No doubt you would like to look at our facilities and the Llandaff campus and find out more about accommodation, transport in the city and finances. This year we will be holding three BIG INTERVIEW EVENTS in our new building. The aims are to welcome candidates applying for places, give you the information you need, and to conduct interviews. We will have a lot to show you and will be able to answer all the nitty gritty questions about studying with us and living in Cardiff. Students on this course are not pre-determined to be either artists or designers, so they can permeate the boundaries with ease. In the second year, as well a s continuing with your skills acquisition and development we will give you a wide range of choices in your Field Module. You may elect to undertake a work placement, build a business plan, study with one of our professors, become part of an experimental project, or travel to abroad. The choice is yours. In the third year, you will continue to develop your skills and techniques, now at an advance level. You will produce either a thesis or a business plan.This variety of skills and experience provide graduates with a breadth of knowledge required for the modern economy, and are capable of working in a myriad of creative careers. Graduates can expect to pursue careers in many areas of making: as a sole practitioner in the crafts, as a designer- makers in any of the materials listed, as a sculptor, or model maker for film or theatre. With our MIT endorsed Fab Lab, our graduates digital skills will be industry standard and they can work in interaction design, 3D modeling, animatronics, or exploit the potential of 3D printing either as a designer or service provider. Each year a number of graduates will continue to pursue careers in education either as educators themselves or as academic researchers. With innovation at its core, the programme enables students not only to appropriate and manipulate existing materials, processes and technologies, but also to create new ones through research and creative, hands-on experimentation. Students learn how to research and develop an idea into a fully realised outcome - whether this is a functional product, an artefact, an installation or an expressive object. Making is undergoing a revolution , many cite it as the next Industrial revolution fuelled by the “factory of one”. With our philosophy, course structure and resources we can equip our graduates to become “a factory of one” This revolution is not about technology, it is about convergences between the traditional and the digital, fine art & design and the personal convergence between the head, hand and heart. In your first module you will be introduced to materials including, metal, ceramics , glass, textiles, wood, plastics , paper, resins, covering a multitude of processes and applications, these traditional materials are augmented with new technologies, including 3D printing, laser cutting, scanning, basic programming, Arduino and Augmented Reality, enabling interesting object - user/viewer interaction. To identify which creative path might be suitable for you, you undertake modules which are about context and collaboration. This helps you to understand how to apply your material knowledge in the real world, and also helps to identify your role within a working team. Professional artists and designers need excellent studiosand workshops and that’s what we provide. We havedesigned a proper place to do art and design. You can use almosteverything and anything we have available from digitalstitch and plaster moulding to our metal foundry or ourrapid prototyping workshops. Your studies are built around three fundamental aspectsof what it is to be an Artist, Maker, or Designer: yourunique skills; your creative ideas; and your ability tocontextualise these in a professional situation.

A third of your studies are about developing core skillsand techniques and about identifying what makes yourpersonal creative identity valuable, unique and different.At least 50% of your studies will be delivered throughteaching. We believe it is important that you are taught instudios and workshops by academic and technicalexperts who will give you the individual attention youneed to build a sustainable career.

A third of your studies are about exploring how and whyand if the world came to be as it is and how it might be re-thought or re-imagined. At Cardiff School of Art & Designyou can choose to develop a way of thinking that suitsyou best, by choosing your history and theory seminargroup.
