Two Veteran HCA Leaders Get New Responsibilities

Willie Lawrence, Jr., MD, Honored atCity Council Chambers

On Sept. 1 at the City Council Chambers, Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo, Councilwoman,5th District at Large, and the Kansas City City Council members honored ResearchMedical Center cardiologist, Willie E. Lawrence, Jr., MD, FACC, with Resolution No.

110676, honoring him for being named 2011 Physician of the Year by the AmericanHeart Association.Dr. Lawrence accepted the recognition with a moving speech about the path his careerhas taken, the importance of the American Heart Associations work and achievements, and with personal stories of his family and how they have been touched by heartdisease and stroke. An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Lawrence is the chief of theDivision of Cardiology at Research Medical Center, the director of the MidwestPhysician practice, Midwest Heart Associates, the founder and director of ResearchMedical Centers congestive heart failure program, and the medical director of the hospitals cardiac rehabilitation program.

Division merger creates greater efciency, multi-market operating unit

HCA, which operates 164 hospitals and 111 ambulatory

surgery centers, announced that two veteran HCA division

    presidents are undertaking new responsibilities.

Stephen E. Corbeil, who has been

    President of the companys Midwest

Division in Kansas City since 2007, will

    become President of HCAs Nashville-

based TriStar Division. He replaces Larry

    Kloess, whose retirement was announced

earlier this month. In addition, HCA

    veteran and longtime Delta Division

President Mel Lagarde will become President of HCAs

newly-named MidAmerica Division, based in Kansas

City. This division includes the companys existing DeltaDivision (based in New Orleans) and Midwest Division

operations. HCA will maintain a market presence in the

New Orleans area with certain division staff based there.

    These transitions will begin immediately.

The merger of Delta and Midwest, two of our smaller

divisions, makes sense for a number of reasons, said Paul

Rutledge, President of HCAs Central Group. Joining

the two divisions enables us to improve efciency while

continuing to support our hospitals and creating a

multi-market operating unit similar to most other HCA

    divisions.

Steve and Mel are veteran HCA division presidents with

proven track records as outstanding multi-hospital leaders,

said Rutledge. Their familiarity with HCAs culture willserve them well in their new roles.

As MidAmerica Division President, Lagarde, 54, is

responsible for HCAs 18 hospitals and six ambulatory

surgery centers in Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana and

Mississippi. A 32-year employee of HCA, Lagarde served

since 1995 as President of HCAs Delta Division, which at

one point included HCAs operations in Austin and Corpus

Christi. Prior to that, Lagarde was Chief Operating Ofcer

of HCAs Gulf Coast Division in Texas from 1994 to 1995.

He also served in various hospital leadership positions at

several HCA hospitals in Georgia, Virginia and Texas.

In his new role leading TriStar, Corbeil, 51, is responsible

for the divisions 17 hospitals and nine surgery centers in

Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky, including seven facilities

in HCAs hometown market of Middle Tennessee. Prior to

returning to HCA in 2007 to become President of HCAs

Midwest Division, Corbeil held several senior-level, multi-

market leadership positions with Tenet Healthcare. Before

that, he was CEO of HCAs Medical City Dallas Hospital

    from 1996 to 2000.

As the nations largest non-government supporter of breast cancer research nationwide,

the American Cancer Society has funded $323 million in breast cancer research grants

since 1972 and has been an important part of nearly every major breast cancer research

breakthrough of the past century. Funds raised through this event will support thiscritical breast cancer research and support programs and services the society provides to

improve the quality of life and chances of survival for cancer patients right here, in our

Adopt-A-FamilyThe Holiday Season is fast approaching. Our economy is stable but fragile and hopefully our 401Ks have stabilized (at least

some). Without your help, many of our Research Medical Center co-workers and their families will experience a very meager

holiday season this year. We are appealing to your heart as much as your pocketbook when we ask for your help. Your

generosity and bountiful spirit made it possible for many Research Medical Center families to enjoy and celebrate holidays

past. Last year over 25 Research Medical Center families beneted from the collective generosity of 25 departments and

    physician partners. Many thanks!

We are now planning Research Medical Centers 2011 Adopt-A-Family program. If you and those in your department areinterested in helping our families, including those who work at the Research Brookside Campus, contact your supervisor,

department director, unit chaplain, or the Pastoral Care department at 276-4120. All interested departments and individuals

must respond by November 11. This will allow ample time to collect gifts and food. Distribution will be Friday, Dec, 16, at

    the main campus.

If you are a Research Medical Center employee who would like to be considered for adoption, you may pick-up a nomination

form in the Pastoral Care ofce, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nomination forms need to be

completed and returned to the Pastoral Care ofce by November 11. All family adoptions are managed condentially.
