Get Your Flu Shot, Influenza Season

Has Officially Started

The change of season from sum-mer to fall often reminds us of the coming cold and flu season. Although Nebraska has not seen many cases yet, the influenza (flu) season has officially started and will continue until late next spring. Influenza is a serious disease that can cause illness, hospital stays, and even death.

Symptoms of flu may include, fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, head-ache, chills, extreme tiredness, and sometimes diarrhea and vomiting. People with the virus are likely able to spread it from the day before symptoms first appear until about five days after symptoms begin. Sometimes people can spread the disease for as long as 10 days after symptoms appear.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) suggests getting the flu shot every year. It is best to get the shot before the illness even starts making people sick; it takes a full two weeks for the vaccine to start working. Our bodies need time to process the vaccine and prepare for fighting the virus.

GET YOUR FLU SHOT at HOME CARE PLUS,

located at 2319 N Lincoln Avenue, York, NE. Call 402-362-2566

for available times!

For more information on Flu, visit www.cdc.gov/flu or call

Surgery Area UpdateIt’s been a busy time in the future Surgery area at York General. Drywall work is complete and the first coat of paint is on most areas.

Casework for the various areas has been delivered and is being installed. Electrical and mechanical contractors are fininshing the above ceiling work and the celing grid will be installed soon.

Above left: Outpatient room. This is where the patient will be located before and after surgery. There will be glass doors installed on each of the eight rooms, which will greatly enhance the privacy for each patient. In addition, the new area features several additional bath-rooms and more overall space.

Middle left: Nurses’ station will be located just outside of the eight patient rooms.

Bottom left: Brick work continues on the outside of the building. An exit will be located here so that you can pick up your loved one after surgery.

According to York General Project Manager Bob Ailor, the new areas will be ready in early March.

3D Mammography at York General Digital breast tomosynthesis (tomo), also known as 3D mammography, is a screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer.

During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds. Images are displayed as a series of thin slices that can be viewed by our radiologists as indi-vidual images or in a dynamic interactive animation.

3D mammography is often used in combination with 2D digital mammogra-phy. Many studies have substantiated superior breast cancer detection rates when combining 3D mammography with conventional 2D mammography. These studies have demonstrated a 10%-30% increase in overall breast cancer detection (over 2D imaging alone).

This ability to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage will save more lives. Two of the top benefits are improving the early detection of breast cancer and providing peace of mind due to greater clarity and accuracy. This increased accuracy reduces the number of call-backs, sparing women the anxiety, inconvenience and expense of coming back for further imaging.

For more information, contact the York General Imaging Department at 402-362-0441.

York General’s annual Breast Cancer Survivor Celebration was held October 17 at Faith Lutheran Church in York. The evening was hosted by the York General Oncology staff. Over 60 people (breast cancer survivors and guests) enjoyed a meal prepared by JW’s Catering of York.

Ashley Brehm, an inspiring breast cancer survivor and also an internet blogger (babyonthebrehm.com), gave a personal talk following the meal about what got her through her cancer experience.
