I feel very honored to have beennamed the new dean of the CarlsonSchool. Ours is such a terrific institu-tion, with gifted faculty, amazingstudents and a committed staff. We asa school should look to the futurewith great anticipation.

I inherit a school that has so muchgoing for it – a beautiful, state-of-theart facility that is the envy of mostbusiness schools; a top faculty, notednationally for its teaching andresearch; and a curriculum that tiesgreat teaching with real professionalopportunities to give our students thekind of meaningful education theywant and that companies need. Weare positioned to become one of thepremier business schools in the world.

Strong collaboration with alumni andother friends in the business commu-nity has made our successes possible.Their support means our faculty canundertake meaningful research theycan bring into the classroom. Andthanks to the dedication and commit-ment of our business community, ourstudents actively participate in career-enhancing, professional experiences.

My sights are set on gaining areputation as a truly national andinternational destination for thedevelopment of management knowl-edge and lifelong managementeducation. To get there, I will enhanceand expand our business partnershipsbeyond Minnesota; by partneringwith national and internationalleaders, our students will havebroader opportunities for hands-oneducational experiences. Increasedinvolvement of business leaders willensure that our graduates will notonly enter their careers of choice, butalso with their employers of choice,whether local, national or interna-tional. Our alumni can play a keyrole in this area.

I believe the Carlson School’s corepursuits—academic research, attract-ing the best and the brightest studentsand faculty, and providing meaning-ful education resulting in greatcareers—will allow us to best serveour students, and businesses andacademic institutions around theworld. We will continue to focus ourstrategies in these areas.

We will assemble our excellentprograms into a comprehensive anddistinct menu that attracts students,managers and recruiters from all overthe country and the world. We havealready begun to enhance our full-time MBA program, and we arerefining the concept of “enterprises”in new business development,finance and technology solutions asan educational vehicle that can trulybridge the gap between theory andpractice. These student-managedbusinesses offer students the opportu-nity to develop the kind of hands-on

leadership and communication skillsthat will distinguish them amongtheir peers.

Competition is fierce for our under-graduate business program—thetypical Carlson School freshman is inthe top 8 percent of his or her highschool class. That means many well-qualified Minnesota kids who wantto get into the program can’t. Ourchallenge is to expand access to thisprogram, which is ranked 14thnationally. One of my priorities is tofind the space and resources toexpand our faculty and this programso we can retain the talent that all toooften leaves the region for otherbusiness schools.

There is tremendous pressure onbusiness schools today. Those of usinvolved in business education aretoo intimately aware of the battle forrankings and the competition for topstudents and faculty. Our alumniknow the reputation of a businessschool often rides on its MBA pro-gram. The Carlson School is a leadingacademic business school, and weneed to make our mark nationallywith our MBA program and attractmore non-Minnesota students.

I will work to ensure that the CarlsonSchool continues to help keepMinnesota strong, but at the sametime reach out for greater globalpresence. I know we will succeedbecause of the core strengths embed-ded within the school and thevaluable relationships we haveforged. With alumni support, we willcontinue to provide tomorrow’sbusiness leaders in Minnesota andthroughout the world.

QualityThe Push for

American corporations love to banter about their devotion to quality. Ford

Motor Company for years employed the slogan “quality is job one” to hammer

home the message it cared about producing great automobiles. Levi’s once had

the clever tag line “quality never goes out of style” and Ames Rubber chimes to

customers that it offers “excellence through total quality.” Nearly every business

touts a commitment to quality, and the press frequently lionizes such powerful

quality proponents as General Electric’s Jack Welch and Motorola’s Bob Galvin.

Average consumers definequality as something thatworks for them over a period

of time, doing what they want it to dotime and again. They may not carehow the watchmaker or automaker orclothing manufacturer created aquality product; they only care that itworks and that it lasts. And manytimes consumers will pay more forperceived value, be it for a Nikon or aMercedes Benz.

Business understands the equation,even if the quality they offer on someof their products will not allow themto charge any more than competitors.Within business, quality is less aslogan and is more about studyingprocesses, product design, customersatisfaction and getting everyone inan office or plant excited aboutmaking improvements. The focus oncontinuous improvement by Ameri-can business has led to a massivequality movement partly credited forhuge productivity gains over the pastdecade.

“Quality is extremely important,more so than ever before,” says LisaPeterson-Nelson, chief of quality andprocess engineering at Data Recogni-tion Corporation and a member of aCarlson School executive forum onquality. “We run into it every day,whether it’s hiring a landscape

company or buying a personalcomputer—quality has an element ineverything we see and do. Customerexpectations are higher than everbefore. They want things done rightthe first time, and quickly, and if youdon’t meet their expectations they’llgo elsewhere.”

Quality programs could be found inAmerican business for much of thelast century. Among the 20th centuryleaders in quality is Dr. Joseph Juran,a 1924 University of Minnesotagraduate whose 1,500-page “JuranHandbook for Quality Control” hasbeen published regularly every 10years and offers painstakingly de-tailed advice on nearly every aspect ofquality improvement. The qualityguru donated his foundation to theCarlson School in 1997, allowing forthe renaming and national expansionof what is now known as the JuranCenter for Leadership in Quality.

If Juran got the ball moving inquality, W. Edwards Deming kept itrolling from the 1950s to the 1980s,when he received credit for inspiringthe transformation of Japan’s fledg-ling post-war economy into a dy-namic global power. In 1987, theUnited States government becameinvolved in promoting quality bycreating the Malcolm BaldridgeNational Quality Award, offered each

year by the U.S. CommerceDepartment’s National Institute ofStandards and Technology.

Adding to quality’s catapultinginternational cache was ISO 9000, aninternational certification programwith standards set and monitored bythe Geneva-based InternationalStandards Organization (ISO). TheISO offers dozens of internationalstandards for everything from manu-facturing to customer satisfaction,continuous improvement, environ-mental regulations and other qualityissues.

Six Sigma

The Motorola-created “Six Sigma”quality system gained perhaps themost adherents during the pastdecade. Six Sigma incorporates

Deming’s core strategy of totalquality management (TQM) and

other methodologies into asimpler structure in which

in-house experts knownas green belts, blackbelts and master

black belts propelchange.

Professor John Anderson, chair ofOperations and Management Scienceat the Carlson School, likens thedifference between Six Sigma andother quality systems to the waypeople react to the architecture ofbuildings. Cathedrals can use thesame materials but arouse differentsensations in their visitors, just as SixSigma has a different effect from ISO9000, for example, even though theyhave many of the same attributes.

“These initiatives use the sameelements of theory as building blocksthat, when put together, create a new

way of seeing and a whole differ-ent feeling,” Anderson says.

The other difference is that Six Sigmaintroduces new players into thecontinuous improvement process.Previously, executives and managerswere expected to lead the charge.Under Six Sigma, a specially trainedcadre of “black belts” analyze qualityproblems and provide strategies forimprovement. Selected for theirtalent, skills and ambition, blackbelts receive several weeks of trainingbefore being placed in the field, wherethey work with different departmentson a rotating basis and play ideas offemployees and one another.

Scott Martens, director of Six SigmaQuality & Performance Measurementat American Express Financial Advi-sors (AEFA) and an instructor at theCarlson School, calls Six Sigma more“an evolution than a revolution.” Ithinges on three general principles: ametric specifying a maximum failurerate, a methodology for improve-ment, and a philosophy of strivingfor perfection.

American Express do handlingaddress changes? If it gets one in fivewrong, can that be improved? Howoften do call centers get wrong thenumber of securities a customerwants to buy or sell? Every Six Sigmaproject is data, says Martens, leadingto his department’s slogan: “In Godwe trust; all others must bring data.”

Former General Electric ChairmanJack Welch, one of the champions ofquality in the 1990s, wove Six Sigmainto every component of the enor-mous company while vocally cham-pioning the system to other businessleaders. While Six Sigma is oftenapplied to manufacturing andservices, at GE it also has under-pinned several e-commerce projects.Lev Buslovich, ’98 MBA, fleet man-agement solutions manager at GECapital Fleet Services in Eden Prairie,Minnesota, says Six Sigma helped hisdivision complete two Web-basedprojects that shortened from days tominutes the time it took to orderautomobiles and obtain creditinformation and quotes. Six Sigmaoffered “the steps, processes andanalysis to provide us with a moremethodological approach to imple-

menting these systems,” Buslovichsays. “In one instance we consideredcreating a cross-functional team foran aspect of the project, but by goingthrough the Six Sigma process wedecided against it. The data told us it

was better to consolidate decisionmaking into one department.”

GE Capital Fleet enjoyed so muchsuccess that it went global with SixSigma. Sukyul Suh, ’00 MBA, a SixSigma black belt in GE Capital Fleet’sMinneapolis office, spent part of lastyear in Melbourne introducing a newe-business process managementsystem and a new computer operatingsystem for the company’s Australianvehicle leasing operation. Suh usedSix Sigma methods and metrics toguide the Melbourne office throughwhat became a dramatic change.

Other global companies are im-mersed in their own Six Sigma efforts.Charles Donly, ’02 CEMBA, is one of35 Six Sigma black belts at SeagateTechnology’s Minnesota operations,and has worked on a number ofquality projects during the past threeyears. His projects resulted in thedoubled efficiency of a machine inone of the company’s “clean rooms”and in the creation of a worldwideinternal communications structurefor disk drive production that speedslearning and, ultimately, efficiency.

Selecting what to improve is a keyelement of Six Sigma. “Qualityinitiatives are a great idea, but thequestion is on which processes doyou focus first?” says Donly. “We haveto focus on what gives us the biggest

strategic impact, which is usuallymeasured at the bottom line.”Clearly, Seagate is choosing theappropriate focus because, as Donlynotes, since 1998 the Six Sigmaprogram has saved the companyhundreds of millions of dollars.

Still, quality is not simply aboutmoney, says Donly. “Quality is anecessary element for every companyin this industry. Quality may or maynot gain a price premium over thecompetition, but without a qualityproduct we won’t play in the harddisk (drive) industry.”

Other Quality Efforts

Not all quality programscarry the SixSigma moni-

ker. FrederickCoyne, quality

Services ConsumerFulfillment divi-

sion, uses ISO 9000as “our organized

approach” to quality.The company handles

product rebates andfulfillment for several

corporations, amongthem General Mills, Kraft

and Walgreen’s Drug Stores.“We had such an excellent

experience in achieving ISO9000 that we’re true believers

now,” says Coyne, who serves asan undergraduate mentor at theCarlson School.

ISO 9000 is strongly associated withmanufacturing, but it also applieswell to service and fulfillmentcompanies such as Gage. Coyne saysISO 9000 certification offers signifi-cant quality improvement and acrucial marketing advantage whencompeting against other firms,especially those that are not certified.Certification also led to increased

pride in workmanship amongemployees, who knew the processrequired a cultural change andeveryone’s involvement, and whoaccepted the change “much morequickly than we anticipated,” he says.

To Coyne’s surprise, the ISO designa-tion advertised on the exterior of eachof Gage’s six plants and offices“meant more to people inside thebuilding than outside it.” The initia-tive has improved internal andcustomer satisfaction measures inareas such as error reduction andorder fulfillment more than 50 percent.

Quality efforts are not always as wellplanned as Six Sigma or ISO 9000.Tough economic circumstances cansometimes force quality efforts onbusinesses, says Suzanne Holter, ’00MBA, a consultant with ArthurAndersen LLP and the former associ-ate program director of the CarlsonSchool’s Juran Center. Such unplannedefforts occur when managers andexecutives, forced to streamline theirdivisions and downsize employees,study data and begin “managing byfact, rather than intuition,” says Holter.

In essence, the cruel reality ofdownsizing forces a company toanalyze how it could handle businessprocesses more efficiently and withfewer people. No one calls rightsizinginitiatives “quality” programs, Holtersays, but they use data and inputfrom employees to make importantchanges. “They may not even becognizant these tools are usually partof quality initiatives, but they’re usingthem effectively for the same pur-pose,” adds Holter.

The health care industry has under-taken quality initiatives for years toimprove care and administration.Ridgeview Medical Center’s RobWelch, M.D., director of clinicaleffectiveness, uses no particular qualitymodel but rather “a toolbox oftechniques” to produce “incremental

Joseph Juran:Father of Quality

Born in Romania in 1904, Dr. JosephJuran’s family emigrated to Minne-apolis in 1912. Juran advancedquickly through his schooling andgraduated from the University ofMinnesota in 1924 with a degree inelectrical engineering.

Juran’s distinguished career began inthe Inspections Division of WesternElectric’s Hawthorne Works in Chicago,where he worked for 18 years. At thebeginning of World War II, actingunder a presidential directive to clearup the logjam of goods meant forEngland and the Soviet Union, thegovernment asked for Juran’s assistance.Working for the Office of Lend-LeaseAdministration in Washington, D.C.,Juran headed up an early demonstra-tion of the benefits of quality processes.He assembled a team from theinvolved agencies that cut through thelogjam of paperwork and sped theflow of supplies to America’s allies.

In 1945, Juran left Washington, D.C.to devote the rest of his life to qualitymanagement. He was soon in highdemand around the world as alecturer and consultant. Juran’s work—beginning with 1951’s “Quality ControlHandbook,” his 1954 Japan lectures,

and the 1964 book “ManagerialBreakthrough”—set the stage for broadchanges that occurred in Americanworkplaces and around the world.

“I spent a lot of time in Japan earlyon, studying and participating in theirquality revolution,” said Juran. “At thetime, Japan was known as a producerof junk. An emphasis on quality turnedthat country into a leader in manufac-tured goods.” American companieswere slower to participate in thequality wave. “The United States hada huge pent-up demand and income,”Juran said. “American companies couldsell anything.” It was not until thosecompanies began losing market sharethat quality assumed greater impor-tance in this country, and the UnitedStates has since “made great strides incatching up,” he said.

Quality has become increasinglyascendant in the manufacture anddelivery of goods, a trend that willcontinue in the new century, accordingto Juran. “Quality has worked its wayup to the top levels of an organization— it’s no longer delegated. Businessgoals now include quality standardsand the means to measure them.

“The industrial revolution magnifiedthe scale of quality failures and putthem center stage,” Juran said. “Thinkof Chernobyl, Bhopal or evenFirestone tires. Organizations can’tafford to ignore quality.”

Juran’s work has earned him manyadmirers. In 1992, Juran received theNational Medal of Technology fromPresident George Bush to commemo-rate his lifetime of work in quality andits benefits to American business. Hehas received the Japanese Order of theSacred Treasure, Second Class (thehighest class non-Japanese can receive).And according to Peter Drucker, “What-ever advances American manufacturinghas made in the last 30 to 40 years,we owe to Joe Juran and to hisuntiring, patient, self-effacing work.”

improvements” that reduce errors incare and billing while reducing waste.“We’re changing small, localizedprocesses while periodically reassess-ing the entire system,” he says. “We’renot involved in process redesign orre-engineering, which require adifferent set of skills and tools.”

With that modest goal, the medicalcenter has made great strides decreas-ing both paperwork and billingdelays. Patient care has benefited,too. An extensive examination ofbirthing data involving vacuumextractors, which are used to assistdelivery when the final phase of birthstalls, resulted in improved datacollection, new guidelines andtraining that reduced problemsassociated with the procedure.

At Polaris Industries Inc. a manufac-turer of snowmobiles and otherrecreational vehicles, a push forquality from the shop floor to thesales and service staff propelled costsavings and provided a better experi-ence for customers and dealers alike,says Brad Smith, ’99 MBA, manager ofsales and service quality. Thecompany’s recently created NationalService Center answers questionsfrom dealers who formerly had todeal with as many as seven depart-ments when calling for information.“Dealers now see a single face ofPolaris, as opposed to the many faces

they saw less than a year ago,” saysSmith. “A great byproduct of thisquality effort was a substantialdecrease in overhead costs.”

The Cultural Change

Six Sigma black belts function bestwhen a company embraces quality asa primary goal and employees acceptnew ways to do business. Since blackbelts arrive as outsiders, employeesand managers are often wary of anewcomer who professes to under-stand their needs and plans changesin the near future.

However, employees today are moreaccustomed to an environment ofconstant change and continuousimprovement, says Seagate’s Donly.Once he was established as a blackbelt, employees came by his office tosuggest various quality improvementprojects and ask his assistance. Ifcompanies advertise the results andthank employees for their input,quality will be seen less as a burdenand more as a point of pride, addsCoyne, echoing one of Deming’smain themes of “take pride in yourwork.”

Quality programs are not withoutlimitations. While it’s hard to argueagainst quality, companies still haveto figure whether an investment willhave a return, argues Dan Ruemping,

an evening Carlson MBA student andSix Sigma black belt at Honeywell,Inc.’s building and control division.At other firms, he has worked onquality projects with good results thatdid not add measurably to thebottom line. Sometimes “improve-ments would cost so much it wouldbe cost-prohibitive to introducethem,” Ruemping says.

Suppliers are another potential glitchin any quality program. As theFirestone-Ford tire debacle showed, abad supplier can become a nightmarefor a company. Honeywell and otherlarge companies rely on dozens ofsuppliers who create different parts oftheir products. How hard is it todemand they improve quality? Itdepends, says Ruemping, on whetherthe company accepts outside adviceand believes the threat of its contractbeing pulled is real. Some companieshave told Ruemping their manufac-turing process is proprietary informa-tion.

The supplier-company relationshipdoes not always have to impedequality. Requiring ISO 9000 certifica-tion among suppliers, although not aquality guarantee, enhances anyquality initiatives. Suppliers also asktheir clients for clearer productspecifications, leading Honeywelland other companies to designproducts that can be manufacturedmore easily with quality, in essence,already built-in.

Quality and the Carlson School

The Carlson School is not only anational leader in quality researchand instruction, but also a practitio-ner. John Anderson led the charge in2000 that led to 19 different improve-ments in such diverse areas as classscheduling, parking, dining services,the school’s e-mail system and itsgraduation ceremony. During theprocess, Anderson says his “dooropened and never closed” as depart-

“The Summit” withDr. Joseph M. Juran

The Carlson School is calling togethernational leaders in quality for a first-ever event. “The Summit” with Dr.Joseph M. Juran, will be held at theschool June 25-26. It will includetopics such as Six Sigma, leadershipinitiatives in healthcare and thechallenge of sustaining quality overgenerations.

Featured speakers include Six Sigmaoriginator and former Motorola CEOBob Galvin, 3M chief executive officerJames McNerney, and CarlsonCompanies, Inc. CEO Marilyn CarlsonNelson. Morning sessions willinclude keynote addresses and paneldiscussions. Breakout groups willform around topics such as seniorleadership, strategy, process manage-ment, human resources, informationsystems, and customer focus.

“The conference will investigate howsenior executives can lead a Six Sigmatransformation,” said Jim Buckman,director of the Juran Center forLeadership in Quality at the CarlsonSchool. “Participants will study whatleadership is required for executivesto accomplish the goals of a SixSigma program. Conversely, it willlook at what happens when a CEOwho championed quality leaves—does the new executive continue thequality push or move on? The Juran Center

The quality movement at the CarlsonSchool goes beyond the classroomand into the real world of business(see sidebar on “The Summit”). JimBuckman, co-director of the CarlsonSchool’s Juran Center for Leadershipin Quality, reports faculty andstudents have worked with eightcompanies on quality issues, amongthem the Carlson Companies andLutheran Midelfort Hospital andClinic, a part of Mayo Health System,in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. AtMidelfort, Buckman and his team ofstudents—who were paid $25 anhour—worked directly with hospitalstaff to improve billing and otherissues. The hospital saved more than$80,000 within a year and expects theoverall savings to exceed $750,000.

The Juran Center has been a leader inquality research and teaching nearlysince its inception in 1993. In fact,from 1995 to 2000 the National

Science Foundation gave the CarlsonSchool nearly $2.5 million in grantsfor quality research, almost threetimes as much as its closest competi-tor, the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT). “The grantshelped us look more deeply intoquality issues and to create a commu-nity of scholars who really under-stand the issue,” says Buckman. “Theyhelped us move toward Dr. Juran’sgoal, and ours, of creating thenation’s leading intellectual centerfor quality.”

Maintaining quality as a strength atthe Carlson School and in thebusiness world will be tested in thefuture since business, like culture,runs in cycles.

“There’s a question of sustainabilityof quality in business,” says RogerSchroeder, co-director of the JuranCenter. “Businesses follow fads. We’vestill got a lot of companies andprofessors who say ‘We’re done withthat, let’s move on to something else.’We don’t want that to happen. Wewant this to be an enduring part ofour programs and a distinct focus ofour school.”

Kopp Scholarships Have Ripple Effectfor Students, Families and Community

This year, they brought the scholars to him. Lee Kopp, ’55BSB, Carlson School leader and benefactor, sat back andlistened as the 2001 Kopp Scholars gathered for a celebra-tion at his firm and described what the scholarships hadmeant to them, their families and the community.

“The afternoon when theletter came I immediatelyran into my dad’s roomwhere he was sleepingand gave him the biggesthug, saying, ‘I can affordto go to school nextyear!’” said Kopp ScholarNicole Dupre.

“My father has worked ina factory for 25 years…The Kopp Scholarshipmeant that maybe myfather can take a few daysoff, and I can supportmyself through college.”

This year, Lee and BarbaraKopp provided 30 CarlsonSchool students withscholarships of $1,000 - $1,500 through the Kopp Invest-ment Advisors Emerging Leadership Scholarship Program.The scholarships are based on merit and communityservice, and Kopp Scholars invest up to 70 hours incommunity service, leadership, diversity and professionaldevelopment. Since the program began in 1996, 150undergraduate students at the Carlson School havereceived scholarships.

Lee and Barbara have dedicated themselves to helpingstudents receive an education. Appreciative for the role

education played in their success, they make KoppScholarships possible and contribute to a variety ofeducation and community programs.

“Education is critical to the community and to mankind,”Lee Kopp said when asked about the scholarships. “Theletters from recipients are enduring and emotional andhelp you see that you do change lives in some small way.”

Growing up under difficult circumstances in Minneapolis,Lee hadn’t planned on going to college until his senioryear when teacher Vern Wobig of Patrick Henry HighSchool, also a neighbor, encouraged him. He alsoreceived two $200 scholarships, which provided himwith additional incentive. Four years later, he graduatedwith distinction with a bachelor’s degree in businessadministration.

As he said during the commencement speech he gave tothe Carlson School class of 2000: “Ultimately in life wemust heed the advice of Henry James: ‘Three things inhuman life are important: The first is to be kind, thesecond is to be kind, and the third is to be kind.’”

McNamara Legacy Helps Other Women PursueBusiness Degrees

Doris Erstad McNamara,’28 BBA, was an exceptionas one of the few femalebusiness students of herday. She excelled in manyof the classes traditionallyoccupied by men, includ-ing finance, accountingand management.

“I think my decision to goto business school was themost fortunate decision Iever made,” Doris said.And during her years in business school, she devotedmany of her efforts to helping other women follow in herfootsteps, serving as a leader of the University’s YWCA andfounder of the Women’s Business School Club.

Upon her graduation, Doris became a business and com-munity leader, moving up the ranks at Powers departmentstore in Minneapolis. After her marriage to James McNamarain 1939, she became active in public affairs, serving onthe board of the Women’s Club of Minneapolis and aspresident of the Minneapolis League of Women Voters.

A long-time volunteer in the art department at StanfordUniversity, McNamara provided research funds for thatdepartment and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.She also established fellowships for women businessstudents. “I decided that I would like to help some oftoday’s young women interested in business have the sameopportunities I had for a lively and challenging life,” shesaid. “Funding fellowships seemed an obvious way to start.”

Upon her passing in May 2000, Doris left a gift of nearly$1.3 million to the Carlson School to establish the DorisMcNamara Fellowship Endowment for Women. The giftwill attract top women students to the school’s graduateprograms and help them develop leadership skillsthrough participation in student activities.

“Doris’s gift was an expression of her love for the Univer-sity,” said her brother Woody Erstad.

John and Nancy Lindahl Create Endowed Pro-fessorship for Excellence in Business Education

John and NancyLindahl, passionateUniversity supporters,outdid themselves thisyear with the establish-ment of the John andNancy Lindahl Profes-sorship for Excellencein Business Education.The endowed profes-sorship will attractoutstanding newfaculty to the schooland help junior facultydevelop their careers. Itis part of the couple’soverall gift of $1 million to the University.

The Lindahl’s contributions over the years have been signifi-cant. John, ’68 BSB, counts as chief among his accomplish-ments the leveraging of major financial support fromNorwest Equity, where he works as an investment banker, forstart-up of the school’s New Business Development Enterprise(see page 2). The gift inspired additional financial supportfrom 3M which helped launch the enterprise in September.

Nancy has championed several University causes over theyears, including children’s cancer research and women’sathletics. In 1999, she represented the University aspresident of the National Alumni Association. In Septem-ber, she was recognized with an Outstanding AchievementAward—the highest non-degree award conferred upondistinguished alumni—by the University of Minnesota.

“Nance’s Dad was a professor for 30 years and her motheralso taught there,” said John Lindahl. “My mother was alsoaffiliated with the University. We’re proud of the progressthe school has made over the past 10 years and don’t wantit to lose momentum. The school gets better and betterand we want to be sure it attracts the professors it needs.”

The Lindahl’s gift will go a long way toward ensuring thishappens. Hats off to them once again for their generosityand unwavering support.

Alumni Play a Key Role in Events

Surrounding September 11

The tragic events of lastSeptember 11 had aprofound impact oneveryone at the CarlsonSchool, as they did oneveryone across thecountry. The effect,involvement andresponse varied byindividual, but theincredible impact ofthis event was feltuniversally.

Prominent among theheroes of Sept. 11 wasCarlson School alum-nus Tom Burnett Jr., ’86 BSB. Burnett was one of thepassengers on United Airlines Flight 93, traveling fromNew Jersey to California. The COO of a medical devicecompany, Burnett was returning home to his wife andthree children after a business trip on the East Coast whenthe plane he was on was hijacked.

Burnett was one of the passengers who spoke to familyand friends by phone during the ordeal. With knowledgeof what had happened to the other hijacked planes,Burnett and two other passengers were “determined to dosomething,” as he told his wife Deena in their last conver-sation. It is believed that their efforts caused the plane togo down in a field outside Pittsburgh rather than at itsintended Washington, D.C. target.

“Tom was a guy with high standards and a strong sense ofright and wrong,” said Jeff Swanson, ’85 BSB, a formerclassmate of Burnett’s and member of the Alpha Kappa Psifraternity of which Burnett was president. “That was evidentat one of the first fraternity business meetings Tomattended, just a few weeks after his initiation. A new officerposition was created, and the fraternity president was going

to simply appoint someone. Tom spoke up, saying ‘Wait aminute; I think we need to vote.’ I remember thinking ittook a lot of guts for someone so new to speak up forwhat was right. But that’s the kind of guy Tom was.”

Upon learning Burnett was on Flight 93, Swanson said heknew what took place aboard the plane. “When I heardhow the flight came down and that Tom was on it, Irealized he must have been involved in bringing down theplane before even more people could get hurt,” saidSwanson. “Tom was a man of action and conviction. Justas he’d done at that fraternity meeting and numeroustimes since, I knew Tom would have taken the rightaction. And he did.

“I think we all need to learn from Tom’s actions—in bothhis life and his death—and do what is right. Whatever itmeans to us, we should do something.”

The University of Minnesota has established the Thomas E.Burnett Memorial Fund in Tom’s memory. The fund willbe used to benefit University of Minnesota students whosecharacter and leadership emulates that of Tom Burnett. Burnett made the ultimate sacrifice in fighting terrorism,an effort against which most other efforts pale in com-parison. Many other Carlson School alumni did, however,contribute where they could to the recovery effort. Inaddition to numerous individual gifts, some arranged fordonations from their companies.

Steve Goldberg, ‘75 BSB, donated five percent of three-week’s sales at his five restaurants—one in California,one in Colorado and three in the Twin Cities—to theWorld Trade Center Relief Fund. Goldberg’s $20,000donation was further added upon by many servers inthose restaurants, who donated a percentage of their tipsduring the same period.

At least two alumni answered the call for supplies issuedby the recovery team immediately after September 11. RedWing Shoes, headed up by President Bill Sweasy, ’76 BSB,shipped hundreds of steel-toed boots for recovery work-ers. Bob Kierlin, ’64 MBA and CEO of Fastenal Co., senttools and equipment needed by the rescue teams.

DeceasedCol. (Retired) Paul Edward Arneson,’30 BSB, passed away at age 94 onSeptember 9, 2001. Col. Arneson wasborn in Montevideo, Minnesota. Aftergraduating from college, he enlistedin the United States Army. Col. Arnesonfirst served as an administrator for aCivilian Conservation Corps camp inMinnesota and later as an Armyintelligence officer in London on thestaff of General Dwight D. Eisenhowerduring World War II. Col. Arnesonwas decorated with the Bronze Starand, after World War II, he helped toorganize the CIA. He served the CIAin a civilian capacity until 1966,when he retired to Florida.

Harold L. Holden, ’31 BSB, passedaway September 23, 2001 at age 95.Holden was born and raised in Aitkin,Minnesota. After graduating from theUniversity of Minnesota in 1931, hewent to Connecticut to work forGeneral Electric, where he gainedskills in advertising and sales. Hecame back to Minnesota one yearlater and took over a printing com-pany in serious financial condition.He satisfied the obligations of thecompany in 1940 and it was re-named Holden Printing Company,which now operates in multiple statesand employs more than 900 people.

Charles W. Miller, ’52 Ph.D. and ’50MA, passed away October 24, 2001 atage 93. Miller was the executivemanager of United Grocers ofAppleton, Wisconsin, for eight yearsbefore joining the Navy in 1943.During World War II, he served as anofficer in the Supply Corps and afterthe war attained the rank of captainin the Naval Reserve. Miller waspresident of the Zinke Company,Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and of S.C.Shannon Co. of Appleton, Wisconsin,both wholesale grocery businesses.He taught at Marquette Universityand served as chairman of the
