Summer Experiences and Industry Breakdown    15     How and When Freshmen and Sophomores                  Found Positions          15   Positions Reported          16‐19   Introduction Each  year,  Career  Services  surveys  Penn  undergraduates  to  gather  information  about  their  summer experiences.  In 2007, a total of 440 College of Arts and Sciences students participated in the survey, of which 312 are members of the Class of 2008, who reported on their summers between their junior and senior years.  Among survey respondents from the College of Arts and Sciences:  

• University of Pennsylvania (23) is the top summer employer for College students, followed by Goldman Sachs (8), UBS (6), Bain (5), Lehman Brothers (5), McKinsey (5), and Morgan Stanley (5). 

• 110 lived in New York City, 48 in Philadelphia, and 21 in Washington DC. • Survey data confirms the importance of networking: over 33% of survey respondents obtained 

their summer jobs through contacts/family/friends/faculty. • 34% of juniors found their internships through on‐campus recruiting and career services leads.  • Among juniors, the average full‐time monthly pay was $2,225, which represents a 7% decline 

from 2007.  Compared to 2007, the percentage of juniors who were employed in the financial services industry increased significantly (from 15% to 26% of survey respondents). 

• There appears to be a shift towards financial careers as students advance:  Among freshmen and sophomores, 37% worked in a nonprofit and 17% worked in finance; among juniors, 25% worked in a nonprofit and 26% worked in finance.
