such as the Design Museum and also exhibitionopportunities to showcase ongoing work. Students onthis course are not pre-determined to be either artists ordesigners, so they can permeate the boundaries withease. In the second year, as well a s continuing with yourskills acquisition and development we will give you awide range of choices in your Field Module. You mayelect to undertake a work placement, build a businessplan, study with one of our professors, become part of anexperimental project, or travel to abroad. The choice isyours. In the third year, you will continue to develop yourskills and techniques, now at an advance level. You willproduce either a thesis or a business plan.This variety ofskills and experience provide graduates with a breadth ofknowledge required for the modern economy, and arecapable of working in a myriad of creative careers.

Graduates can expect to pursue careers in many areas ofmaking: as a sole practitioner in the crafts, as a designer-makers in any of the materials listed, as a sculptor, ormodel maker for film or theatre.

With our MIT endorsed Fab Lab, our graduates digitalskills will be industry standard and they can work ininteraction design, 3D modeling, animatronics, or exploitthe potential of 3D printing either as a designer or serviceprovider.

Each year a number of graduates will continue to pursuecareers in education either as educators themselves or asacademic researchers.

Artist Designer: Maker spans the handmade to themanufactured object and uses innovation and inventionto produce professional makers, designing for an ever-changing world.

With innovation at its core, the programme enablesstudents not only to appropriate and manipulate existingmaterials, processes and technologies, but also to createnew ones through research and creative, hands-onexperimentation. Students learn how to research anddevelop an idea into a fully realised outcome - whetherthis is a functional product, an artefact, an installation oran expressive object. Making is undergoing a revolution ,many cite it as the next Industrial revolution fuelled by the

“factory of one”. With our philosophy, course structureand resources we can equip our graduates to become “afactory of one”

This revolution is not about technology, it is aboutconvergences between the traditional and the digital,fine art & design and the personal convergence betweenthe head, hand and heart. In your first module you will beintroduced to materials including, metal, ceramics , glass,textiles, wood, plastics , paper, resins, covering amultitude of processes and applications, these traditionalmaterials are augmented with new technologies,including 3D printing, laser cutting, scanning, basicprogramming, Arduino and Augmented Reality, enablinginteresting object - user/viewer interaction.

To identify which creative path might be suitable for you,you undertake modules which are about context andcollaboration. This helps you to understand how to applyyour material knowledge in the real world, and also helpsto identify your role within a working team. Our entrance expectations (UCAS 300pts) andrigorous, but friendly, interview processes create anexpert community of students who are serious about theirstudies in art and design. Each studies a programme designed to put themat the centre of their experience, with opportunities totravel and explore ideas in real depth.

Aside from being highly qualified and expert lecturers,our staff are leading researchers and practicing artists anddesigners. Cardiff School of Art & Design is the home of anumber of international standard research departments.You will have the opportunity to work on many of theseresearch projects and even to publish your own researchbefore you graduate.

Professional artists and designers need excellent studiosand workshops and that’s what we provide. We havedesigned a proper place to do art and design. Come toone of our visit days and see what we mean when we sayour new building is an ideas and creative factory, withextensive workshops and resources. You can use almosteverything and anything we have available from digitalstitch and plaster moulding to our metal foundry or ourrapid prototyping workshops. We are also home to theonly MIT FabLab in a UK University. Come to one of ouropen days and see what we mean.

Your studies are built around three fundamental aspectsof what it is to be an Artist, Maker, or Designer: yourunique skills; your creative ideas; and your ability tocontextualise these in a professional situation.

A third of your studies are about developing core skillsand techniques and about identifying what makes yourpersonal creative identity valuable, unique and different.At least 50% of your studies will be delivered throughteaching. We believe it is important that you are taught instudios and workshops by academic and technicalexperts who will give you the individual attention youneed to build a sustainable career.

A third of your studies are about exploring how and whyand if the world came to be as it is and how it might be re-thought or re-imagined. At Cardiff School of Art & Designyou can choose to develop a way of thinking that suitsyou best, by choosing your history and theory seminargroup. Each of these is lead by brilliant historiansphilosophers and theoreticians.

The other third of your studies are about collaborationand exploration. You have the chance to explore outsideof the University, to form life-long collaborations or evenbusiness partnerships.
