P&C News

Not long till the centenary celebrations. Make sure you book for the Celebration

dinner and entertainment! Will be lots of fun!

Second Hand Uniform Stall – THIS WEEK Friday 25 May

We will be running a second-hand uniform stall on Friday 25 May from 8:30-9:30. If you have any old school uniforms still in good condition that the kids have outgrown, please donate

them to the school office or give them to us on the day. All proceeds go to the school.

Mothers Matter Breakfast & Gift Stall A HUGE thank you to the amazing parents and teachers who helped with the Mothers Matter Breakfast and gift stall

last week – HOWEVER we really didn’t have enough parent volunteers to cook and serve the 400 breakfasts. Several

mothers that were helping didn’t get to spend any time with their children for the special event, which was a real

shame.

This concern was raised and discussed at the P&C meeting this week and has been agreed that going forward if we

don’t get enough volunteers for an event we will have to look at cancelling, which we really don’t want to do. One of

the best parts of the Fundraising Committee, and the various fundraising events, is the opportunity to

meet new people and socialise at all stages of planning and implementation. We work hard putting these

events together but we also have a lot of fun!

So please, even if you’ve never volunteered before, consider lending a hand so we can keep the events going. Remember that many hands make light work!!

Centenary Celebration P&C Food Stall – Saturday 23rd June On the day of the Centenary 23 June 2018 the P&C will be running a Devonshire

Tea and Gelato stall. We will need volunteers to assist on the day. A note will be

going home this week, so people can nominate the time slot they would prefer, and

we will also run a poll on Facebook.

Please consider sparing an hour of your time. This is such a special event and we

want to do our bit to make the day a success and show-off our wonderful school to the wider community.

Fundraising Meeting – Friday 1 JUNE 1:00 – 3:00pm Staff Room For those who are interested, it would be great to get together and discuss what fundraising/community events we'd

like to run in the 2nd half of the year. We will be meeting on Friday 1st June from 1-3pm in the staff room.

Next P&C Meeting – TUESDAY 13 JUNE (Term 2 Week 7) 7:00pm We had a very interesting and enthusiastic presentation about the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program last

meeting from Ms Smith and Ms Boesen which was fantastic to hear and ask questions about.

We are aiming to have regular presentations on school programs and have decided to change the timing of P&C

meetings to start at 7:00pm for a 30min presentation with the meeting proper following directly afterwards.

P&C meetings occur twice a term on the Tuesday of Week 3 and Week 7, at 7:00pm in the staffroom.

We would love to hear from you, if you have any suggestions for presentations topics from staff about school

programs and activities at the P&C meetings. Please contact the P&C at [email protected] or via Facebook

as we’d love your input on what YOU would like to hear about in future meetings.

Don’t forget to download the SkoolBag App to stay up to date with all the things going on at Carlton Public.

Indonesian news from Mr Suter Throughout Term 2, students of Indonesian will be learning about a wide variety of animals, including those endemic to the Malay Archipelago (the large cluster of landmasses that lies north of Australia and comprises the majority of south-east Asia and part of Oceania) as well as native Australian animals, common household pets and farm animals. In addition to this, each class will explore the fascinating culture and rich history of Indonesia through traditional dance, song and art. Rangda and Barong masks As part of our creative art ventures this term, a group of students from years 4, 5 and 6 will be creating a range of traditional masks that have been linked to Indonesian mythology for a very long time. Two styles of mask that the students will create are the Rangda and Barong masks. With Rangda being a mythological figure known as 'the demon queen' or goddess of the underworld and Barong being the king of spirits, symbolising a pure and 'good' character, the juxtaposition of these two masks in celebration and ceremony is used to represent the eternal battle between good and evil. These masks are often brightly coloured with exaggerated, intimidating features and intricate patterns. We look forward to presenting the finished product to all of you when they are displayed at the school art exhibition in the near future. Below are some examples of the style of masks that we will be making. Although they are usually carved out of wood, we have opted to use clay as a more suitable medium. Barong mask Rangda mask

Festival of Instrumental Music at the Opera House

On Monday 21st May, five of us travelled to the Opera House for the Festival of Instrumental Music Banksia Concert.

The students who travelled to the Opera House included Isabel D, Ashwini B, Malaika P, Maxim H and I ( Nika P). At

ten in the morning, we walked to Carlton Station with Miss Stergiou and caught a train to Circular Quay. Before the

actual concert, we had a rehearsal for 3 hours (with a break halfway through). Our conductor was Susan Sukkar.

After the rehearsal ended, we could do anything we wanted until 6:30pm, when our concert started. We found our

way through the crowd of people and took our seats in the concert hall. We weren’t the only ones performing

though; we saw a variety of choirs, string ensembles and percussionists. We enjoyed watching their performances.

We played three pieces; Different Worlds, Handel Highlights and Norwegian Dance. Through the concert, we loved to

watch all the different lighting colours and looking at the spotlights. The concert was a really fun experience. The

concert finished at 9:30pm and our parents took us back home by train. By the time we got home, we were really

tired and went straight to bed. The Festival of Music was a really enjoyable event.

Thanks to Miss Stergiou for all your hard work getting us ready.

CPS LIBRARY NEWS

This week in CPS Library we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime with all K-2 classes. All of our classes really

enjoyed this fantastic picture book called Hickory Dickory Dash .

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to

read and enjoy books.

Now in its 18th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and

literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas

of the National Curriculum.

NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in

libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the

country. NSS2018's book is Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson, illustrated by Laura Wood and published by

Scholastic.

Also we were thrilled that this week, a Stage One class won the Library Gold Trophy for 100% borrowing. .

(Kindergarten classes hold the record so far in 2018.)

1Green are the first Stage

One class to win the trophy

this year. Congratulations 1-

Green, Mrs Kozanitis and

wonderful families in 1-
