. I was happy to take up the request of the Fathers of the Synod to write this Exhortation. In so doing, I am reap-ing the rich fruits of the Synod’s labours. In addition, I have sought advice from a number of people and I intend to express my own concerns about this particular chapter of the Church’s work of evangelization. Countless issues in-volving evangelization today might be discussed here, but I have chosen not to explore these many questions which call for further reflection and study. Nor do I believe that the papal magisterium should be expected to offer a defini-tive or complete word on every question which affects the Church and the world. It is not advisable for the Pope to take the place of local Bishops in the discernment of every issue which arises in their territory. In this sense, I am conscious of the need to promote a sound “decentralization”.

17. Here I have chosen to present some guidelines which can encourage and guide the whole Church in a new phase of evangelization, one marked by enthusiasm and vitality. In this context, and on the basis of the teaching of the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, I have decided, among other themes, to discuss at length the following questions:

a) the reform of the Church in her missionary outreach; b) the temptations faced by pastoral workers; c) the Church, understood as the entire People of God which evangelizes; d) the homily and its preparation; e) the inclusion of the poor in society; f) peace and dialogue within society; g) the spiritual motivations for mission.

18. I have dealt extensively with these topics, with a detail which some may find excessive. But I have done so, not with the intention of providing an exhaustive treatise but simply as a way of showing their important practical impli-cations for the Church’s mission today. All of them help give shape to a definite style of evangelization which I ask you to adopt in every activity which you undertake. In this way, we can take up, amid our daily efforts, the biblical exhortation: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say: Rejoice” (Phil 4:4).

CHAPTER ONE

THE CHURCH’S MISSIONARY TRANSFORMATION

19. Evangelization takes place in obedience to the missionary mandate of Jesus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20). In these verses we see how the risen Christ sent his followers to preach the Gospel in every time and place, so that faith in him might spread to every corner of the earth.
