From the Pastor’s Desk XXII SUNDAY OF O.T. After having meditated the chap. 6 of St. John, Jesus "the bread of life", we return to the Gospel of St. Mark and begin reading the illuminating letter of Saint James, which reminds us: "Pure and irreproachable religion before God, the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their tribulation and remain uncontaminated from the world". These words of the Apostle Jaimes, come to us, while the vacation period is over for many

people this weekend of "Labor Day" and many will return to the usual activities. These words, in a way, introduce us to the Gospel of this Sunday. Jesus is still in Galilee, in an area far from the capital and the center of religion. Some scribes and Pharisees came from Jerusalem to argue with him, test him and accuse him. The Pharisees see that the disciples of Jesus do not observe the practices of purification before eating, therefore they ask the teacher: "Why do not your disciples live according to the tradition of our ancestors, but eat with impure hands"? Jesus answers them with some words of the prophet Isaiah that illuminate his message and his action very well. These words with which Jesus fully identifies Himself, we must listen to with attention, because they touch something very fundamental of our religion. According to the prophet, this is the God’s complaint: "these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me". This is always the risk of every religion: to worship God with the lips, repeating formulas, reciting psalms, praying rosaries, pronouncing beautiful words, while their heart "is far from God".

Let's not forget all our practices and prayers have to take us to the heart of God. The worship that pleases God arises from the heart, from the interior adhesion, from that intimate center of the person from which our decisions and projects are born. Jesus reminds us impurity is not in things, but in the heart of the person: "from the heart of men come the evil intentions: fornications, robberies, murders, adulteries, greed, evil, fraud, debauchery, envy, insult, insolence, senselessness".

In this way Jesus clarifies that evil does not arise by chance, but has its roots in the heart. We, men and women, are responsible for "the evils" of this world; this should awake our true conscience and social sinfulness, to help alleviate the injustice in our world. We know, the place to fight against evil starts in the heart. It is in the heart, where we must always plant the good seed of we learn in the Gospel, and lead us to bear the fruits that Jesus hopes from us: solidarity, friendship, patience, humility, piety, mercy, forgiveness and love.

In this weekend of Labor Day, while we thank the Lord for the gift of work we enjoy, we pray for those who need a job and, a more just and well remunerated one. Let us remember that it is through our daily activities and work that we sanctify our day and collaborate in the construction of a better world that we wish for all more just, dignified and humane.

HAPPY LABOR DAY. BLESSINGS TO ALL!

Fr.
