Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign to bring caring right out into the open, recognising and celebrating the contribution carers make to families and communities throughout the UK. Right now there are around 6.5 million carers in the UK (29,000 estimated in Plymouth), looking after older, seriously ill or disabled family and friends. Caring is part of being human and at the heart of family life. As our population ages and people live longer, often with complex health conditions, more and more of us will find ourselves caring. Yet many still see caring as a private matter. Many people don’t identify themselves as carers, they feel they are just doing what anyone else would so they don’t always know what support is available to them. This year Carers UK are focusing on Building Carer Friendly Communities. Communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. Visit www.carersweek.org to download their research report to find out what they are calling for and how we can all help build Carer Friendly Communities. Take a look inside for an array of events and activities for carers and their families to attend in carers week in Plymouth. Caring for Carers Newsletter May 2017 Issue 14

Support for Carers/ Carers Week Offer - By Simon Stevenson, Partner at Thompson & Jackson Solicitors LLP

With Carers Week 2017 almost upon us, here are a few of the many things that our specialist lawyers at Thompson & Jackson Solicitors can do to help carers or people being cared for. All of

our lawyers are full accredited members of Solicitors for the Elderly and we pride ourselves on providing clear “no-jargon” advice, at a reasonable cost in a friendly and sympathetic manner. We are pleased to be able to offer a discount of £25 off our charges for making a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney. This offer applies to all Will or Lasting Power of Attorney instructions received during June 2017 when you quote “Carers Promo 17” when making your appointment. We are also able to offer free home visits if you are unable to visit our offices *.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) -These allow a person to delegate power to someone else to make decisions for them if in future they can’t make their own decisions. LPA’s can be made in relation to your Property and Finances and Health and Welfare decisions. Both you and the person you are caring for may need to make an LPA in case they have an accident or become confused and are no longer legally able to deal with their own property and financial affairs or take decisions themselves about such matter as their own treatment, or where they should live.

Deputyship - If you or the person you care for becomes mentally incapable of making an LPA but still have finances or property that need dealing with, then someone (who may not be someone of your choice) will have to apply to the Court to be made a Deputy. The Deputy can deal with the property and finances for the mentally incapable person. The process takes 6-8 months on average, and can be very expensive (and certainly far more expensive and time consuming than making a LPA). It is therefore much better that you and the person you care for make LPAs and then they can decide who they trust to deal with their affairs.

Wills - When a family member becomes a carer perhaps for elderly parents, sometimes the whole family agrees that the carer should have a larger part of the property of the parents once they die. Alternatively, the rest of the family may be suspicious and think the carer might have an ulterior motive. To avoid a dispute, it’s important that the parents make the sort of will which they want, and where they try to be fair to everyone. Often we act for carers who are parents of an adult child who might be unable to look after themselves or their finances. In that case, often what the parents need is a trust for their child in their wills. Once both parents have died, the trust in your will can provide financial help or even a roof over the child’s head without giving the child the responsibility of managing things themselves, and without affecting any means tested benefits they receive.

Dementia: Acrostic poems, Gloria May and Helen Phillip

A less good day

Day by day, week by week, month by month, my

memories

Evaporate, increasingly my mind is muddled, I am

confused and as my

Memories disappear, places fade, people fade, and I fade

Eroding, erasing a life lived and a lifetime of memories so that

Now my days are empty, lonely and frightening as I am

Tormented by strange sights, sounds and feelings

Information and sensory overload is my daily reality

And this haunts me even when I close my eyes

A good day

Dementia is me, you, everywhere and people understand that

Everyone can help in their own small way so that my

Memories can be encouraged and rekindled which will

Enrich my life, my sense of self and will give me back my smile

Now is the time for you to make a difference and do what you can

To empower and help me and others on their dementia journeys,

thereby

Improving our lives and those of our carers, the unsung heroes

and heroines

And what a wonderful world that would be – thank you.

I am a carer and I am also a walk leader for ‘Walkswithhistory’ part of the ‘walks for life’ group also based in Plymouth which caters for all people. The idea is to get people walking without noticing, which is the best exercise. It also has an addition benefit that helps people that are lonely, elderly, obese, to regain some confidence, without

noticing, meet with other people, converse, and make new friends. Most walks range from 30 mins to 1 hour and are free…but some major walks are much longer and there is a small fee. Please have a look at the sites on line at https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/walkfinder/plymouth-walks-history or future dates and meets…also there is the Plymouth History festival running soon…plenty of stuff to get people out and about Best regard and thanks for being there - Richard (Carer)
