A car accident that claimed the life of a male infant tookplace on the 8 February on the R501/P111.A grey Colt bakkie lying upside-down on its roof was

the scene on Sunday, which involved two other cars. Sixpeople injured in the accident, and five of whom weretransported to the hospital by the Maponya AmbulanceServices and ER24 rescue services.

1499 Hlobo Street in Wedela, wasfound in her house on 30 January.The woman’s body was discover-

ed by her sonwho alerted the policeabout the incident. Shewas lying onthe kitchen around 09:00 on a Fri-daymorning. A post-mortem is stillbeing conducted to discover whatled to the woman’s death. A case ofmurder has been opened and in-vestigations are still in process.

On Monday, residents of Khutsong Ex-tension 3, which has for weeks beenthe location of various bad sewage lea-kages, started protesting over theseproblems.

Residents started to block off themain tar access route to Extension 3with rocks, stones and other materi-als. Tyres were also set alight in someplaces.

In several places in Extension 3, hu-ge streams of sewage were flowing intostreets. In some places sewage was le-aking from manhole after manhole. Somuch of the foul waste, which in someplaces had turned green, filled streetsand yards that people had to stack sto-nes in the sewage to be able to get toand from their houses.

A foul smell hung in the air when theHerald’s journalist walked throughExtension 3 with residents.

“We are tired. We told the municipa-lity what the problems are and we cal-led them to come and help us, but theydidn’t come. They don’t care about us.Extension 3 is ruined by the sewage,”one of the upset residents, Pretty Dla-mini, told the Herald.

“They say we like striking, but it isnot the case. We are doing it is a lastresort. We want to be heard and wewant to be helped. The municipalitywants us to pay for services, but theyare not delivering services to us,” ano-ther resident, Patience Botha, lamen-ted.

“We are upset about the-se stinking drains as theyare stinking and have beenleaking for weeks. It is notright. More and more chil-dren are getting sick. Themunicipality doesn’t careabout us,” Sixty-four-year-old pensioner, Anna Dubetold the Herald.

The newspaper heardthat municipal plumbersstarted addressing theproblems on Tuesday.

The newspaper had re-ported on the Extension 3leakages for the past threeweeks. Although the muni-cipality at first indicatedthat the sewage leakagesoccurred after contractorsbusy on the road next toHlanganani Primary Schooldamaged a sewerage pipe, they laterindicated that a sinkhole had causedthe problems.

“The sewer problem is as a result ofthe broken and blocked pipeline thatis taking sewer out of Ext 3 to the out-fall sewer going to the Kokosi WWTW.The sewer line collapsed due to theformation of two sinkholes next toeach other. Before re-routing can be done, a specialist con-sultant should assess the sinkholeand determine whether it is safe to

continue with the work in the area orcome up with alternative solutions.The consultants that are usually usedfor the rehabilitation of sinkholes VGIConsult have been requested to do anassessment, but that has not done soyet. There was a shortage of disinfec-tant stock after the festive season, butit has been resolved and chlorine aswell as lime was distributed on Tues-day 17 February 2015 to disinfect theareas,” a municipal spokesperson re-plied to questions about the matter onTuesday.

“A consultant and contractor wereon site this morning to come up with

a plan to reroute the sewer line evenif the sink hole has not been rehabilita-ted yet. Another piece of the line wasfound to be blocked, where the newstorm water channels are being laid bythe roads contractor. Material hasbeen ordered and trenches are beingdug where the pipe will be reroutedfrom one manhole to another, cuttingout the piece of pipe that was affectedby the sinkhole. A combination truckis also on site today to ensure that themanholes are emptied from the built-up sewer. It is expected that work willbe completed within the next twoweeks,” the spokesperson added.

The air and water in the Merafong areaare still being polluted by mines.

According to the well-known envi-ronmentalist, Ms Mariette Liefferinkof the FSE (Federation for a Sustaina-ble Environment), the organisation re-cently decided to make its own plansafter the Department of Water Affairsstopped taking water samples in theWonderfonteinspruit. This river,which also runs past Carletonville andthrough Khutsong, has been pollutedby mines for decades.

The sampling, which had also beentaking place for some time but wasstopped in Ovtober 2013, was done tocheck whether new pollution was ta-king place or whether other disturban-ces might have released toxic substan-ces into the water.

“Because ofthis the FSE paidfor the samplingand analysis oftwo months’ wa-ter samples fromthe Wonderfon-teinspruit. Theaccredited labo-ratory which didthe samplingfound that the wa-ter flowing at thetop of the Won-derfonteinspruitcontained acidmine drainage.Metals pointing tomining pollutionwere also foundin sediments inthe river,” Lieffer-ink told the He-rald during thepast week.

She explainedthat Merafong re-sidents should ta-

ke note of this as the same pollutedwater eventually flows through Mera-fong.

Not onlyis toxic mining dust still blowing fromthe Blyvoor slimes dam, but many tox-ic slimes spills, which have not beenproperly cleaned up, have occurredfrom the mine itself. Blyvoor is alsoprone to other environmental pro-blems.

One of its slimes dams, which asmany others in the area have beenbuilt on dolomite, have caved in at ma-ny places because of dozens of sinkho-les falling in under it. As a result someof the mine tailings have leaked under-ground.

Baie van dié besoedeling klinkbuitendien só gekompliseerd en diebeskrywings daarvan só wetenskap-lik dat min mense mooi verstaan wataan die gang is.

Ongelukkig is dit ook juis dié ‘ge-maklikheid’ wat ‘n maklike uitkom-kans gee vir diegene wat veronder-stel is om aandag aan die problemete gee.

So kort gelede soos 2009 het tweestaatsinstellings, die departementvan waterwese en omgewingsake endie nasionale kernreguleerder, diemynbesoedeling in die Wonderfon-teinspruit só ernstig geag dat ‘nreeks publieke vergaderings gehouis om dit aan te begin spreek.Dié aksie het die belastingbetalerhonderde duisende rande uit die sak

gejaag.Intussen is tenders ter waarde van

honderde miljoene rand ook aan be-sighede toegeken om suur mynwaterelders in Gauteng skoon te maak.

Wat het egter intussen gebeur? Ab-soluut niks.

Nie net word die bo-lope van dieWonderfonteinspruit steeds metsuur mynwater besoedel nie, die de-partement van waterwese het som-mer om een of ander rede besluit omhul dekade-lange werk om besoede-ling deur middel van watermonsterste monitor, te staak.

Intussen word niks sover gedoenom die lugbesoedeling deur ‘n myn-hoop van Blyvooruitzig te keer nie.

Mynbesoedeling lyk op die oog afnie so ernstig soos riool wat in strateafvloei nie.

Aangesien dit egter ook groot ge-sondheidsgevare kan inhou, kan ditegter nie net geïgnoreer word nie.

Indien inwoners aanhou om diebesoedeling gering te ag, sal die staatook om gemaklikheidshalwe nie veeldaaraan doen nie.

Besoedeling het nie verdwyn

Almal wat Jesus leer ken het en daar-om begeer om Hom te volg en te dien,moet bereid wees om sy voorbeeld tevolg.

Jesus het die beeld van ‘n koring-korrel wat in die grond val en “sterwe”gebruik. Die koringkorrel moet ge-plant word en geboorte gee aan ‘nplant met baie koringkorrels.

Jesus het daarmee ‘n sentrale waar-heid uitgespreek, want die woorde“Ek verseker julle” is die weergawevan die Hebreeuse”amen, amen”waarmee Jesus gewoonlik aangeduihet dat ‘n uitspraak baie belangrik is(Joh 12:24). Met dié beeld het Jesusverduidelik dat Hy sou sterwe om ver-lore sondaars te red, maar Hy hetdaarmee ook sy volgelinge opgeroepom sy optrede as voorbeeld na te volg

deur onselfsugtig en onvoorwaardeliklief te hê.

Alle gelowiges wat die Here bo allesliefhet, moet soos koringkorrels “ster-we”. Die Here verwag van ons om die-selfde weg as Hy te bewandel deur onslewe ter wille van Hom prys te gee.

Gelowiges is geroepe om “in hierdiewêreld” ‘n radikaal ander lewenswysena te jaag as wat normaalweg in die“wêreld” gebeur. In plaas daarvan omnet jou eie lewe te beveilig en te verryk,moet jy die Here se voorbeeld navolg,al vra dit groot opofferings.

Die saadkorrel wat nie sterwe nie,bly net een enkele korrel, maar as ditsterf, dra dit baie vrug. Om ‘n getrouedienaar van die Here te wees, moet jyHom in alles eerste stel. Hy moet sen-traal in ons lewe staan. Iemand watselfsugtig sy lewe liefhet, sal dit ver-loor. Letterlik staan daar “hy vernietig

dit”. Die selfsugtige mens wat niksvir ander omgee nie en net aan hom-self dink, is op ‘n verloorpad en saluiteindelik niks oorhou nie (DieBoodskap, Joh 12:25). As jy jou le-we in hierdie wêreld gering ag en be-reid is om dinge wat vir jou kosbaarmag wees, prys te gee, sal jy dit be-hou. Die Boodskap sê treffend datGod sal sorg dat jy geestelik vir al-tyd sal lewe (Joh 12:25).

Om Jesus na te volg, is ‘n volkomeoorgawe aan Hom, selfs al sou dieverlies van die eie lewe op die spelwees. Gelowiges moet in die voet-spore van Jesus volg en daarnastreef om altyd en oral presies tedoen wat Hy sou doen (Joh 12:26en 13:15). Gebed: Help my, o Here,dat almal in my woorde en dade salhoor en sien hoe belangrik en won-derlik U regtig is!

Mensemoet Jesus se voorbeeld volg

Wysneus het weer hierdie afgelopeweek gesien dat van ons inwonersdeur niks afgeskrik kan word nie.

Wysneus kan nog onthou hoe op-gewonde van die inwoners ‘n paarjaar gelede was toe die munisipaliteitdie ingange na ons dorpe begin ver-sier het. ‘n Verskeidenheid beton-balle,- blompotte en allerlei gekleur-de gruis is op plekke neergesit omalles darem mooier te laat lyk vir die-gene wat die dorpe binnekom. Rebecca Mosime (38) also known as“Nono baby” is a visual artist fromKhutsongwho is taking her art to thenext level.She began drawing in high school.

After she had completed her matric,she decided to take her talent moreseriously. She went to Johannes-burg to attend workshops at an artstudio known as Artist Proof Studiothrough which she was introducedto other drawing techniques such asdrawing on metal, silk, boards andwood. Rebecca spent two years intraining at the studio during whichshe met professional artists, someof whom had international exposu-re, such as Kim Berman who was anArt5 lecturer at Wits University. Re-becca also tookpart in a school com-petition at Tsitsiboga Primary in2006 in which she was invited to re-present the school with five otherparticipants. Rebecca was requiredto produce a solo drawing and a col-laboration with the other artists.This led to the school winning se-

cond prize in the competition.Although it hasn’t been easy, Re-

becca has managed to make a livingthrough her art, selling more than40 drawings; and she has also givenaway some to her friends and familymembers. She is very proud of herGod-given talent and credits her latefather who inspired her. Nono feelsthat she inherited her talent fromher father, who was a sign writer.She is amulti-talented person and

a businesswomanwhowould also li-ke to host her own exhibition in thenear future. “I am working on expo-sing myself to the world. I also wantto venture in sculpturing, bead-ma-king, even animation,” Nono told thenewspaper. Last week several municipal council-lorsof the rulingpartyweremoved fromtheir positions.On Wednesday, 15 February, during

a special council meeting, the Mayor in-dicated that threemember of herMayo-ral Committee, the Mayoral CommitteeMember (MMC) for Corporate and Sha-red Services, Malixole Kawe and theMMC for Finance, Matsho Mathikge,were removed from these positions.The chairmanof theMunicipal Public

Accounts Committee (MPAC), Jerry Ra-mokgoatedi, was also moved from this

position. Mathikge is replacing him asMPAC Chairperson. During the pasttwo years MPAC has been critical of so-me of the actions in the municipality,pointing to an increasing number of de-viations from supply chain proceduresin themaking of acquisitions in themu-nicipality.During the previous special council

meeting on 28 January a report ofMPAC on the council’s activities in the2014/2015 municipal financial yearmentioned several concerns, such asthat out of total of eight tenders givenout by the municipality in Septemberlast year, only two went to service provi-

ders which are based in Merafong. It al-so noted, amongst other things, that themunicipality was last year frequentlywithdrawingmoney fromits investmentaccount to cover other financial obliga-tions. In August 2014 there was a totalof R171 115 230 in the investment ac-count. This had, however, plummetedto R125 968 134 in September 2014.It also noted that themunicipality’s pro-jected incomewasmuchhigher than themoney it did in fact collect.Positive aspects included the spen-

ding on the much-needed repairs andmaintenance. Also, the municipalitywas able to pay all its creditors in June

and August last year and was able to fi-nance its operations at that time.As far as could be determined, two

otherANCcouncillors,D.V.Tabane andW.T. Mosiane, have been chosen to fillthe vacant positions on the MayoralCommittee.“From time to time political parties

redeploy their members. This is donebasedon theperformanceof theirmem-bers or on internal political party needsor challenges.Whereapoliticalparty re-deploys its members such redeploy-mentmust be ratified by a formalCoun-cil Meeting,” the municipality repondedto questions about thematter lastweek.
