150 years ago, Carl Nielsen, the famous Danish composer, was born. In 2015, we celebrate his anniversary. Born in 1865, Carl Nielsen spent his early years as a farm boy living in Funen. When in 1931 he drew his last breath, he had become an internationally acclaimed artist. His pop-ular and treasured songs and psalms now define “the Danish tone”, and today, symphony orchestras around the world adopt his greatest works as part of their standard repertoire. This recording reflects the diversity of Carl Nielsen’s life and musical work. The reper-toire stretches from the great orchestral works to the charming popular songs - everything arranged for trumpet and organ by Søren Johannsen. Towards the end of his life, Carl Nielsen developed a rather sophisticated musical idiom. In 1931, the year of his death, he composed Commotio, which not only became his greatest organ piece, it is now also the most played piece for that particular instrument in Denmark. Commotio stands in stark contrast to the work of the young composer; Nielsen explores new musical territories and renews the Bach tradition with more modern charac-teristics. The result? A grandiose and intoxicating piece of music which challenges both the organist and the audience. Mathias Hammer
