Early this summer, four LMC students are high flying with NASA. And if that isn’t enough, they’ll be conducting their own creative engineering experiment in a zero gravity environment. All four students are a part of the LMC MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement Program).

Team Bazinga is one of a small select group of college and university teams chosen by NASA to design experiments and test them in a reduced gravity environment. NASA offers this

competitive opportunity through Microgravity University: for Minority Serving Institutions and Community College.Their experiment is entitled “Precision and Accuracy of an Electromagnetic Launching System” involves using a magnetic field to project a small object towards a target.

Are you planning a trip? Embarking on a new adventure? Thinking about going to college perhaps? Or

are you looking for new career? No matter where you are off to this year, it is best to have a plan and roadmap to ensure your success.

Before embarkingLos Medanos College has designed a series of workshops to assist new and returning college students to be successful throughout their college life. The best way to get off to a great start is to attend New Student Orientation, a New Student Enrollment Workshop or meet with an academic

counselor to plan first semester courses.

Where do I go?If you are a new college student and you are not sure what to study or what major to choose, you are not alone! The majority of new college students are not sure what to study and often change their

majors up to five times during their college career. College is a time for self-discovery, figuring out who you are and where your interests lie.

LMC’s Undeclared and Choosing a Major Workshop will provide many answers to help you select your future career. You will explore your likes, dislikes and talents. You will discover your interests, select a major, and connect your major to your future career. The workshops are conducted by our career center coordinator, Teresea Archaga, a certified career counselor. Studies show that students who have a clear educational goal or career goal are more successful. Students needing more in-depth study in addition to workshops may take counseling courses such as Orientation to College (COUNS-30) and Career Development (COUNS-32).

Returning adults or re-entry students are provided with a “Welcome Back” evening event introducing adult students to the variety of college support systems designed for working adults. Part of being successful in college is being connected to the college and to others who share similar experiences. Returning adults have ongoing “Social Circles” meetings throughout the year. Students get to know fellow classmates, experience things together, and learn success tips from one another.

Staying on the road.Once enrolled in the classes on the road to your future, you will want to be successful in your classes because grades do count. To increase your chances of succeeding in your classes, LMC provides workshops at key times during the academic year.

¶ Notetaking workshops: offered early in the semester, we provide these workshops using the Cornell Method that will make you more confident about your class notes. You will be better prepared for tests and other assignments.

¶ Time management workshops: designed for students struggling with the coordination of their busy schedules are offered early in the semester. Time management is really about setting priorities, developing workable schedules and turning in class assignments on time.

¶ Test taking workshops: offered during midterms and finals. You will learn tips and tricks to maximize your preparation for testing. (Recommended to take with a stress management workshop.)

¶ Stress management workshops: teach students how to relieve the stress of school and reduce the anxiety of test taking before midterms and finals.

In addition, tutoring is provided on various subjects at the Center for Academic Support. Designed to provide extra academic support outside the classroom, this free support is conducted by reading and writing consultants, college instructors, and trained college students (peer mentors).

Arriving at your destinationAs students approach for the completion of their college goals, they are invited to participate in workshops to get them ready to leave college. The Career Center offers a series of workshops that prepare students to leap from the classroom to the world of work.

¶ Resume workshops: include the fundamentals of writing an effective resume that will get results. Whether students are applying for a summer job or a full-time career, the workshops will help them land the job they want.

¶ Did I say that?: will focus on preparing students to say what employers want to hear. This workshop is designed to take the edge off the interview process by reviewing various interview styles and tips for each of them.

Employers are looking for reliable, responsible workers who can solve problems and who have the social skills and attitude to work together with others. The Career Center provides many employability skill training workshops to choose from. If transferring to a 4-year university is on your horizon, you can choose a variety of workshops that will prepare you for the UC application, letter of intent, scholarship and personal essays. The college also offers courses that prepare students for successful transfer such as Transfer Planning (COUNS-33) or AVID-Advancement Via Individual Determination (EDUC-10).

degree? Check out Los Medanos College’s new Transfer Academy, now offered for the first time in Fall 2011!

What is the Transfer Academy? Starting at a community college and then transferring

to a four-year institution is a common strategy for students looking to earn a bachelor’s degree. The Transfer Academy at Los Medanos College (LMC), funded by the college’s Title V EXITO Grant, is a new program targeting incoming students who want to transfer to a four-year college or university.

At LMC, we recognize that our campus is the first step for many students on their educational journey, and we want you to be successful! College is a time of curiosity, learning, new friendships, growth, and sometimes stress. We also know that your success in your first year of college will set the stage for your future career. The Transfer Academy provides a dynamic academic experience with strong supports in and outside of the classroom, like academic counseling, tutoring, workshops, social and cultural experiences, leadership development, and campus tours. The academy is a community of students, faculty,

and staff working together to keep you on target to transfer in a reasonable time period.

• Commit to being part of a dynamic college program

In October of 2010, Los Medanos College (LMC) was awarded a five-year federal grant – a Title V Hispanic-Serving Institutions Grant – that will help expand educational opportunities for students in East Contra Costa County. The purpose of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program is to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of Latino and first-generation students.

The grant titled ÉXITO, which means “success” in Spanish, will focus on improving transfer rates from LMC to four-year colleges and universities. Through the grant, LMC will work on three areas: 1) improving its partnerships with high schools and families, 2) expanding LMC’s Transfer Center and services, including the new Transfer Academy for students, and 3) supporting assessment and offering professional development for faculty and staff.

On a recent warm sunny afternoon, I was walking across campus and was delighted to hear squeals of laughter coming from the children’s playground of Los Medanos College’s Child Study Center. As I peered over the level, I saw the source of all the fun-

two student teachers had set up a ‘trike wash’ on the bicycle path in the sunny play area below. Children were riding their wheeled toys under a stream of water, screaming with delight as

the cool spray hit their backs on their way through the ‘wash.’

A career of working with and educating young children is filled with afternoons like this—opportunities to engage children in experiences that teach them about the natural and social world through rich episodes of play and discovery!

Students in LMC’s Child Development Program have many opportunities to learn about the growth and development of children, as well as the foundations of caring for and educating young children. Many career paths are available to students interested in working with children and families. Students can begin working in this field as a teaching aide with as few as six units of course work in child development, all the way to pursuing an associate degree

with the option to transferring to a four-year college for a baccalaureate degree. There are also courses for working professionals who desire additional training or specialization for professional advancement or to renew their permit. Specializations are offered in the areas of Infant/Toddler Care, Special Needs Education, Administration, and the School Age Child. Students who have already completed a local ROP or high school specialization in “Careers with Children” gain the added benefit of receiving college credit for courses completed in their high school or ROP program.

There are considerable employment opportunities in this field. Industry analysts project a 6 percent increase in job opportunities in this field in the next five years. Students entering employment with 6-12 units of early

childhood education units can expect to earn $10-$14 per hour in entry-level positions in private, faith-based, and non-profit programs and preschools. With additional coursework and experience, master teachers and elementary school teachers will earn around $36,000-$44,000 annually. Directors, administrators, and owners of large family childcare programs can expect to earn $60,000 or more. Students who go on to pursue a master’s degree can teach child development and early childhood education classes at the community college level, where salaries range between $35,000 and $75,000 annually. Even a health care professional with a specialty in pediatrics can benefit from coursework and a degree in child development.

Particular strengths of the LMC Child Development Department include student support services available through state grant programs. Those state-sponsored programs include the California First Five Initiative, the Child Development Training Consortium, the LMC Teacher Mentor Program and the Foster Care Education Program.

LMC’s vibrant Child Study Center provides childcare for LMC students while also serving as a teaching and demonstration laboratory for students majoring in child development. Currently, the Center offers programs for toddlers, preschool, and pre-K children. A program for children with special needs and their parents is also on site, run by the Contra Costa County Office of Education. The Child Study Center is one of the few centers in the area that has applied for, received, and maintained National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Accreditation, the highest stamp of professional approval an early childhood education program can receive!

The Center offers a special “student internship” opportunity where qualified students receive compensated on-the-job training while they are working towards their child development certificate or degree. This is an excellent way to help pay one’s way through college while gaining valuable professional experience.

And this is NOT just a career for WOMEN! Men can also find satisfying and lucrative career options in classrooms and programs that serve young children. Since many children

suffer from a lack of male influence and role models in their life, having a positive male role model in classrooms and programs is a valuable contribution to the community! One male graduate of our program, Tim Bongco, has completed his BA degree and is now working as a lead teacher in the Child Study Center at San Francisco State! Tim

One answer is to gain self-confidence through the performing arts. At Los Medanos College (LMC) our newly energized and exciting Drama Department has emerged as a creative and dynamic playground for folks just like you to develop your self-confidence when speaking

If you want to get ahead at work or land a good job, you’ll need the four Cs.

No, we don’t mean your grades should be average–far from it. We mean your crucial traits must include a mastery of the 4 Cs–communication,

collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.

Count to fourThose four traits will become increasingly important to employers in the years ahead, according to a recent American Management Association survey of 2,115 managers. They are foundational skills that will help you win work and win promotions.

The 4 Cs “pretty much apply to anyone’s job, and will stay with you when you move up,” says Manny Avramidis, the American Management Association’s senior vice president of global human resources. They will work for security guards, securities analysts and CEOs.

The AMA defines the 4 Cs this way:

•Communication refers to the ability to effectively express ideas in writing and in speech

•Collaboration means the ability to work with others who may be different from you or have different points of view.

•Critical thinking is the ability to make decisions, solve problems and take appropriate action.

•Creativity refers tobeing innovative and using your imagination to see what’s NOT there and to make something happen.

Why they matterThe 4 Cs are growing in significance because of the pace of change in business and the amount of work that must be accomplished in teams. “I can see them become increasingly more important because the world is getting smaller and smaller,” says

Avramidis, who oversees the hiring and development of some 1,000 AMA staffers around the world.

They are important enough that three-quarters of managers already have started measuring their current staff’s communication skills, critical thinking and collaboration during performance reviews. In about half the cases, workers were considered “only average” in communications and creativity and innovation, the AMA research found.

The 4 Cs and similar lists have been called crucial by other organizations including the Society for Human Resource Management. Yet two-thirds of human resources managers say some new workers lacked critical thinking, self-direction, overall professionalism and written communications skills, all of which are on SHRM’s core competencies lists.

“Being a subject-matter expert is not enough, particularly in a down economy,” says Margo Rose, whose career in human resources has led her to jobs in social media, recruiting for a Cincinnati law firm and establishing Hire Friday on Twitter. “Critical thinking is so important. I define critical thinking as looking at an issue from lots of different viewpoints and...making an informed decision. If (job hunters) can convey

that in a job interview, they’re going to be heads above the rest.”

Learn howStart by grading yourself on your 4 C skills. Then ask a former boss or coworker to be brutally honest in assessing you too. Spend time thinking of occasions when you came up with novel solutions or built a bridge with your words. That will give you some target areas in which you can increase your strengths and reduce weaknesses.

If you’re trying to add more of these into your life and your resume, jump into some activities, such as the debate team or the international business round table or a new fundraiser for your favorite charity.

Here are four other approaches, shared by Avramidis:

• Joinactivitiesthatrequirecommunication and collaboration, and then document them on your resume.

• Chooseclasseswheretheprofessor has built the 4Cs into the coursework, and stay away from basic lecture classes where you never use them.

• Grabaninternshiporpart-timejob to learn in an environment similar to one you may land in full time later on.

• Developyourskillsusingsomenew communication tools, whether IM or ShareSlide or a

social network related to your field. But remember: You need to be able to talk face-to-face too.
