THE EN12195-2:2001 STANDARD

n = number of lashingsα� = angle of lashings to vertical - sineµ = co-efficient of friction – commonly 0.2 (metal) – 0.6 (rubber)k = co-efficient of transmission – fixed at 2fs = safety factor - 1.25 in forward directionSTF = Standard Tension Force – which is 10% of lashing capacity

This diagram shows how much the load weight moves in transit. Thesefactors are taken into consideration by EN12195-2:2001 making it possible toaccurately quantify the lashings required for any particular load.

The following formula calculates the required number of lashings for a givenload – when the frictional lashing method is used:

What the law says ...

The Road Traffic Act says that anyone who causes or permits a vehicle to be loadedmay be held responsible, if the load is dangerous, and employers have duties underhealth and safety legislation to ensure the safety not just of their own employees, butof anyone affected by their work activity. This includes agency and sub contractdrivers you may employ, anyone who loads or unloads your vehicles, and other roadusers.


DVSA REQUIREMENTS. Must be adhered to!

A secure load is attached to the vehicle so that it will not fall off or affect vehiclestability and pose a risk of danger or injury to other road users.

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 state that ‘…theweight, distribution, packing and adjustment of the load of such vehicle or trailershall at all times be such, that no danger is caused or is likely to be caused to anyperson in or on the vehicle or trailer or on a road.’

DVSA’s enforcementWe will issue a prohibition and fixed penalty of £100 for any load found to beinsecure.


Carrying out a load risk assessment.

A plan showing how a vehicle is loaded is very useful, and can help a driver prove inthe event of a road side spot check that the driver has been responsible in loadingcorrectly.

Employees and the self employed have a legal duty under health and safetylegislation to assess the risk of what they do.

Risk assessment is not a difficult process, all you need to do is think about what youdo, what could go wrong and what would happen, or would anyone be injured if itdid.

You only need to record the assessment if you have 5 or more employees, but evenowner drivers will find it beneficial to write it down as it helps you to identify risks,and what measures you can take to prevent the risk occurring.
