Employs approximately 1.3 million staff (in England alone) Comprises around 450 separate organisations (usually known as “Trusts”) - each an employer in its own right 62% of the workforce are not doctors, dentists or nurses Nearly half of NHS staff have degree-level/professional qualifications Spends around £4 billion per year on higher education and training leading to registration Centralised process for some graduate opportunities (but not all) Invests in part-time study for staff – up to to degree, diploma and professional qualification level Role re-design affecting range of opportunities available
