Career Coaching
• This webinar is a practical introductory session covering the non-profit field of career coaching college students.
History
Coaching has a short past but a considerably longer history. The discipline of coaching has man streams that have contributed to its formal beginning and continue to be important to the ongoing development of the field.
Since the mid-1970s, the field of coaching has developed into a more independent discipline.
No Formal Licensure
Coaching, while not yet a field with formal licensure has an emerging and evolving set of training standards. The International Coach Federation (ICF) is a professional association with over 5,000 members and 180 chapters representing countries.
We will touch on other professional career coaching associations later…………......
Making it Simple – Career Coaching
Removes the gap between where one is and where one wants to be
Dr. Kate Brooks
Find solutions rather than analyzing problems. Coaching is all about solutions and actions.
The goal of this webinar is to allow the attendee to better understand and utilize career coaching with traditional and non-traditional college students.
Today’s Path
Career Coaches in this field at the college level target clients that are current students that wish to find their ideal career path, improve their work satisfaction, wishing to change jobs, or successfully make a career change.
Career Search
The difference from career counseling is that instead of relying on standardized tests and analysis coaching enables clients to discover their own answers in a self-discovery decision making process.
Counseling vs. Coaching
Different Mindset
Coaching is not counseling (traditional therapy). Tradition therapy (counseling) involves “providing” a treatment, remedy, and/or “cure” for an underlying problem. Traditional therapy requires training in the mental health field to discover the hidden determinant that are thought of as “deep seated” and underlying the outward emotional and physical manifestation of a presenting problem.
Different Mindset Continued
Coaching , on the other hand, has a different mindset. The coaching process typically involves a client who wants to achieve more and at a faster rate then he or she previously has been able to accomplish. A coaching client usually has a specific outcome he or she wishes to obtain.
Differences
Counseling/Traditional Therapy
•Nurturing/Supportive•Formal•No personal disclosure•Focus on Past and Present•Insight•Process•Medical Model•Problem Focus•Awareness•Weakness•Rehabilitation•Intervention•Exploration

Clients can best answer their own questions to career success with the guidance of career based coaching. Through your Career Coaching style you will see the client’s confidence, courage, and excitement all grow as these answers are unveiled through personal discovery.

Career Development Trends
Over the next decade, demographic and socio-economic forces affecting career and workforce development include an aging and more diverse population, a swelling of the college age population, a highly volatile technological sector of the economy, and a rising premium for postsecondary education.
Know career trends of the country, state and local as you meet the needs of your students.
Mindset Changes
The difference between a dream and a goal is a timeline.
