Jointly organised by KSU and AIESEC for the sixth consecutive year, Careers Convention is now a well established annual event, which big players in both the private industry as well as the public sector look forward to, so as to meet the crème de la crème of students on campus.

Building on previous Careers Conventions, we have now injected this annual gathering of Malta’s economy on campus with new and innovative ideas such as the recycled promotional material to be distributed throughout the event. Furthermore, in an attempt to incorporate companies which emanate from different sectors and not only include the stereotypical participants in employment fairs, we are this year welcoming new sectors to further encourage and show our support for careers which are not the conventional choice for a graduate

As we strive to make this event bigger and stronger each year, we have also added content and variety to our online presence. The event’s website www.careersconvention.com, now includes a photo gallery and a blog, in an attempt to make the event more interactive, thus reaching out to a greater market.

This year’s magazine also continues to embrace the initiative of sustainability taken on by previous organisers, and is once again printed on recycled paper. It now also incorporates a new addition; a double spread entitled “The Sweet Taste of Success” getting an insider’s point of view on their working experience, and so giving students a taste of what the participating companies have to offer.

Debbie Cooper AIESEC | President

Careers Convention is Back! Careers Convention presents students with numerous opportunities opening a door into the working world. PROFILE

The Kunsill ta’ l-iStudenti Universitarji (University Students’ Council) is the oldest national student union in Europe. KSU was founded by Arturo Mercieca (later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca) in 1901, as the Comitato Permanente Universitario. The student union involved itself in student politics as well as national politics.

KSU represents all students attending the University, Junior College, the Institute of Health Care, Medical School and the Malta Centre of Restoration - on both a national and international level.

Although times have changed since the organization was founded, the aim of KSU remains unchanged. Although Malta has progressed greatly since 1901, this does not reduce the importance of the contribution that each and every student can give to University and society in general. Life and University should not only consist in studying, and KSU is an ideal forum where every student can express his or her ideas regarding issues that, strictly speaking, have nothing to do with his or her studies. KSU gives the student the opportunity not only to attend, but also to actually breathe what University life should be all about.

WHY US?

Although in itself KSU is a dynamic organization and therefore it is open for change and debate, like other organizations, it finds its roots in a set of fundamental objectives on which the organisation was founded. Over the past 107 years, KSU has been working:

To represent students in whatever • issues concern them, whether it is on a national or international level;

To serve as an official link between • students and the relevant authorities;

To achieve the democratization of • education in Malta;

To coordinate activities with other • organisations;

To cultivate students’ interest in the • fields of education, socio-political and cultural issues;

To pressure authorities into assuring • the highest level of quality in Higher Education.

This years’ council has set itself 5 main pillars: direction, education of the highest quality, a council closer to the students through better channels of communication, stronger student participation with more accessibility to everyone and a headed direction for the future of University students. Thus KSU this year is actively working towards its own commitment for better student representation in the fullest sense of the word.

KSU’s Executive Committee is pushing forth the renewed emphasis that University is not simply an academic domain where one specializes within a particular field or profession, but it is a forum for exchange of experiences between students as well as one of the ultimate steps which completes the student formation process.

1 - Get SetPractice is of the utmost importance yet this step is normally disregarded. One should anticipate the questions that are likely to be asked. Getting acquainted with the company you’ve applied to join would also put you at ease, as this is a question that you are sure to be asked. Being prepared and well informed can leave a good impression. Good preparation also means less stress during the interview and could easily give you that edge over your competing candidates. Keep in mind that you need to convince your interviewer on how you would be beneficial to the organization. This is the ideal time to impress the interviewer and so making him specifically remember you individually.

2 - Get ReadyMake sure that you are smartly and appropriately dressed according to the type of job you are actually applying for. Doing up your tie or applying make-up in the lift might be something you’ll regret if the person next to you would be your interviewer without you even realizing so. Taking a portfolio, with correspondence, copies of the CV and certificates and writing pad with pencil and pen will help you seem prepared.

Tips for an Effective Interview

3 - Get There in TimePunctuality is essential. Being on time means being there early. This will show that you are responsible and that you care and deem the interview to be important. If need be, one should go to the venue where the interview will take place a day before; in order to see the exact location and the time needed to get there as well as to get acquainted with the environment within the firm.

4 - Stay CalmOne should stay calm, not only while waiting, but during the interview itself. A firm hand shake and direct eye contact affects one’s first

impressions and can easily influence the interviewer’s opinion of you.

5 - Be SincereMake sure that you are as knowledgeable as you could be about the firm. Rather than guessing answers to questions you can’t answer, show your willingness to learn and admit that you do not know the answer. When discussing your accomplishments and experience be realistic and relate to how these could be beneficial to the employer. If you understand that the job is not what you were expecting, use this time to express your feelings before the interviewer asks to meet up again.

Imagine any situation you may have found yourself in and you are bound to think of some competition you faced, be it a common entrance exam, on a race track or even a job interview. For every job application you submit, always keep in mind that a number of other people have also applied for the same post. Although new opportunities constantly arise, the number of graduates and people looking for employment are increasing at a higher rate; making the competition only tougher to keep up with. It is the way in which one sells his or herself during an interview that can determine whether s/he won the competition or not. So what can you do to start the race 1 step ahead?

AIESEC is a student organisation that’s been around for sixty odd years now. The main activity this organisation performs is providing work exchanges abroad. AIESEC members have the opportunity to work with a company overseas. The choice is endless! The four types of internships we offer are:

Management – internships •related to administration, finance, accounting, marketing, project management and HR.

Development – usually with NGOs, •internships usually relate to wide variety of issues in community development.

Technical – internships related to •management and development in web, software, networks, and databases, plus some engineering.

International Internships:Worth the Exchange?

Education – internships related to •promotion, curriculum development, teaching, and counselling in the education sector.

The process is quite simple and the applicant works together with the Exchange section of AIESEC Malta very closely. This, I assure you, is not to decrease their workload. Oh no! It is there to make the applicant feel like they were a part of the process... that they bought about a positive change in their future for themselves.

Going on an exchange is an amazing experience where you not only grow in terms of the skills you acquire but you also grow as a person. People who have gone on one of these exchanges swear by them and often-a-time wonder what they’re doing back home. It is a great opportunity and

privilege to go on one and it provides you with a treasure-trove of skills, memories, experiences, and friends.

So, if you’re a person who’s interested in travelling and working, enjoy discovering and interacting with new cultures and their peoples, or just looking for something new to try out, then get in contact with AIESEC Malta and take a positive step for your future. I can guarantee you, you won’t regret it!

With the Christmas, Easter, and Summer holidays looming around the corner (well… depending when you read this article), people would tend to associate exchanges with gifts and figolli, what you’re giving and what you’re getting - and sometimes - what you’re returning come Boxing Day. That, though, is not the topic being presented in this short article.

The Employment & Training Corporation is the local agency which offers the services of EURES. EURES Malta has been up and running since 1st May 2004. Through the EURES network, ETC is now contributing to the provision of services offered throughout the EU. This is being done together with the other Public Employment Services (PESs) of the European Union and European Economic Area. While PESs in each country are structured differently, they all share the same basic task of contributing towards matching supply and demand on the labour market within the European Union through the provision of information, placement and active support services. EURES has a human network of more than 700 EURES advisers that are in daily contact with job seekers and employers across Europe.

WHY US?

The ETC employs a number of trained EURES advisors. These have already been having appointments and meetings with hundreds of job seekers and a good number of employers. EURES advisors do not only give their clients advice on particular job opportunities, but they also furnish job seekers with useful information, on the conditions of workers in foreign countries, taxation, accommodation and other living conditions. Furthermore, the EURES office helps local and European employers to fill in their shortages.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

All vacancies are promoted on the EURES portal http://eures.europa.eu. The vacancies cover a wide range of occupations and include permanent and seasonal job opportunities. Each vacancy has information on how to apply and whom to contact. The contact may be either a EURES adviser, who will process the application or, in other cases, contact can be made directly with the employer. The EURES job search database is updated daily by the European employment services, and vacancy notices only stay on the system as long as they are current. In this same website, one can also read about living and working conditions, search for learning opportunities and submit the C.V. online. The C.V. will be viewed by all registered employers around the E.U. There is a specific section for graduates under Jobseekers section which has a number of specific tips for job search and job mobility.

So are you a sweet or a savoury person? What would you associate success with? Apple pie? Black Forest? Yummy yummy Chocolate Fudge? Or is it Pizza, Steak, Grilled Sea Bass? Sorry we don’t cater for vegetarians!

Success can come in many shapes and forms. It might be the rush of exhilaration of seeing a pass mark on an exam result you were absolutely dreading. It might be the acceptance letter for a job you really wanted, that comes after two weeks of knee knocking suspense after the interview. Or it might even be the SMS from a much sought after crush, accepting a date.

The Sweet Taste of Success

But this is Careers Convention, and we are all enterprising and ambitious students who are ready to hit the 8am – 5pm working world with a vengeance and bring to bear the prodigious knowledge that we have amassed in lecture halls, over cigarettes and coffees on Quad, in the library and on the benches of the Japanese Garden. Yes? YES? Some enthusiasm please...

So as the aforementioned enterprising students, we enterprisingly went into the working world and asked ex university students who are now gainfully employed professionals on how they see their career as being successful so far.

We got a variety of answers, relating to working with other people, learning new skills, relationships with others and personal growth. For example, an individual working within the realm of Financial Services, when asked about success and what she associates it with, replied that she thinks that her career so far has been successful because it provides her with opportunities for continued professional development.

“...I think that I have grown thanks to the firm’s philosophy and core principles which put me in a position to be able to widen my horizons by allowing me to experience working on varied engagements, whilst at the

Success is a good thing, something that leaves you with a positive feeling. Hence the ‘Sweet’ in the title. It’s metaphorical. Now I’m more of a savoury person, so I’m going to extend the metaphor and relate the taste of success to a delicious entree of Bresaola with melted Mozzarella di Bufala and grilled Aubergines followed by a nice juicy succulent piece of Bistecca Fiorentina (no vegetables with my meat thank you!) and topped off with chunks of the finest Applewood and Grana Padano cheeses accompanied with hunks of Maltese Ftira. Mmmmmmm... Technically, it’s savoury, not sweet. Metaphorically, it’s the same thing.

Andrew Agius AIESEC | National Support Team External Relations

22

Page 25: Careers' Convention 2009

same time ensuring that I was well equipped to be able to deal with new experiences.”

Another person associated the success of her career so far with the organisational culture of the firm and with the social network fostered within the company.

“I like working in a small team which is the department team (we are 4 people) while it also involves working with a big team which is the company itself. Most of the time we have projects which interact into different departments since we all take care of different aspects of HR. The team spirit that runs through all the company is great as we all try and help each other out in one way and another. I like the fact that there is a team spirit and that my colleagues do not withhold information so as to be competitive.”

Surprisingly, nobody associated money with success. The focus was on the environment and interpersonal relations so I can see one of two possible reasons: a. It’s true that money isn’t everything. b. Students who think along the lines of, “I’ll get a job, buy a Ferrari, fly to the Bahamas, and buy a villa with a pool...” are grossly misguided!

Psychological research into organisations and careers has revealed that Job Satisfaction is less closely related to financial remuneration than to working conditions. Primarily, people are happy at their jobs and consider themselves to be in a

successful position if they enjoy a smooth and friendly relationship with their colleagues. Conversely, research into the causes of stress at the workplace has indicated that the most common and most powerful cause of organisational stress is negative relations with work mates.

Interviewers and employers are increasingly focusing on personality and soft skills when selecting candidates. Perhaps it’s time that prospective employees (us) upped the game, and pre-empt the interviewer. If we want a successful career, it would seem that it’s not them who should be asking us about our character, it should be us, as ambitious young people to ask, “Well Mr. Interviewer, how will your company’s organisational culture be congruent to my personality traits? Haha! Didn’t see that coming did you!”

It is expected by democratic nations who truly believe and abide by norms as fundamentally explained in their legislations and work ethics.

If our generations fail to endorse that work holds the key to human happiness and fulfilment, then we are living a lie. If governments give in or permit that work is exclusively an economic activity, but not also a social activity, then these governments are not only betraying their own democratic principles but they are committing a crime, which history in the future will judge.

Until a few years ago, progressive philosophies of work used to be degraded by communist or fascist politicians in their totalitarian governance.

Stalin in the immediate post war era created concentration camps called “Gulags”. Francisco Franco of Spain;

Work Today

Pinochet of Chile; though defined as rightists are known for their atrocities and how they defined work as a punishment for their people. These are only few examples.

This is history and communism and fascism are no more. How can we be sure that man, through work, is being treated as a human being and considered for what he is and not for what he has ?Are we sure that trade-unions are not being caught “between two minds”?

Economic Crisis, financial crisis, recession, inflations, lack of job security. The world is passing through this unfortunate scenario. Why? I retain that we are experiencing forms of excessive Liberalism; over trading, due to fear or more phobia of competitiveness.

Last year we saw the collapse of what was once considered a top financial-services firm, “Lehman Bros”. As a consequence we witnessed lack of credibility and uncertainty among the top nations.

How is work perceived today? Why do some people look at it differently than others? Is work to be considered a form of curse or an expression of the workers personality? In today’s world, we hear about human rights daily; social models; improved conditions of work. Is it to be expected that work is nothing but an instrument created by man for man, its only purpose to obtain decently his daily bread or is it contributing to the progress of technology, as well as towards the improvement of culture and morality among the society in which he lives in community with others?

Arthur Rossi Vice President C.M.T.U.

The G8 met and met. Today we hear that there may be a spiral of hope to recovery, but not unless we have the courage to change ourselves. If not this world’s going to remain a jungle, with the most powerful taking the upper hand at the expense of others.

Industrial relations are the solution. Not only between trade-unions, but also in governments and employers. The tripartite model must be put to work again, but first the fundamental concept that man comes first must be accepted as a pre-condition. It’s easy to speak and voice that social dialogue and social justice are the pillars of solutions. The true pillars of solution are the conviction and will power that only through a workable social pact, can challenges be overcome and our society be saved. This is what future generations expect. Our young men must also do their part. Its wrong to condemn, without constructive input. To our young people, I say, do your part, the future is yours.

More often then not, our passion for a particular field tends to blind us and make us forget many other options which given a more objective outlook we would probably find to be useful alternatives to our first target. Thinking only within the parameters of one’s passion, means that more often then not one will lose the opportunity to pick up a field which is equally interesting but not as common and cliché perhaps.

Does this mean that it’s wrong to follow one’s passion? Of course not, indeed the first element which one should consider when making such a choice is “Will this particular career give me satisfaction in what I will be doing?” Often enough working on something which gives you little or no satisfaction means you won’t give it your all and in ever competitive world not giving it your

A Mindful, Hearty Career ChoiceChoosing a career is by far not as simple as some may make it out to sound. What elements should one consider when making such a vital choice? What elements should be given a huge weight and what elements are best put aside as mere side notes which one should give little if any attention to?

all means you’ll most definitely fall back as compared to your competition.

The next question you should ask is “Do I have the natural skills required?” Don’t get this the wrong way; it doesn’t mean you have to be a natural or a pro from day one. It merely means that you should be sure to have a certain natural aptitude for the subject. Putting it more simply can you imagine choosing to study for a degree in accountancy when the very presence of numbers makes you go green in colour?

“Is this interest a life long interest or just a phase?” Choosing a career is a life long choice of sorts so when making this choice, make sure that your choice is something you can live with in the long run and not something which will wear off. If you’re the kind of person that goes through

phases and crazes be sure that just this once it’s neither a craze nor a phase.

“Will I find a job? Will I get a good wage?” Making sure that your choice is a realistic one in terms of employability is important but you shouldn’t make it your be all do all. The English say that, “when there’s a will there’s a way”. The same can be said for employment. Even if the market may seem hard to penetrate either due to heavy competition or perhaps limited opportunities, you can make it if you try hard enough. All you need to make sure is that there is a market to begin with or the potential for one. As for wage; money isn’t everything, so don’t choose path A over B based solely on the rumors you’d have heard on the pay cheque.

COMPANY PROFILE

Malta School of Flying was established in 2004 by two private pilots who knew too well the difficulty for young Maltese to achieve their ambitions of becoming pilots. Based on their own experiences, they set up what has now become Malta’s largest flying school.

The company has developed its range of courses as part of its growth process, and through a business alliance forged with the renown Bournemouth Commercial Flight Training, can offer students the opportunity to further their studies to become fully-fledged Commercial Pilots of the highest caliber within contained expense.

WHY BECOME A COMMERCIAL PILOT?

Despite various economic downturns, the world has seen considerable growth in commercial flying. This, combined with the fact that a considerable number of pilots will reach retirement age over the next ten years guarantees that there will always be a demand for good, experienced pilots in the years to come. Pilots employed by major airlines enjoy substantial salaries and enjoy a number of benefits.

WHERE TO START?

The very first step is obtaining a Private Pilot’s License. This allows you to fly a single-engined private aircraft for your personal enjoyment. A Night Rating allows you greater flexibility. Once you have completed at least 150 flying hours, you can proceed to the Commercial Pilot’s License and the Air Transport Pilot’s License. This allows you to fly single-engined aircraft commercially. Your final step is the Multi-Engine and Instrument Ratings, which allow you to fly multi-engined aircraft at any time and in inclement weather. Once you achieve this certification, you may proceed to get your Flight Instructor rating, or if you prefer a career flying airliners, a Multi-Crew Coordination Course.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Obtaining a pilot’s licence is an investment in oneself. Before any money changes hands, we will be pleased to discuss your prospects and offer you any guidance you may require. It is also advisable that you undergo your medical tests at this stage, to avoid any disappointments at a later stage. We hold four PPL courses annually, and a distance-learning training system is also available.

Who is Fiona, how did you get into the art of dance and what are your future goals?

I am 25 years old and currently have my second degree in dance. I work full-time as an Administrator Manager and I also teach Ballet, Spanish, Contemporary and Jazz in the evenings. I formed part of a Maltese dance company for two years. We took part in a number of festivals and shows on a local and international level across Europe.

Funnily enough, my parents sent me to jazz lessons for my 7th birthday. My dance teacher (today my colleague and the school director within the same school), approached my parents about her belief in my talent and convinced them to let me dance Spanish and

eventually also Ballet. My dad didn’t originally like the idea but in time, he got used to the idea of seeing me in leotards and castanet’s.

Most of my goals have been reached. Now I am also planning my wedding and preparing for my last Teaching exam in Spanish and Ballet, which I will hopefully sit for next year.

So why did you stop dancing in festivals?

My passion has always been to dance myself. However due to international dancing commitments that came up, I had to choose between teaching and dancing myself, as the extensive travelling was clashing with my teaching commitments. Also, due to Malta’s

limited market there is little potential for a full-time dancer here.

When did you discover that an academic path was not for you and how did you realize you had a future on stage?

I always knew that I had no future in school books. I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 7 and back then, schools had a different mentality. In senior school my teachers were more supportive and recognized that dyslexia is a condition and not just a case of laziness. However, unfortunately it was a little bit too late for me, as I had already missed out on a lot. I went to lessons specifically designed for me and that is when I

Fiona overcame numerous obstacles throughout her unconventional education and now holds two degrees in dance; Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance Associate Diploma and Spanish Dance Society IDB 2. Today a qualified dance teacher across a number of disciplines, Fiona gives us an insight on how her future came as her 7th birthday present.

learnt my basics. All dyslexic people learn differently. I learn in patterns… which is why I think that dancing comes so naturally to me. Even in dancing, the routine itself is second nature, but learning the theory was always problematic. I would choose a chapter of a book and link it to objects in a particular room so that I could associate theories to objects by recalling what I was doing at the time.

I think I must have been about 12 when I realised that I wanted to dance day and night… so that’s when I started to push myself further and my teachers did the same because they had then realised that my method of learning revolved around patterns. I see the dance studio and remember in which direction I should go… I make patterns on the floor and follow them. I see no pattern in books… so although I could easily understand a maths theory, it would be hard for me to work it out.

You left home at quite a young age to study at Kate Simmons School of Dance in Manchester. How difficult was it and what sort of future would you imagine for yourself if you hadn’t gone to the UK?

It wasn’t so difficult to leave home… internet wasn’t as it is today. I got a phone call once a week and I was fine… until I got a mobile. That was when I started feeling home sick. Before that I wasn’t missing my family and friends so much since I didn’t feel like I was missing out on a lot. My busy time-table also kept me occupied. The hardest bit was probably the homework. We used to get specific exercises to which I used to dedicate the entire weekend to complete, whilst my friends would finish them in a few minutes before class. At first my teachers couldn’t understand what I was trying to say in my theory work but they quickly figured out an alternative and we would talk it over so I could explain myself better.

Of course cooking and cleaning after 12 hours of dancing in really cold

weather wasn’t easy either. A typical school day would start at 8 AM in

the studio. It was 7 degrees and we had to wear leotards and tights. No excuses for latecomers were accepted and my school day finished on average at 7 PM, Mondays to Saturdays.

I cannot imagine anything else for myself. If I hadn’t studied dance abroad I would probably be at home in the mornings and dancing in the afternoons. However, what I accomplished there

in 2 years, I believe would have taken

me at least 6 years in Malta.

Did you get special assistance because you were dyslexic?

Unfortunately when I was younger, many people had a ‘miskina’ attitude. That’s what I loved about my teachers in the UK. My problem was only a problem when I had to write, which I had the necessary assistance for. As for anything else, I was pushed more and more and they expected just as much from me as from anyone else.

Considering the local educational system, what would you change to give students who have the potential to have a career in the performing arts the chance to do so?

I would encourage the parents to be more open minded. Thank God my parents were, but this may have been because I was dyslexic and so they couldn’t see me doing anything else. However when I come across some extremely talented dance students, who are also capable of accomplishing a university degree, I find that their parents would tend to push them to go for an academic path. I would push for the dancing career because you can’t be a dancer forever but you can always go back to studying.

On a positive note, schools have started ballet lessons during school hours. However, there is still a big stereotypical divide as boys are sent for football training whilst the girls have their ballet lessons.

Let Fiona’s experience be an example to everyone who is stressing out before exams. Keep in mind that success is not dependent on being an academic genius but purely on willingness to learn and the determination to succeed.

R&I has also become a key challenge on Malta’s national agenda considering its crucial contribution to national competitiveness. Indeed, through the National Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation 2007 – 2010, proposed by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST), Malta has set one of its economic targets to boost national research and innovation capacity and have ‘Research and Innovation at the heart of the Maltese economy to support value added growth and wealth’.

The National R&I Programme administered by MCST is one of the instruments proposed in the National Strategy Plan for R&I and funds a number of competitive and scientifically relevant projects. The funds are allocated on the basis of a public call for proposals and an external peer review system. It focuses on the following priority areas:

Environment and energy resources •with focus on solar, wind and bio energy together with energy efficiency technologies, as well as water, desalination, waste rehabilitation technologies, soil and marine management.

ICT with focus on software •development related to bridging technologies in security, hardware, telecommunications, health, marine and specialised applications.

Value-Added Manufacturing and •Services with focus on building SMEs

as cluster elements in value-added manufacturing and services provision.

Health-Biotech with focus on •human genetics, bio-informatics for support of clinical trials including pharmacogenetic ones and bio-technology for transition of generic pharmaceuticals.

The National R&I Programme and other related initiatives, have enabled national research and innovation to grow. This growth is primarily the result of a high level of competence, excellence and rapid learning on the

part of Maltese researchers, technical experts and administrative support staff, both in the public and private sectors at large. The projects presented at SERI 2009 are just an appetizer of the research and innovation potential in Malta. We do hope to be able to share knowledge and best practices with other scientists, researchers, SMEs and research and innovation professionals to facilitate the creation of synergies and transform available knowledge into innovation.

Through their ability to timely exploit new technologies, SMEs, have been instrumental in cultivating innovation and are hence the catalysts of economic growth in Europe. It is due to this that Research and Innovation (R&I) is regarded as the fulcrum underpinning the future competitiveness of European industry and the economic well being of its citizens through science technology and research careers.

Whether you are a first or final year student, finding a job that is in line with your studies is not an easy feat. If you have had a hand at it, you have certainly been told that you “lack experience”. This should give you a clear indication that completing your studies and attaining decent grades is only part of the story.

With the number of graduates increasing employers are almost sure to have their mailboxes flooded with CVs for any vacancy they advertise. So from where do you start to be first in the pile?

Start Early

Getting involved in some student organisation or alternatively having a steady job whilst at university is certainly one of the prerequisites. This clearly indicates to employers that you are capable at multi tasking and managing your time - key skills for any job. Taking this route gives you sharp end exposure to get a job done and deliver. You will almost certainly come across a number of businessmen and key decision makers that could possibly be your future employers once you graduate. Experiences gained in student organisations or work give you a different outlook to life when compared to the “home to lecture to home” students, almost certainly giving you an edge during any interview. Getting involved not only improves your career prospects but is also great fun.

Get a Job!

Getting a job especially in the summer months (and ideally beyond) is essential. You would not want to tell your interviewer that you spent all your summer months at the beach! My

suggestion to you is to start in March/April, speak to lecturers, friends and relatives and ask around. Summer jobs exist; the trick is to identify them. I would also suggest that you specifically target all companies that offer careers in your line of studies. Accept any job with these companies as it gives you the opportunity to get noticed.

Your CV

At KONNEKT we receive thousands of CVs a year. Thanks to Europass standard most look the same. When I was at uni they used to tell us “differentiate yourselves”, it seems that this piece of wisdom stopped to be passed on. Can you explain how you expect to stand out if your CV is in the same format as that of all your class mates? Still think that Europass CV is for you? Find a professional and organised format and move away from Europass… no fussy formats just plain professional.

Get Moving

Success in job hunting, like everything, has a lot to do with never giving up and being smart. You certainly cannot wait for the right job to be published on the newspaper. Identify potential employers, send them a CV, follow up (yes follow up) and ask if there is a possibility for an interview. From my experience following up on a CV is the single most effective way to stand out from the rest, and demonstrates your commitment that you really want the job.

Be Prepared

If you are asked to attend an interview be prepared, prepare an introduction about yourself and prepare honest

answers for the most common questions. Interviewers like to hear about you and situations you have been in – here is where experience with student organisations comes in handy. Make sure that you describe the situation you have been in, your actions and the resulting outcome. Prepare examples for the most common competencies (e.g. communication skills, customer focus, resilience etc). If you do this you come across as knowing yourself and your stuff.

The Interview

After all that effort you finally got an interview. Make your research on the company and ideally on the person meeting you. Dress appropriately… yes, even if is in the middle of summer. Make sure you know for which job you are being interviewed and take a copy of your CV. Finally you have to be at least 10 mins early. During the interview be positive. Make sure you get the contact details of the interviewers so that you can thank him/her for the opportunity. Following up makes you stand out.

Be Flexible

So you are lucky and have been offered the job. You don’t want to say “no thanks” because it clashes with your Saturday night out. Getting a job whilst at university is your guarantee for a head start to your career. Make sure that you have your priorities right.

Some of you might still say that studies take all of their time. My view is that it is all a question of how you use your time. My experience is that if you are disciplined you can still be active and attain good grades – it simply depends whether you are committed to do both.
