Pardon the cliché, but . . . “Time flies when you’re having a good time.” Well, it’s already time for me to

move on and yes I have had a great time. As I look back, there is much to be proud of and thankful for. Accolades abound -- to past leadership, your 2011 Board of Directors, committees, Carmel staff and employees, and to you the membership, for your widespread support of Carmel. It has truly been an honor to be your president.

Before going further, there are several people I want to recognize and thank. First, of course, is my wife Judy for her en-during support over the past 5 years. She has been a real trooper, particularly during this final year. Thanks also to the Board of Directors, especially Ed Hastings and Mark McEwen for their 4 years of dedi-cated service. And none-the-least, sincere gratitude to my fellow Carmel members for your encouragement over the past 12 months, particularly those that attended the 1st Wednesday of each month.

Finally, 2011’s exceptionally high marks would not have occurred without the unwavering commitment of staff and employees, whether behind-the-scenes or front-and-center. I had the opportunity to attend the Employee Recognition Party at Carmel on November 28th. The enthu-siasm runneth over. Carmel employees thoroughly enjoy camaraderie with both colleagues and members. Believe me, high employee morale is synonymous with ex-ceptional membership satisfaction. Thanks to General Manager John Schultz and his entire team.

Forgive me for reminiscing a moment, but in 2011, the opening of the South Course (spearheaded by Ted Barnes), the planning and implementation of the new Tennis Complex (Rick Menze-- torch-bearer), our impressive financial strength (Finance Committee headed by Ed Hastings) and 89 new members are all cause to celebrate.

And for me, the Fireside Chats were a hoot. I will always enjoy these memories. Yet those events are now history and so we look forward to the opportunities and chal-lenges ahead.

Congratulations to Mark Anderson, your 2012 president. Having worked with Mark for 4 years, I know he holds the entire membership’s best interest at the highest level and will seek to continue the posi-tive trend of member satisfaction. I would encourage your participation in commit-tees to assist Mark and Carmel’s continued positive progression.

As for a little unfinished business, you may recall that several of my previous Carme-line letters addressed “Courtesies & Tradi-tion,” “Membership Respect” and a host of other terms of goodwill. Those topics were driven, in my opinion, by the absence of a fraternal atmosphere. (Please know that I use the terms member(s) and fraternity as all-encompassing.) Yes, we have terrific facilities. Yes, we have devoted staff and employees. And yes, we have a member-ship that is the envy of a thousand other clubs. But somewhere along the line, we, as a community of members, tend to lose our sense of ownership in Carmel’s fortune. Everything that goes on at Carmel, and I mean everything, affects us all. We are in this together and, from inside the gate, it is not about “us versus them.” Carmel’s pervasive culture often appears to focus on the preverbal “me.” I believe that to instead pursue a culture of “us” will strengthen Carmel as a club, and relieve much of the tension and frustration that surfaces from time to time, tension that we actually come to Carmel hoping to escape.

Moving toward a culture of “us” here at Carmel requires trust. To gain the trust of all may be insurmountable, but there is nothing wrong with having positive goals. My Fireside Chats were directed at gaining the trust of anyone wishing to participate.

Dear Members:I’m honored to serve as your Club President in 2012. Paula and I, along with our son and daughter, have enjoyed the Club and its membership for the past fourteen years and look forward to the future with great anticipation. While we have always enjoyed its first class facilities, we feel that the Club’s greatest asset is its diverse and friendly membership. Many thanks to Jack Morgan and the board members who preceded him in guiding Car-mel down a pathway that has created the preeminent family country club in the South. As a Board, we will continue to focus on ensuring that Carmel provides the best experience for all its members.

2011 was an exciting time at Carmel. We saw the completion and opening of the new South Course, the opening of the new Honors Terrace and the commencement of the new tennis facility. We expect to open the new tennis facility in March 2012. These new improvements are elements that make up part of the existing strategic plan. As part of our ongoing strategic planning initiative, in 2011 the Board directed the Long Range Planning Committee to review and revise the existing strategic plan to take into account past capital projects, existing membership enrollment, future membership assumptions and future capital projects. This review is ongoing with plans to submit an initial report to the Board by the end of first quarter 2012. We anticipate that the report will provide, among other things, guidance on future capital expendi-tures. Stay tuned.

In 2012, we plan to reinstitute the Services and Efficiency Committee to look into our current Clubhouse operations. With input from management and membership, our plan is to review our existing offerings and determine any changes that may be warranted. The goal will be to increase our level of service to the members while maintaining the value of our current menu and other service offerings.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

There are other methods available, and we must be open to them and accept that positive change takes time to achieve. “Stir-ring the pot” over selective issues outside Carmel’s normal communication circle is not a recipe for trust. I urge us to all take a deep breath, be thankful for what we have in this world and commit to the Carmel fraternity whose mission is devoted to its members’ fellowship.

Now that is off my chest. I will again thank you for the honor of being president in 2011. I have met many new friends and had lots of enjoyable conversations. Thank you for sharing this exceptional year with me. With it all said and done, did I enjoy it? Absolutely!

Happy and Prosperous New Year to All!

Golf Tip

Building an Expert Short GameWith winter golf approaching and the lies around the green get-ting tight, a solid wedge game is paramount. The average golfer tends to struggle to pitch and chip when the fairways are tight or the ground is hard. If you tend to blade, scull or hit your short game shots fat, this is for you. Let’s look at some possible causes of poor shots around the green and then how we get you back on track. If you follow these guidelines you will be able to get the ball up and down from anywhere around the green.

Possible Roadblocks1) The Wrong Philosophy - The number one error that golfers make is allowing the lead wrist to break down through impact. This typically starts with a flawed philosophy of how the ball gets into the air. If you allow the club head to out race the handle, you will catch the ball on the upswing and blade it or hit behind it. Stop trying to help the ball into the air and let the club work the way it’s built.2) Another misconception is that your body shouldn’t move during pitching swings. If the body doesn’t rotate, the club will out race the rotation of the body and will arrive at impact improperly.

Keys to a Sound Short Game1) The RIGHT PHILOSOPHY – In order to hit solid short game shots, the club shaft must lean towards the target at impact. This is how the club is built. The lead wrist should be flat and the club head will be moving downward into the ball. This is how you put backspin on the ball which is a question that I am frequently asked.2) Rotation of The Body Is Crucial – On the forward swing, the left hip, shoulders and chest must continue to rotate to-ward the target. This will allow you to maintain a flat lead wrist throughout as we discussed earlier.

Symmetry is the Key to Distance ControlShort game shots are nothing more than smaller versions of your full swing. Once you are able to hit your wedges more solid, now its time for distance control. Controlling distance is simply creating the proper length swing that matches the yardage that you want to carry. The backswing length and the forward swing follow through should match. For example: If your lead arm swings parallel to the ground in the backswing, your trail arm should finish parallel to the ground in the follow through.

StrategySometimes the hardest part about the short game is making the correct decision on what type of shot to play. My philosophy is to play the lowest shot allowable for the shot at hand. There are three types of shots (high, medium and low). The amount of green that you have to work with determines the height of the shot you will play. The more green, the lower the shot. The less

green available, the higher the shot.

The 2 VariablesOnce you have your shot planned, match your set-up to the picture that you have in your minds eye. The two variables that make up the set-up are 1) club selection and 2) ball placement. You can pitch with anything from a pitching wedge to a high lofted sand wedge. The ball position is crit-ical to controlling the trajectory and roll of your shots. The closer to your rear foot that you place the ball (Subtracting Loft), the lower the shot will fly. The closer that you place the ball towards your front foot (Adding Loft), the higher your shots will fly.

Short Game Practice1) Mechanical Practice – Working on your mechanics to improve your consistency of contact is the first goal. If you can’t create a solid strike then you can’t effectively work on distance control. When working on mechanics I suggest you set up a station which includes: sticks on the ground for alignment and a stick in the ground behind you for plane work.2) The Median Drill For Measurement – Once your tech-nique improves, this is how you can monitor your progress. Hit eleven shots to a flag. Remove the closest five balls. The “sixth” closest ball is your median or average distance to the flag. You can use this for any short game shot to measure your progress.3) Practice for Play – Simulate the pressure that you en-counter as you play on the course. Take 5 balls and hit your shots to the flag. Putt them in to see how many you can get “up and down”.

64% of all of your shots that you play during a round of golf are within 100 yards. Prioritize your practice accordingly. Improve you mechanics. Create consistent contact. Measure your progress. Follow this blueprint and you too can have a world class short game.

See you on the lesson tee or better yet, the 37th hole or put-ting green.

Carmel Golf

Carmel Senior Golf Association (CSGA) - OMEGACSGA is a group of seniors 55 and older who like to compete in match play events.

Carmel completed the 2011 season with 8 wins and 2 losses, qualifying as one of thefour teams in divisional playoffs. Carmel won matches against Cedarwood and

Cowans Ford to be crowned Omega champions. This year Omega will have 16 teamsadding Cabarrus CC to make up four divisions. The season starts in April with

10 matches (5 home and 5 away) ends in September with playoffs in October. All home matches are on Thursday with away matches on Wednesday and Thursday.

As in previous years there will be qualifying dogfights with both team and individual

formats. An Omega "trial" change for this coming year will be two man match play vsthe traditional one man match play that currently exsists under Omega by-laws. The

Omega Council believes this will be more enjoyable, less stressful, and potentiallyreduce time required to play a roud of golf.

Annual dues are $75 (no change) covering prepaid lunches for Carmel members and

their guests on the day of competition. Away matches the host club will pay for lunchand you pay cart fee only - no greens fee. There is an All Club Tournament for those

that qualify at the end of the year with lunch and prizes. Carmel also has an end of theyear dogfight final "play with the pro" with lunch and prizes.

Sign up in the men's locker room at the CSGA information station.

If you want additional information contact Dan Isaacs in the golf shop or Rich Carbonara at e-mail

Dear Members:

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s almost time for you to hit the courts – renova-tion of the Tennis Center is very close to being complete. Construction has gone better than expected, and we’re about to enter an exciting new era in Carmel Tennis.

First I’d like to welcome our new Tennis Director, Katie Carpenter, who is joining us on January

9. In preparation for her start, Katie has been involved at Carmel the past few months becoming familiar with facilities, staff, committee members and many members. One of Katie’s first responsibilities will be to recruit for two other tennis po-sitions – Head Pro and Assistant Pro. They will support Katie in leading our teaching programs, juniors programs, clinics and all activities. We will continue to keep you apprised of our efforts on this front.

In other exciting news - construction of the new Tennis Cen-ter is scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of February. Further, we’re incredibly pleased to report that the project is currently below budget. One note on the comple-tion date – depending on weather conditions in February, the top coating and color on the hard courts may require to be fully completed in March or April, as applying these finishing layers requires temperatures above certain daily averages. We will update you on our progress.

Regarding the design of the new facility, an important com-ponent the Tennis Center designer focused on was taking advantage of our previously under-utilized lower level, build-ing an integrated tennis complex that is as comprehensive and service-friendly as the one recently created for golf. The lower level court access takes advantage of the proximity to locker rooms, shaded areas and fans, and offers an excellent view of the courts. It is a wonderful extension of the new courts and courtside amenities, and will provide excellent ac-cess to the playing area. With this new addition, we want to encourage all members and guests to arrive for play by enter-ing through the Tennis Pro Shop. This will allow our tennis staff to greet and sign you in, share tennis-related news and - in general - provide the concierge-type service similar to that which is currently in place for golf. As we take Carmel’s Tennis Program to the next level, we want to ensure that the experiences of you and your guests are first-rate and we feel this new integrated approach will facilitate doing just that.

Given this, we’re thrilled to report that the design is shap-ing up to be even better than the pictures and descriptions depicted during the planning phase. All courtside furnishings are on order and will aesthetically match the décor and fur-niture found at the pool and on the golf courses. We’re also taking this opportunity to freshen the existing tennis interior areas, such as the locker rooms and the shop.

We’d also like to remind all members about the convenient and efficient online reservation system. As you know, it pro-vides a multitude of functions, including court sign-up and the ability to see who else might be playing, registering for lessons, and learning about club events and additional hap-penings with our Tennis Program. So please take advantage of this resource on the club website and via the newly-released mobile browser which will also provide you with full access to our online system.

Carmel’s Tennis Committee deserves much appreciation for their guidance during this process; special thanks to David Smith and Jody Cook, who spent countless hours research-ing standards and reviewing specifications to insure that our new facility exceeded the expectations of our tennis playing membership. We hope – with the hiring of the new Tennis Director and the incredible updates to the tennis facilities, we’ll continue Carmel’s tradition of both excellence and in-novation, as we seek to elevate our already exceptional tennis program.

In closing, I’d like to note that Katie and the tennis staff are in the process of preparing a great calendar of events to unveil at the start of tennis season, which will officially begin with a Grand Opening party in March, so watch for details. Tennis has always been a wonderful opportunity to “bring mem-bers and families together” at Carmel, to quote Committee Chairman Rick Menze. We expect our renovated facility and elevated programming to help expand your opportunities to enjoy playing and socializing around tennis.

We’re looking forward to getting everyone back on the courts at Carmel this spring and hope you will all be part of this exciting new time for the Carmel Tennis Program.

GM Message

A new Tennis Center and a new Tennis Director make for an exciting time at Car-mel. Katie Carpenter will be joining us as our Tennis Director on Monday, Janu-ary 9th, 2012. Katie comes to us with twenty plus years of tennis experience from a platinum club, North Ridge, in Raleigh, North Carolina. As the Head Tennis Pro-fessional there she was responsible for all aspects of the program. This includes all adult activities, 29 men’s and women’s teams, organization of all ladies and men’s team practices, adult mixers and socials, as well as planning and execution of all inner club tournaments.

In addition, Katie has been a college tennis coach and is experienced at teaching all levels of tennis. As a player she was a scholar athlete at NCSU and was the head coach of Peace College’s women’s team. Katie’s view of tennis is as follows: “I truly believe that tennis is a sport of a lifetime. It allows people of all ages and all abilities to come together to play and have a great time. Tennis also mimics life. While teach-ing life lessons in a controlled environment any hour can be your finest.”

Please join us in welcoming Katie to Carmel and stop by the Pro Shop to introduce yourself and spend a few minutes with her.

2012 Can Be Your Healthiest Year Ever. Let’s Do This Together!

Forget the New Year’s Resolutions; the path to a healthier lifestyle begins one little healthy habit at a time. Welcome 2012 with a Healthy Lifestyle Change: Each month this year we will focus on one healthy practice that you may already be doing. There's always room to add just one more! Add a new healthy habit each month and accumulate a healthier you by year-end. Stay tuned for the challenge of the month.

January: Get Moving!!! Burn off the past two months of holiday party calories. Increase the amount of aerobic exercise you do. Januarys, Healthy Habit is increasing your aerobic exercise; we are challenging you to start doing thirty minutes of cardiovascular exercise five to six days a week. Split your workouts in half if it’s easier. Performing two smaller work-outs that add up to your usual workout for example, two 15-minute routines instead of one 30-minute session still burns the same amount of calories, plus it temporarily revs your metabolism twice instead of once, so your body burns more calories after your workout.

February: Keep an Exercise Journal. Writing down what you eat and how much you exercise will provide a reality check on how many calories you are consuming and burning; this will help you focus your workouts in the future. The best way to track your progress is to write each of your workouts down in an exercise journal. Chart every exercise, set, rep, type and duration of cardio, and the date. Your exercise journal can be anything from a notepad, to a piece of computer paper, to a chart you made on the computer. By keeping a journal you have something can go back in time and see exactly how you have been progressing over the past couple weeks, months, and even years. The people who don't keep a journal never know exactly how they are progressing because they have no way of measuring what they accomplished in the past. The time spent writing everything in the journal is well worth the knowledge and progression you will see down the road.
