A WARM WELCOME

Welcome to Leicester College. This vibrant college is an incredibly exciting environment in which to learn, nurture your talent and develop your skills.

Our industry experienced lecturers and our superb teaching and learning facilities will guarantee that you have the best foundations for a successful career.

By studying with us, young people can remain in education or training until they are 18 but have access to a much wider range of full-time vocational courses and an extensive apprenticeships training offer than they would be able to find in other institutions.

We are very proud that hundreds of our learners progress to university after their course at Leicester College. This shows that vocational qualifications are an important and valuable route into higher education (HE); according to UCAS, BTEC qualifications are now the second most widely used qualification for entry to HE.

Whether you are hoping to become a chef, mechanic, actor, accountant, beauty therapist, biochemist or run your own business, Leicester College is dedicated to helping you achieve your ambitions.

We’re looking forward to becoming part of your future.

STAYING IN EDUCATIONUNTIL YOU’RE 18MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

All young people are now required to stay in education or training until they are 18. Essentially this is to ensure that all young people have the same opportunities to progress their learning. A common misconception is that young people must remain in their current school setting for two further years, following their GCSEs. This is not the case.

By offering young people the opportunity to remain in education until they are 18, they are also offered choice. A choice to identify the best educational or training route. A young person can shape their education and training opportunities, to suit their own skills, and so that they can achieve the best possible outcome.

This includes training such as apprenticeships or vocational courses (such as BTECs). Both qualify as remaining in education till you are 18. Apprenticeships and vocational courses also offer young people the opportunity to progress to university or to successfully start their career.

SPORT

At Leicester College we pride ourselves on offering a variety of opportunities for learners to keep active, take part in competitive sport and engage in college life.

Throughout the year there are daily sessions running at all three campuses. These are free sessions for Leicester College learners and range from team sports to basic fitness classes.

All sessions are open to all learners no matter of level of ability or experience. We encourage learners to get involved, meet new people and even help run the sessions through volunteering. Our Sports Enrichment calendar includes sessions such as UV Exercise to Music Classes, Football, Rugby, Badminton, Cricket, Archery and many more. Unique to Leicester we also run competitive fixtures and competitions with our neighbouring colleges. This is through Leicester City FE Varsity Series. The Varsity Series is divided up into a year-long league of fixtures which then lead up to the Varsity Finals Day. Here Leicester College learners can represent their college in their chosen sport in a semi competitive format against Regent, Gateway and QE Colleges. Both the Varsity Series and Varsity Games engage over 250 students from each of the city’s colleges, who compete in a number of sports (male and female teams) to decide who is the Leicester City Varsity overall champion.

We also offer learners opportunities to help support the sessions through volunteering and coaching, giving learners the opportunities to gain new skills and develop existing skills. We also offer opportunities for learners to gain practical qualifications for coaching and volunteering to prepare them for the Higher Education and the working world. In addition to offering volunteering experience within the college we also support the local schools sports competition’s. We encourage and support our learners to get involved in these external opportunities and again gain valuable experiences and employability skills.

What is a traineeship?High quality work placements – where you can learn what’s expected of you in the workplace, and develop links with local employers

Flexible training - in other relevant areas to help you get ready for work, such as job search and interview skills, time-keeping and team working

Study in English and maths (if appropriate) – employers value these essential skills very highly.

At the end of your traineeship, if there is a job or apprenticeship vacancy with the work placement host, you should receive an interview. If there isn’t a job or apprenticeship opportunity at that time, you will receive an exit interview with the employer who provided the work placement. In this interview you can discuss what you’ve learned, and how it might help you with things like updating your CV and getting into a job or an apprenticeship.

Which qualifications will you get? All traineeships are the same level.

Who can take a traineeship?16-24yrs and qualified below level 3,16-25yrs with learning difficulties.

What sort of experience will you need? You must be:• out of work with little work experience• working for less than 16 hours a week

leaving school/college• finding it hard to get an apprenticeship

not sure you have the skills for an apprenticeship.

How long does it last?Six weeks to six months. How much will you earn?Traineeships are unpaid but most pay travel and meal costs. The 16-19 Bursary Fund may help – it depends on your circumstances whether you get it or not. How much will it cost?Nothing - there aren’t any fees.

What types of traineeship are on offer? Many employers offer both traineeships and apprenticeships – so you may be able to move to the next level with the same employer. You can go into 170 industries with 1400 different job roles such as design assistant, cabin crew, dental nurse or trainee accountant.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES

ACCESSING A BRIGHTER FUTURE We understand that returning to education is a big decision, but we want to reassure you about a couple of things:• Access courses are for adults returning

to education. Everyone on your course will be an adult.

• Our excellent team of tutors and lecturers understand that it may have been a while since you last studied and they are on hand to support you.

We offer courses in:

PROGRESSING TO UNIVERSITY-LEVEL STUDY

The main focus of Leicester College’s Access Diplomas are to prepare our learners for university level study. Throughout each of the programmes learners will undertake modules such as study skills or research and referencing. These subjects are designed not only to support you through the Access course but also to study at a higher level.

Our fantastic Leicester College team will support you from making the decision of which course to study at university, to helping you send off your application and preparing you for any interviews.

ENGLISH AND MATHS SUPPORT

A recent development for both Access courses and progression to university level programmes is the requirement for adult learners to have both English and maths GCSE at a grade C or above.

In many instances the College can support adult learners on Access courses by providing the opportunity to study GCSE maths or English alongside your Access courses.

If you have neither your English nor maths GCSE at grade C or above, you might want to consider our Pre-Access course. This course is an intensive one year full-time programme which concentrates on preparing adult learners to return to study, as well intensive maths and English learning.

If you are aged 24 and over upon completion of a higher education programme any 24+ Advanced Learning Loan will be written off, if it was used to fund an Access course. See page 24.

Every qualification is made up of units. Each unit has a credit value that tells you roughly how long it takes to complete – one credit represents about one hour of work. Each qualification also has its own level, between Entry level and level 8, to show how difficult it is.

Every qualification also comes in different sizes – Award, Certificate or Diploma. Awards are made up of 1 to 12 credits (10 to 120 hours learning), Certificates 13 to 36 credits (130 to 360 hours) and Diplomas 37 credits or more (370+ hours).

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended 2013), documents that there are a number of posts, activities and occupations that are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Under the terms of “Regulated Activity” (Protection of Freedoms Act 2012), before you can start a work placement, you are required to have an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you have a criminal record, you are required to declare to the Risk Assessment Team both ‘spent’ and ‘unspent’ cautions and convictions, other than *‘protected’ cautions and convictions which have qualified for ‘filtering’ and no longer need to be disclosed.

What is an Enhanced DBS Disclosure Check? An Enhanced DBS check is the highest level of criminal record check and is available for those in specific roles that involve regularly caring for, supervising or being in sole charge of children or vulnerable adults. When an Enhanced DBS check is requested, the request goes to all the Police forces where you have lived. Enhanced checks include information held on the Police National Computer (PNC), plus any local Police information held. If you have a criminal record, it will show all details relating to arrests, charges, and convictions. There are also Government lists that record people that are barred from working with vulnerable groups, and they are also checked. Convictions and cautions that don’t apply to the filtering rules are added to your Enhanced DBS Disclosure check.

Why do I need an Enhanced DBS Disclosure?DBS checks are one way that help to protect vulnerable groups in our society by providing a system that identifies people who are unsuitable to work with, or be in positions of responsibility and trust. There are some

positions for which DBS checks are required by law. Courses that have a work placement with children or vulnerable adults as part of the course are dependent on a satisfactory Enhanced DBS Disclosure check, and without this you cannot do your course or start on a work placement.

What happens if I have a previous conviction? If you have a criminal record that you did not declare when you applied or enrolled, the first step is to contact the Risk Assessment Team on 0116 224 2225 or 0116 224 2138 and find out whether your conviction/s are ‘protected’ from disclosure. Having a criminal record will not necessarily stop you from starting a course and work placement. It is essential that you *declare your criminal record, as failure to do so could result in being excluded from the College.

*The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended 2013), state that certain “spent” convictions and cautions are “protected” and are not subject to disclosure and therefore cannot be taken into account. They will be “filtered” and will not appear on a DBS check.

Exceptions to the filtering rules Some offences will never be removed from a DBS Certificate. These include the most serious sexual and violent offences. For more information on the Filtering Rules and how they apply to your DBS check, contact the Risk Assessment Team.

Do I need to pay for my DBS Disclosure? If you are 19 or over on 31st August (i.e. at the start of your course), you will be required to pay *£44 for your DSB disclosure. This fee is non-refundable. If the work placement for your course commences at the start of your course, you must pay this fee before you enrol. Failure to pay the DBS fee will delay your application, and could affect your course. (*fee correct at time of print).
