BLACK KNOT DISEASE

There are many trees and shrubs in the Village that are infected by Black Knot disease. This fungus will continue to grow and will release spores that will infect neighboring trees.

The Village of Carbon suggests that you prune or have these trees removed to minimize further spread of the disease. They can be hauled to Clay Hill (West of Elgin Avenue & South of Hwy. 836). Please dispose of the diseased limbs inside the marked area with caution tape. This area is for diseased black knot trees and shrubs ONLY.

The Carbon Fire Department will be burning the diseased limbs on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

Early spring or late fall is a good time for seeing the infection and pruning. To ensure termination of the disease spreading, cut the limb a minimum of 8 inches below the infected area. Use a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water to clean your tools between cuts to avoid spreading the disease.

More information can be found on the Government of Alberta’s website at: https://www.alberta.ca/black-knot.aspx
