The Cardboard Citizens’ Friends Scheme

Be Part of Our Story

Who are we?

Cardboard Citizens is a unique charity that has been making life-changing theatre with and for homeless people for 22 years. We create great theatre that makes a real and positive difference to our society and those living on its margins. We are the UK’s leading practitioners of the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology.Every year Cardboard Citizens effects change by:

• Presenting plays performed by homeless and displaced people, to share experiences and problem-solve together

• Producing high quality work for general audiences so that a wider public can share in the Company’s learning and understand the issues facing marginalised people

• Enabling participants to develop skills, qualifications and confidence through workshops, performances and accredited training

• Supporting participants’ practical needs in matters of housing, education, employment, health and personal development

• Working in partnership with arts and social sector organisations to widen the reach of the Company’s work and underpin its support for participants

The Friends SchemeCardboard Citizens has been at the forefront of telling untold stories for over 20 years. We bring stories from other worlds to the stage; stories that help their tellers get a handle on their lives. These stories often have homeless protagonists at the centre who could be any one of us, with a little bit of bad luck.

We invite you to become part of the Cardboard Citizens story by supporting us in using theatre to transform the lives of even more people with experience of homelessness.

You can support Cardboard Citizens by joining the Friends Scheme and committing to a regular donation. Simply fill in the form on the back on this brochure and follow the instructions to return it to us. Your regular donation will allow us to plan for the future with confidence.

In addition to joining the Friends Scheme there are lots of other ways that you can help us. For example, by offering contacts who can offer pro bono support, by giving your time to bring your friends to our events and performances, or by holding a fundraising event on our behalf.

For more information please contact Rachel Tiley, Events and Donor Development Manager on [email protected] if you are interested in this kind of support.

Why dowe need

your help?In 2012-13 Cardboard Citizens made some exciting developments, leading to unprecedented success in many areas of our work. We moved to Whitechapel, where our new premises enable us, for the first time, to deliver all our core activities under one roof. Already we have seen an increase in the number of Members coming to workshops, support sessions and social events, and have enjoyed hosting partners and supporters keen to see our work up close. We also held a governance review, establishing a Development Committee and recruiting 4 new Trustees, each with specific skill sets geared towards supporting the organisation’s future. All this has helped us to:

• Reach over 3,300 audience members through four theatre productions

• Give 1,247 homeless individuals the chance to experience high quality theatre, and engage in active debate and problem-solving through our Forum Theatre Tour

• Enable 660 individuals to develop their creative skills through performing arts workshops

• Support Cardboard Citizens Members to achieve 124 qualifications or training and employment outcomes

• Progress 114 Cardboard Citizens Members onto education, employment or training opportunities with our support

• Train 281 professionals to use Theatre of the Oppressed and other creative techniques to enhance their practice

Cardboard Citizens occupies a unique space in the arts and social sector. Over the next few years, we are seeking to ensure that many more people know about our work as the UK’s leading organisation for engaging and telling the stories of excluded people through transformative theatre.

We aim to do this, by making more theatre as well as maximising the support of our network. This will allow us to increase our reach and improve the methods that we use to build relationships with people who are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness, as well as new supporters, partners and our stakeholders.

Over the next three years we would like people like you to become more involved in our organisation, to help us achieve our ambition and to change the perception of homelessness and excluded people in our society.
