WelcomeDear Hospice Supporter,

Welcome to the 2019 Spring/Summer edition of Connect. I hope you enjoy catching up with all that has been happening at Hospice over the winter and reading about our plans for the coming months.

Your support has enabled us to provide thousands of hours of specialist hospice care for infants, children and adults, both at our facilities on Somerton Road in North Belfast and at Horizon House in Newtownabbey. Our teams of Community Nurses have also been busy travelling throughout Northern Ireland, visiting patients and their loved ones, delivering palliative care in the comfort of a patient’s home at a time when it is needed most.

To make this care possible, our teams of dedicated fundraisers, volunteers and supporters have also been busy holding events, organising collections and running campaigns to generate much needed funds for Hospice. The 2018 Jingle All The Way campaign at Christmas was a great success and plans are already in place to make it even bigger and better this year. As ever, the annual Lights to Remember service was attended by over 1,200 people, highlighting the importance of taking a moment during Christmas festivities to remember all those we have lost, but are never far from our minds.

As we look forward to brighter evenings and longer days, I hope you will once again get behind NI Hospice and some of our forthcoming activities. Join the 2019 Hospice Walk; take part in the Belfast City Marathon, the Dragon Boat Race or one of our challenge events!

We rely on your support to do what we do best - care for those in need. In the last year, we have worked hard to expand our services to reach ever more people. In adult services, we are now offering Out Patient and wellbeing clinics at our ‘Hospice Hub’ on Somerton Road.

And, as part of our developments at Children’s Hospice, we have secured part-funding to help us open extra bed capacity, allowing families travelling long distances to have extended respite and supported short breaks. With your support, we can continue to deliver this valued specialist care.

On behalf of all those we care for, thank you for supporting Northern Ireland Hospice.

Heather Weir, Chief Executive Officer Northern Ireland Hospice

Children’s HospiceMeet our new Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice Physiotherapists, Tina Fullerton and Gabrielle Hartnup.

Tina (pictured, left) and Gabrielle (right) are both graduates from Ulster University and bring a wealth of experience to Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

Gabrielle previously worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children while Tina worked at both Musgrave Park Hospital and the Ulster Hospital.

Together they care for children in Horizon House such as young Sebastian Magee, from Belfast, who is just three years of age (pictured on page 5 and front cover).

Tina, who also works across our Adult Hospice every week, said: “Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is such as a brilliant facility for the children to attend. I think when people hear the word ‘hospice’ they think ‘end of life’ but a big aspect of the Children’s Hospice is the supported short breaks.

“I love working with the children and, in particular when we are in the therapy pool, their smiles and the enjoyment they get from it makes my job very worthwhile.”

Both Tina and Gabrielle specialise in chest physiotherapy, therapy pool sessions and stretching and mobility.

It costs £220 per day to provide physiotherapy services in Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

Over 330 infants and children are cared for by Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice each year both at Horizon House and in the comfort of their own homes. Your support for Hospice makes all this care possible.

Gabrielle says: “There’s no typical day in Horizon House. I love being around the kids and building up a rapport with them and their parents.

It’s a happy and homely place to work. All of the staff are caring and friendly and a great team to be a part of.”

Adult HospiceMeet Donna Louise Laird, a Hospice Nurse Specialist at Northern Ireland Hospice, who works in the north and west communities in Belfast.Donna Louise Laird was raised in the spectacular surrounds of the Peak District in central England and now finds herself waking each day to the beauty of the Ards Peninsula where she can continue her love of an outdoors lifestyle.

After a fascinating career in specialist palliative care which has taken her across England, to Lahore in Pakistan and on to Northern Ireland, she is about to complete her first year here as a Specialist Community Nurse covering the north and west communities of Belfast.

She is very passionate about people knowing how they can access palliative care and that it is there for everyone.

Donna Louise said: “I love working in the community setting. It’s very varied and dynamic – no two hours, never mind no two days, are the same. It’s a challenging role because you work with a broad number of patients and families.

“A Hospice Nurse Specialist will support a patient from diagnosis and will also offer bereavement support as part of the relationship with the family.

“We care for patients and families at home and support out-patient clinics at the Hospice Hub. In addition to that, there’s administrative office-based work, so it’s quite a diverse role.

“In the patient’s home we will look after their care needs, alongside their families and healthcare professionals, advising on medication, symptom management and complexities. We also provide emotional support and bereavement care.

“A nurse’s contact with a patient and their family could last several months, a year or even longer. At times, you learn all about a patient’s life and it leads to a greater understanding of that person, and of their family. Most often we are their first port of call after diagnosis.”

Donna Louise’s obvious passion for the delivery and the development of palliative care was first formed when she started nursing, working in a leukaemia ward as a student Nurse.

Her chosen area of healthcare would later take her to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Pakistan – the hospital founded by current Pakistan Prime Minister and former cricket star Imran Khan, in memory of his mother.

Putting her passion for Hospice and her love of outdoor pursuits to good use, Donna Louise is set to lead a Specialist Community Nurse team into the annual Hospice Dragon Boat Race fundraiser on the River Lagan on the 1st June. Certainly a different day to her usual work!

Our Community Services teams at Northern Ireland Hospice care for people with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses across Northern

Hospice HubAt Northern Ireland Hospice, we have developed a new model of care called ‘Hospice Hub’ which empowers patients to live well with their condition and to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible.

There are two types of services available at the Hospice Hub:

• Hospice Hub Wellbeing Clinic

• Hospice Hub Outpatient Clinic

Hospice Hub Wellbeing Clinic

The Wellbeing Clinic is a structured six week programme which runs every Tuesday from 10am to 3pm. The aim of the Hospice Hub is to improve a patient’s wellbeing at a time in their life when they’re adjusting to the impact of their illness.

Each Tuesday, there are a number of different sessions available which are run by our multidisciplinary team. Examples of sessions include ‘Wellness Action Planning’, ‘Managing your Medicines’, ‘Breathlessness Management’, ‘Fatigue Management and Energy Conservation’ and much more.

Hospice Hub Outpatient Clinic

The Outpatient Clinic takes place on Wednesday and Thursday each week. It is run by our multidisciplinary team who offer a variety of services, support and information, including medical and nursing support, physiotherapy, occupational and complementary therapy, and emotional support from our Family Support Team.

How to Attend

If you think you may be interested in attending the Hospice Hub, please speak to your current healthcare professional (either in the community or the hospital or to your GP) to arrange for a referral to be made. Once this has been received by our team, we will be in contact to invite you to one of our services.

West Belfast men raise over £20k for Northern Ireland HospiceWest Belfast trio, Gerard Lynas, Ciaran Stow and Chris Campbell, have undertaken yet another major fundraising drive in support of Northern Ireland Hospice.

The dedicated group has been fundraising since 2015, when the new adult Hospice was still in its construction phase. Inspired to raise vital funds, the trio organised various events including two charity boxing shows, Strictly Come Dancing, Take Me Out and a Golf Day.

In October, the tireless fundraisers also spent a gruelling 12 days scaling Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing-mountain.

Chris Campbell said: “We’re overwhelmed by the support of the local community helping us to raise funds for Hospice. Many of our childhood friends who we hadn’t seen in years came in droves to our fundraising events and were very generous and supportive.

“I would like to thank the West Belfast community in particular. To every local business that donated, and to all our family and friends for their continued support, we can’t thank them enough.

When the going got tough at 4am in -10 temperatures on Kilimanjaro, we thought of all the amazing people in our local community who helped us get to the top.

“We would also like to thank the Hospice for their help and support. The whole journey from the idea, to the top of Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro was without doubt an adventure of a lifetime, something we are very proud of.”

Michael Nugent, Regional Fundraiser at Northern Ireland Hospice, added: “It costs over £14m per year to run hospice services. We wouldn’t be able to provide local people with specialist palliative care without the support and goodwill of people like Gerard, Ciaran and Chris. I’m delighted that the trio have also decided to continue fundraising for us and look forward to working with them in 2019.”

Meet Jackie Jackie Cullen is a former English teacher at Mercy College in North Belfast. She began volunteering 15 years ago at the Northern Ireland Hospice Shop on the Antrim Road.

Why did you choose to volunteer at a Northern Ireland Hospice Shop?

“Northern Ireland Hospice was particularly good to my Father and Mother when they were terminally ill and when I retired from teaching, it was my intention to give something back to Hospice.

“My parents benefitted from Hospice at Home care and that is something I will always appreciate.”

What do you enjoy most about volunteering in a Hospice Shop?

“I decided to give time to help the Hospice but instead it has given more back to me. I have got so much enjoyment and friendship from working in the shop. It’s a great way of meeting people, the customers are fantastic, the generosity of the public is amazing, and the support of staff in the Hospice Shop is second to none. I cannot emphasise how much fun it is, I love it.”

What would you say to anyone thinking of volunteering in a Hospice Shop?

“I would encourage anyone to volunteer. I would just say ‘go for it’. It is such a rewarding thing to do. There’s so much joy in the shop, such a bond between staff and customers.

“The customers love looking for a bargain or for something unique and they see it as a ‘win-win’ scenario – they are getting a bargain and their money is going towards the care of terminally ill people in their community.

“I never knew retail was such a complex profession but now I appreciate more what people go through to make it all work, so even in retirement, I am still learning new skills. I could not recommend volunteering enough.”

How can I get involved? For more information on Make a Will Month, and how you can get involved, please call Sharon Gorman on 028 9077 7123 or email [email protected]

What is Make a Will Month? During March this year, 26 local solicitors across Northern Ireland will waive their fees for their standard Will making service and in return clients will be invited to make a discretionary donation to Northern Ireland Hospice. All donations, large or small, will enable us to continue to care for local people.

Why is an up-to-date Will important?Having an up-to-date Will is one of the most important things you can do to protect your family and loved ones and ensure your final wishes are fulfilled regarding your estate and causes close to your heart. However, many people are put off as they feel they aren’t wealthy enough, they have plenty of time left to organise it, or that all their assets will just go to the right people anyway!

Family is so important to people in Northern Ireland, yet it is incredible to think that 70% of us here still don’t have a Will. Astonishingly, just 4% have included a charitable gift in their Will.

At Northern Ireland Hospice, we hope that our ‘Make a Will Month’ campaign highlights to people how easy it is to make a Will and why it’s so important.

Make a Will Month

Page 19: Caring for infants, children and adults · specialist hospice care for infants, children and adults, both at our facilities on Somerton Road in North Belfast and at Horizon House

Sharon Gorman, Donor Development Officer at Northern Ireland Hospice, and her husband Nigel, were inspired to make their Will during the Hospice’s ‘Make a Will Month’ campaign last year. The couple have also left a small gift in their Will to Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

What is your role at Northern Ireland Hospice?

My role is to raise awareness of the importance of gifts in Wills to Northern Ireland Hospice. I am responsible for organising legacy events such as ‘Make a Will Month’, the ‘Tree of Life Experience’ and Legacy Information Days.

Through legacy events, and relationship building with both supporters and solicitors, I hope to make people feel more comfortable when talking about Wills and share with them the positive impact leaving a gift to NI Hospice can make.

Why is making a Will so important?

Making your Will is really straightforward and it’s one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones and yourself. It can also give you immense peace of mind to know that your final wishes will be fulfilled regarding your loved ones and causes close to your heart. It can also spare your loved ones from making difficult decisions on your behalf, or dealing with the consequences if you haven’t got your affairs in order.

Do you have a Will?

Yes! My husband Nigel and I made our Will during NI Hospice’s ‘Make a Will Month’ campaign last March through Gray Magee Solicitors in Newtownabbey. Our solicitor, Elaine, was so knowledgeable, professional and approachable that on leaving her office we wondered why we hadn’t written a Will much sooner!

For both of us having an up-to-date Will has given us immense peace of mind, knowing that our final wishes will be fulfilled regarding guardianship of our 8-year-old son Adam and the distribution of our estate.

We also included a gift in our Will to Children’s Hospice as it’s a cause so close to our hearts. We know that even a small gift will transform the lives of children needing hospice care in the future.

Why are gifts in Wills important to Hospice?

Gifts in Wills are crucial as they currently fund the care of 1 in 7 of our patients. A gift in your Will to Hospice helps to secure vital hospice care for future generations.
