    March29,2013LosAngeles,Calif.ViolenceintheCentralAfricanRepublic(CAR)continuesfollowing

    arebel-ledseizureofthecapitalcity,Bangui.HavingoperatedinCARsince2007,InternationalMedical

    Corps, in coordination with the United Nations (UN) and other non-governmental organizations, is

    conductingamulti-sectoralassessmenttodeterminetheextentofhumanitarianneeds.

    TheoverallsituationinBanguihasimprovedwithincreasedwatersupplyandsomesupplyofelectricitythroughoutthecity.However,itwasreportedthatlootingisstilloccurringthroughoutthecityincluding

    athealthfacilities.

    InternationalMedicalCorpshasinitiatedahumanitarianassessmentofelevenhealthfacilitiesinBangui

    - some facilities reported that personnel have fled their postsdue to the conflict. The organization

    assessedonehealthfacilitytodayandfoundthewater,sanitationandhygieneconditionstobevery

    poor. InternationalMedicalCorpssecured9basichealthkits,22malariakitsand1caesariankit from

    WHO. Eachbasichealthkit canserve1,000peoplefor3months.Thekitswillbedistributedtohealth

    facilities that are lacking basic essential drugs in areas where internally displaced people were

    reported. InternationalMedicalCorpswilldistributeseveralkitstomorrowtoahealthcenterinoneof

    Banguissuburbsthatwascompletelylooted.

    PoorroadinfrastructureinandaroundBanguiandrebelblockadeshavefurtherimpededthedeliveryof

    essentialsuppliestoalreadydifficult-to-reachareasoutsidethecapital.InternationalMedicalCorpsis

    greatlyconcernedthattheriskoffoodinsecuritywillincreaseasthecountryisfurtherdestabilizedand

    suppliesrun low.InternationalMedicalCorpsteamsarecontinuing basichealthand nutrition service

    deliveryinBambari,Triningulu,Sekekede,BriaandBirao.TheorganizationiscoordinatingwiththeUN

    tosecuretransportationofsuppliessothattheprovisionofbasicservicescancontinueintheseareas.

    InternationalMedicalCorps globalsecurity team ismonitoringthe situationcloselyand ensuring the

    utmostsafetyofstaff.Withsignificanthumanitarianneedsalreadyinthecountryandthelikelihoodof

    civiliansexperiencinggreaterhardshipasaresultofthefighting,InternationalMedicalCorpshopesfora

    swiftcessationofviolencesothatcriticallyneededrelieftovulnerablepopulationscanbeimplemented.

    International Medical Corps began working in CAR primarily in the insecure northern and eastern

    provinces.Today,theorganizationsservicesincludematernalandchild health care, child protection,

    nutrition services, HIV/AIDS prevention, health education, gender-based violence prevention and

    response,andhygienepromotionactivities.
