Graphic communication can be described 'what human beings leave behind to communicate when they are no longer there in person' or 'Words, images and sometimes sound used to communicate meaning to a specific audience in order to elicit a pre-determined response, to inform, persuade, provoke or entertain'. As graphic communicators, we are tasked with putting ideas across and creating resonance in others’ minds, leaving them room to make the meaning. We have a number of ways of getting the message across or‘visualising what we are thinking’, in memorable and meaningful ways. Graphic (or visual) language is built from words and images, the synthesis of whichcreates meaning. There are three component parts: Verbal - typographic, textural, using words; Pictorial - photographs, drawings, illustration: and Schematic - maps, diagrams, charts. These are often combined within a variety of formats including: books or magazines: moving image such as video or animation; ambient media, exhibitions or installations;signage systems and packaging. Underpinning the technical skills used to create work on behalf of clients is the belief at Cardiff that the ‘idea’ is paramount, and that understanding ‘why?’ is as important as ‘how?’ The most memorable ideas in society are often communicated by storytelling or a compelling narrative, using visual metaphors. Graphic designers use their knowledge of semiotics, psychology and visual rhetoric to explain, and communicate authentically onbehalf of their clients to achieve the desired response. This can be to clearly inform or direct, to promote a business a service or a product or to change behaviour. Visual communication is a very powerful medium that can influence and sway opinion, which is why at Cardiff the thrust is to educate designers to be agents for change, to be mindful innovators who are conscious of the role they play in fashioning the future. We know that technical skills are only part of the picture; an emphasis on strong ideas is what makes our course award-winning. Our students have the support of industry mentors and an enviable network of employers and past graduates leading the field in companies, locally and internationally. It’s a broad course that leaves room for each student to be challenged by new ways of thinking and also to tailor their particular route by the choices they make. In the first year we concentrate on Graphic (or visual) language, built from words and images, the synthesis of which creates meaning. The second year brings opportunities to work on briefs with clients and consider target audiences, to address the question of who the designer is in society. In the final year, students engage in specialist briefs and competitions, which enable them to make decisions about their exit strategy, where they want to work, or go on to postgraduate study.
