In an age of fraud, religious, economic

nd political, the Catholic Church showed

    other

day as a pillar of honesty

t was officially announced, through a

ecial commission headed by the Arch

    shop of Manila,

    that

    the rose petal showers

d other extraordinary happenings at the

ipa Carmelite convent were anything but

    Neither God nor H is

    Mother,

om the evidence had anything to do with

e miracle. If so, man obviously was the

behind it. The Church warned against

alse miracles, stood for true faith as

ainst gross superstit ion. True f ai th , one

    say

    brings

    salvation; superstition

    brings

    someone.

Yet the people who flocked to Lipa by the

ousands and contr ibuted to the building

f a church there of magnificent propor

ons and brought the town such prosperity

s it had never known are hardly to be

    amed. The ignorant

    masses

    merely follow

t he i nt el le ct ua l lead of su ch m ind s as

of former Chief Jus tice Manuel Moran.

man who had weighed evidence carefully

or years and based his decisions thereon, he

    ronounced the Lipa phenomenon mira

    So

there was no miracle But tha t an

ouncement does not satisfy the people,

ether they believed or disbelieved. There

re some serious questions to be answered:

here did the petals come from? Was there

me d ev ic e which caused th e showers

    of

etals? Who were the perpetrators if it was

    fraud?

Thousands of Filipinos including the late

rs. Quezon were duped into believing

    this was a heavenly manifestion.

ousand of pesos have been taken from be

ving Filipinos because of the miracle.

ow it is pronounced no miracle at all. The

A few days ago Father urged me to go

to Negros because my poor Auntie, who

reared me, was seriously ill. I took the

plane for Negros and was not able to preach

last Sunday at Martires. However, I let

Brother Claridad take my place. Brother

Rendon is supported by the Guiljungan

    church,

    but

I think he might as well stay

    there only a

    month

    or two as they are

still summing up how will they make both

ends meet. I went there again and encour

aged them to keep Brother Rendon, and I

I told them to build a little parsonage.

I am glad of your policy to have each

worker be supported by the Filipino

Churches. I have contemplated working in

Negros even without the support of any

church there, provided you can help me

    even 70 pesos a month. I will

    try

    to estab

lish churches and let these churches support

me. I think I can even lead other congrega

    tions to support Brother

    Otadoy

    and Broth

er Remo who are commendable preachers.

They are well-trained preachers now. I

have personally directed them and they are

capable. They are also long suffering and

    worried

about how may he send his daughter to

how Brother Lacson has labored in

    th e

Lord's vineyard. He has abandoned his job,

his means of livelihood for the Gospel. We

    have to help him. His

    intention

    is to let

    The

the story of a baby girl who was sold fo

    On

    Nov.

    25-year-old widow from Negros Occidenta

    The agents of the employme

Icompany admitted having taken the bab

    but

    they assured Marcela

    that

    she woul

The following day, Marcela was hire

    as a maidbut

    her child was

    child

had been taken back to the

Furious, Marcela sought the help of he

    with

    Assistant Provincial

    Fiscal

    Goco

    of

    Ca

the agents. At last the agents confessed tha

they had sold the child to a Mr. and Mrs

This incident took place just previous

to the ascension of Christ and during the

forty days after the resurrection when the

Lord was appearing to the disciples.

    Verse 6. The disciples evidently

    think

that the load of the work of the kingdom

is still to be Christ s. Note th e

    us e

    of th e

    pronoun thou.

Verse 8. The Lord puts the emphasis in

the proper place when He tells them: YE

shall be witnesses. The burden of responsi

bility was to be with the disciples. Christ

had done His part in the plan of salvation.

    When

    He

    said on

    the

    cross, I t is finished,

he meant that His labor was completed.

The disciples were to receive power.

They were to do the work. They were to

go to Jerusalem, Judea and the uttermost

parts of the earth. They were to have help,

    but

they themselves were to bear the brunt

    1957

Today we still have Christ's promise

    help

    in

    carding out

    His

    will. There is

most no limit to the possibility of o

achievement if we use the available assi

    use

of God s power. Perhaps this is the e

    planation for our meagre accomplishments

Now is the time to step up the tem

    of

    our

    service. The Philippines are

    bei

    threatened from within and

    without

enemies who would devour her. Communis

    been

    donated by one

    of

    Our

    family prays

    that the

    Lord

    help

    you

    with us

    always. May

    the

    Lord help

    me

    my problems.

    Hoping and waiting for

    are

    still lots of prob

    WHAT

    SHALL

    I GIVE?

    What

    shall

    I give? I asked as I

    stood

    at the gate of life,

    A coin will

    do,

    the crowd replies.

    That's

    all it

    takes to get

    you

    by.

    I

    put

    it there,

    the

    coin so

    small,

    a

    thing

    I'd

    miss.

It opened the gate, but that was all. I

stepped inside but I never saw the child who

    was coldI

    failed

    to touch the ones who

    were down.

    It's a

    cheap

    affair, I

    said

    as

    I turned to

    go,

    but

    an

    Angel stood in

    my

    way.

    Try again,

    he

    said, give more and

    more.

    So

    I gave

    and

    gave and gave again

    the flowers

    sprang

    up and the

    children

    played.

How much? , I asked, and the Angel

said, Itwill be enough when every

    hungry

    child

    IS

    fedwhen every fevered brow is

IS coolwhen every shred of hate is gone

    when love

    dwells

    deep in every

    heart, and

    God,_

    the. Father jreigns supcen^e.'-

    But

    I

    shall die.

    I

    cried,

    if thus I

    give.

    No, the

    Angel

    said, You will live.
