A few highlights: Our Formation Program is growing with men in California on their journey to perpetual profession and/or priesthood as a Capuchin. We ministered to thousands through hospital and prison chaplaincies, parish, education, and other ministries. Our ministry in Northern Mexico continues to expand. It began serving several villages in 1985 and is now a ‘Custody’ which is a significant step towards becoming its own Province. Your past support of our ANNUAL FUND has been instrumental in our ability to assist those in need. At this time, we ask for your participation in the 2016 ANNUAL FUND. Every gift makes a critical difference in the lives of those we service. Our Annual Appeal gives us an opportunity to work together in the name of Christ’s mercy. Your gift to the 2016 ANNUAL FUND will directly assist our efforts in the following areas: Provide Chaplaincy services to support people in need of spiritual comfort and direction. Assist our students in Formation to the priesthood and ministry by helping with their education and living expenses. Support retirement and nursing home care for our elder friars and health insurance premiums for all friars. Basic operational expenses of our Province. Provide the Mass, sacraments, and other spiritual needs in Northern Mexico, a Custody of our Province. Since we are using this Winter edition of the CAPUCHIN WEST newsletter to combine with our Annual Appeal mailing, your gift is maximized. We have eliminated the cost of a separate brochure and additional mailing costs. Your contribution to the ANNUAL FUND enables us to continue our ongoing ministries. All gifts, regardless of amount, are greatly appreciated. For your convenience, an Annual Fund donation return envelope is provided. Capuchin Franciscans 2016 Annual Fund

The past year has been a very exciting one for the Capuchin Franciscans of the Western America Province. A few highlights:

• Our Formation Program is growing with men in California on their journey to perpetual profession and/or priesthood as a Capuchin.

• We ministered to thousands through hospital and prison chaplaincies, parish, education, and other ministries.

• Our ministry in Northern Mexico continues to expand.

Your gift to the 2016 ANNUAL FUND will directly assist our efforts in the following areas: • Provide Chaplaincy services to support people in need

of spiritual comfort and direction.• Assist our students in Formation to the priesthood and

ministry by helping with their education and living expenses.

• Support retirement and nursing home care for our elder friars and health insurance premiums for all friars.

• Basic operational expenses of our Province.• Provide the Mass, sacraments, and other spiritual

needs in Northern Mexico, a Custody of our Province.

You may also donate online at www.olacapuchins.org, or call our Capuchin Development Office at (650) 347-1505.

FIRST CAPUCHIN FLOAT DEBUTED IN

COLUMBUS DAY PARADE AS BROTHERS STEP ONTO THE

STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO During a bright, sunny California day, the Capuchin Brothers of the Western America Province, Our Lady of Angels, stepped onto the streets of North Beach, marking new Capuchin history and launching the first Califor-nia parade float representing The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and the Capuchin Franciscan Order on Sunday, October 9, 2016. As the Blue Angels roared high in the sky over Embar-cadero's riverfront and sail boats and ships floated in the Bay during Fleet Week, the crisp air filled with sounds and beats of marching bands, colorful views of energetic baton throwers and rhythmic dance ensembles, waves of multi-cultural flags, and a new Capuchin Franciscan float.

While artistically designed parade entries passed by pe-destrians positioned curbside, a vivid line-up of heritage floats including a San Fran cable car sequentially lined the street in a myriad of red, white, and green shades in Italian scheme. Restaurant dining tables dressed with pasta plates and fine wine in North Beach also punctuated Columbus Street’s sidewalks.

What could this be? None other than the 148th Italian Her-itage Columbus Day Parade held in North Beach section of San Fran marking the oldest and continuously hosted historic parade in America! Continued on page 9

St. Francis Transitus Celebration

CAPUCHIN FRANCISCANSPrayer is the cornerstone of Capuchin Formation, drawing each friar into a closer relationship with his brothers in community.“Our Brother Francis followed a calling that changed his life and the world.” Have you heard the same call?

GENERAL STAGES OF CAPUCHIN FORMATION

STAGE 1: DISCERNMENT/CANDIDACY: At this stage, candidates who are interested in Capuchin life are introduced to the friars through visits and discernment retreats, meeting the friars at the Capuchin novitiate and other houses, and hearing from the friars themselves what Capuchin Franciscan life is all about. Those who feel a call to Capuchin life are invited to apply for postulancy.

STAGE 2: POSTULANCY: This is the first stage of formation, usually about ten months in length, and takes place at the Capuchin friary in Berkeley. Postulants learn more about the Capuchin Franciscan Order by living and working with the friars, praying with the community and ministering to the poor. Postulants also participate in classes to learn more about the faith, religious life, and St. Francis and his Order. Postulants may also take classes at local colleges.

STAGE 3: NOVITIATE: At this stage, the postulants are clothed in the Capuchin Franciscan habit and begin a year of intense prayer and discernment at San Lorenzo Friary in Santa Ynez, California. For a year the novice is involved in prayer, study, fraternal life and a limited ministry, all meant to help him decide if the Lord is calling him to make a commitment to God as a Capuchin friar. At the end of the year, the novices who are accepted profess their first vows as Capuchins and leave San Lorenzo to continue their formation.

STAGE 4: POST-NOVITIATE: For a period of at least three years the friars in temporary vows continue their formation in the San Francisco Bay Area, at St. Conrad Friary in Berkeley. Here they continue to deepen their understanding of Franciscan life and values. This time includes study, ministry, and a full life of communal and contemplative prayer. Part of this period of formation is spent in one of the friaries of California or Northern Mexico. At the end of this period of formation, those who feel called apply for final (solemn) vows, a lifetime commitment to serve the Lord as a Capuchin Franciscan friar.

PREPARATION FOR MINISTRY: Those friars who are called to the priesthood study philosophy and theology at the Dominican School, part of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Depending on the individual’s inclinations and abilities, as well as the needs of the Province, a friar in formation may study other academic areas, learn a trade, or prepare himself in other ways to help them serve God’s people.

Provincial Message Dear Brothers and Sisters, Peace and Good! "All those seeking mercy should find it, if only they look into your eyes." This is what St. Francis told his friars, and this is what he tried to live himself. Whether in the remote villages of Northern Mexico, the noisy streets of Watts, or even during the bustle of a Columbus Day Capuchin parade float in San Francisco, our friars meet so many hungering for an experi-ence of God's mercy. As St. Francis told us, we try to respond with kindness, courtesy and compassion. Yet the reality is that so often it is we who learn from others what it means to be merciful.

When our Brother Gregory Coiro was recently preparing to encounter Sister Death, the outpouring of love and compas-sion was overwhelming. So many friends and benefactors were generous in their support of Greg, his family (especially his dear mother Terry), and of us, his Capuchin brothers during his final days. In their name, I truly thank you.

This support and love was then followed by additional out-pourings of love months later honoring Fr. Kevin Bertram, age 94 and residing at Oakland’s Mercy Care Center who was called to the Lord; and once again, for our vibrant and energetic Northern Mexico priest Fr. Agnel Colaco from Goa, India, who passed in October suddenly with health complica-tions. (Please see pages 10-12, for memorials.)

On November 20, we celebrated the closing of 'The Year of Mercy' proclaimed by Pope Francis. But in a very real sense, of course, the season of mercy never ends especially as the Christmas season nears, we begin a New Year and season of our lives. Our Capuchin brothers continue striving to be instruments of God's compassion.

With the work of Fr. David Beaumont among the indigenous tribes of northern Mexico, the ministry of welcome and prayer of Fr. John De La Riva at the National Shrine of St. Francis, the community of brothers at Old Mission Santa Inés, Watts’ St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Burlingame’s Our Lady of Angels Parish, hospital & prison chaplains, teachers and staff at St. Francis High School and Vocations, the outreach of all our friars continues because of your prayers and generous support.

This holiday season and in the year, your Capuchin Francis-can brothers lift you and your needs up in our prayers, asking that you may always experience the great divine Mercy and know the help of Our Lady of Angels and St. Francis in your daily lives!

May the Lord bless you and keep you! Blessings in the New

Our Model of Mercy His name was Francis of Assisi, and he used to praise God, the Artist in every one of God’s works. Whatever joy he found in things made, he referred to their maker. He rejoiced in all the works of God’s hands. Everything cried out to him, “He who made us is infinitely good!” He called animals “brother” or “sister,” and he exhorted them to praise God. He would go through the streets and byways, inviting everyone to sing with him. And one time when he came upon an almond tree, he said, “Brother Almond, speak to me of God.” And the almond tree blossomed.

That is what Saint Francis of Assisi did, and that is what he does for us once we are caught up in his life and teachings. He makes us blossom, wherever and whoever we are. We blossom because we see in Francis what could happen to us if we were to embrace the overflowing goodness of God revealed in everything that exists, and let that embrace change us. Reprint, excerpts by Pat McCloskey, OFM

The newly christened Capuchin float featured a St. Fran-cis statue as its focal point teamed with a variety of spring flowers. This vision for design along with a new opportu-nity for community was born from the Capuchin fraterni-ty and witness beginning the exact moment friar hands, hammer and nails hit the wood. The float design created was a modest ‘wagon on wheels’ push-float that ultimate-ly carried ‘Capuchin Franciscan spirituality’ throughout the city on this Sunday afternoon.

Carpentry Hands at Work: Br. Peter Ciolino, OFM Cap, and Guardian at the Capuchin Berkeley Student House, with Shrine Rector Fr. John’s vision of design, and assistance from several student friars brought this beautiful float entry to life for the spirited Shrine float using carpentry skills sprinkled with much love and care.

Artistic Flair: The religious float featured a two-tiered push-cart blanketed with bright flowers and an Italian flag design adorning its top. Its lower tier carpeted by white and yellow tall-stemmed florals signified the Vatican flag. Prominently crowned by the beloved statue of St. Francis of Assisi with outstretched arms and blessings for all at its appex, the spirit of St. Francis gleamed from the eyes of many onlookers. As the Capuchin float travelled block to block, time and time again, the joyous crowds clapped as cheers met Capuchin Brothers as the image of St. Francis toured by parade stands. Lead by a vintage embroidered St. Francis banner from the historical Shrine archives, brown-robed friars flanked the spiritual float and marched in formation down Embarcadero and Columbus streets for its premiere.

Special thanks to Angela Testani, a Shrine supporter and Capuchin friend, for sponsoring the float florals for our very first Capuchin 2016 parade entry.

Also ‘trooping the colors in brotherly love’, The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and the Capuchin student friars William Cisneros, Victor Taglianetti, Nikolas Barth, and Alex Rodriguez and new Postulant Austin Cambon who are much appreciated for their pageantry and event support. These Brothers greatly assisted Fr. John De La Riva, OFM Cap., Shrine Rector, bringing the witness of St. Francis and joy to the streets while celebrating a festive day for both Columbus and St. Francis in the famous ‘City by the Bay’.

Well loved by many, Fr. Greg had a brilliant mind and

sharp wit coupled with wonderful musical ability as an

organist and classical music enthusiast, especially of

old hymns. He enjoyed teaching and helped found the

Kairos High School Retreats at St. Francis High School

too. Excellent at media relations for the LA Archdiocese of

LA, Fr. Greg loved his faith and had a gift of teaching and

Fr. Kevin Bertram Mulligan, OFM Cap(June 15, 1922 - October 29, 2016)

Fr. Bertram Mulligan was born in Dundalk, Co. Louth,

Ireland on June 15, 1922, the son of Joseph Mulligan

and Margaret Watters. His baptismal name was Kevin

and his religious name was Bertram. After entering the

Capuchin Franciscan Order in in October of 1941, he

made his Solemn Vows on October 4, 1945, and was later

ordained a priest on June 16, 1949. He was sent from

Ireland to serve as Associate Pastor at St. Joseph Church

in Roseburg, Oregon then later served as associate

Pastor at St. Mary’s in Ukiah, CA, and Our Lady of Angels

in Hermiston, Oregon. Next as Pastor, he served at St.

Aloysius in Point Arena, CA; Our Lady of Good Counsel

in Fort Bragg, CA; St. Mary’s in Ukiah, CA; Our Lady of

Angels in Burlingame, CA; and St. Joseph in Roseburg,

Oregon.

After parish ministry, Fr. Bertram served in hospital

chaplaincy at the VA Hospital in Fresno, CA, and was

appointed the first Guardian of St. Francis of Assisi Friary

in Burlingame, CA. In 1998, he was named Provincial

Archivist for the Western America Province. In 2007, he

retired at Mercy Care Retirement Center in Oakland, CA,

where he died on October 29, 2016.

Bertram was a tranquil man born from a deep inner

peace and strength that came from his life of prayer.

Humble, gentle, unassuming, kind, and patient were the

best adjectives to describe his demeanor as he embodied

the definition of what a true gentleman could be. He was

fraternal, hospitable, courteous, and a caring person to

all and most especially for the elderly friars and the sick.

Bertram had a special place in his heart for Mendocino

County where he served for many years and he loved his

family in Ireland and enjoyed many visits with them.

Fr. Bertram wrote once: “There’s something of God in

everything and in everyone we see. I pray for the grace to

see Him in others and hope they will see Him in me.”

Fr. Kevin Bertram is survived by his brother Aidan

Mulligan and his sister Marie McDonell. He is

predeceased by his brothers Dermot, Patrick, Niall, and

his sister Sr. Alice.

I see His blood upon the rose And in the stars the glory of His eyes His body gleams amid eternal snows,

His tears fall from the skies.

I see His face in every flower; The thunder and the singing of the birds

Are but His voice – and carven by His power Rocks are His written words.

All pathways by His feet are worn,

His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea His crown of thorns

is twined with every thorn, His cross is every tree.

Padre Agnel Colaco, OFM Cap(1976-2016)

Fr. Agnel arrived at our postulant house in Durango, Durango Mexico in April 2016 and we must share the sad news that our dear Brother Agnel passed suddenly in late October suffering a heart attack, and was not able to be saved by operation. A severely damaged heart and blockage of arteries was discovered by doctors

in a hospital in Northern Mexico, Custody after the attack. Prayers for the repose of Brother Agnel’s soul and consolation of his dear family and brothers from Goa, India, and his Capuchin Brothers in the Northern Mexico Custody and Western America Province are with him. Brother Agnel was a shining light of to us in the Custody. He spoke many languages including Porteguese, Spanish and his native tongue of India. Agnel was a quiet, honest, responsible, and respectful person but very fraternal and often joked with the Brothers. He was spiritual, and a pious friar lending wisdom and counsel. What impressed many of his Brothers was his willingness to do whatever was asked of him, and he carried an energetic presence of mission work in Northern Mexico. What especially surprised many within the community too was his skill in sports like volley ball and soccer, the latter he may have taken up if given the opportunity. When asked to cook a meal for a community, Agnel would be heard on the phone with his aunt in India who directed him on how exactly to season fish-sauce to complement cooked rice with sardines he was serving the friars that evening. Always delicious, Agnel shared many of his cultural gifts with us always in giving ways. We thank the Province of Goa and his family for the blessing of his missionary presence here and pray for his eternal rest. May the Good Lord lead him in joy to the peace of Paradise. We will miss our Brother Agnel but know that his spirit is still with us and will be present always in our hearts. May our Lord bless Brother Agnel and grant him eternal rest. Amen. Requiescat in pace!

THE HISTORY OF THE CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN ORDER is as inspiring as the man who founded it. St. Francis

was a man of vision, a man of peace. Through his example, countless numbers have been drawn into service through

a love of God. And through the centuries, they have helped to shape the world in significant ways.

CAPUCHIN FRANCISCANS seek to continue the ministry St. Francis of Assisi began, tending to any and all in need.

At this time, let me introduce a new fund to honor Capuchin Brothers over the century, inspired by the past and dedicated to the future.

CROSS TALK – the Jerusalem Cross

The cross first appeared on the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the Crusades. It has since been adopted by many Christian denominations to symbolize the universal nature of the message of Christ. The large cross in the center stands for Christ, and the four small crosses stand for the four Gospels proclaimed by the four corners of the earth. In this symbol, Christ is both the messenger and the message.

Feast of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Sunday, November 20, 2016 marked the close

of the Extraordinary Year of Mercy which began on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 2015. The Holy Year is traditionally a year of forgiveness of sins and also the punishment merited by one’s sins. As a year of reconciliation between enemies, conversion and receiving the Sacrament of Reconcilliation, masses were celebrated in the CFWA Province throughout California.

His Excellency, Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, concelebrated the mass at The National Shrine in San Francisco on

November 20 with Capuchin Brothers marking a special occasion for the Shrine community served by the Capuchins.

His Excellency also delivered the last presentation of the Cathedral Speaker Series devoted to the Jubilee on November 19 noting this was an Extraordinary Year proclaimed by Pope Francis, because it fell outside of the Church’s 25 - year cycle explaining the opening of the Holy Doors a year ago carried a profound significance and their closing now is also full of symbolism. Ultimately, “Christ is the door, and access to eternal life and Paradise”, His Excellency noted.

The Beautiful Hands of a Priest

We need them in life's early morning,

We need them again at its close;

We feel their warm clasp of true friendship,

We seek it while tasting life's woes.

When we come to this world we are sinful,

The greatest as well as the least.

And the hands that make us pure as angels

Are the beautiful hands of a priest.

At the altar each day we behold them,

And the hands of a king on his throne

Are not equal to them in their greatness

Their dignity stands alone.

For there in the stillness of morning

Ere the sun has emerged from the east,

There God rests between the pure fingers

Of the beautiful hands of a priest.

When we are tempted and wander

To pathways of shame and sin

'Tis the hand of a priest that absolve us.

Not once but again and again.

And when we are taking life's partner

Other hands may prepare us a feast

But the hands that will bless and unite us,

Are the beautiful hands of a priest.

God bless them and keep them all holy,

For the Host which their fingers caress,

What can a poor sinner do better

Than to ask Him who chose them to bless

When the death dews on our lids are falling,

May our courage and strength be increased

By seeing raised o'er us in blessing

The beautiful hands of a priest.

My Pilgrimage Trip during the Jubilee Year of MercyReflections by Rodney Esperanza Assistant, The National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco

This autumn, I was blessed to travel to Europe

with the purpose of attending events and visiting

specific sites related to the Jubilee Year of Mercy

2016. Having travelled to the continent several times

before but not during a Jubilee year, I was determined

this journey would enhance my spirituality and broaden

my exposure to the world of the Franciscans by seeing

locations specifically associated with Saint Francis and

Saint Clare.

After a brief visit in Berlin, Germany, I completed a

day’s rail trip to Lourdes, France, where I explored the

Sanctuary and the Grotto of the apparition. The high

season for tourists had passed so these holy settings were

conducive to quiet and meditation. It was my first time

at the Marian Shrine and an opportunity even presented

itself that I was actually able to enter the baths twice. A

personal exercise was to frame in prayer the Lady of the

Immaculate Conception’s message of “penance” within

the theme of Mercy which Pope Francis called us to

respond.

I spent a reflective two days in Assisi, Italy, and

wandered the Basilicas of Francis, Clare, and Santa

Maria degli Angeli that contains the very Porziuncola

that was beloved to Francis. The preservation of the

town’s character and its elevation above a bucolic plain

definitely aided the visitor’s mind to picture the medieval

period in which these two beloved saints lived. The

humble church of San Damiano sat below the town

proper, down a steep footpath where in my mind I

envisioned those first friars and Poor Clare sisters walking

and joyfully proclaiming the Gospel.

Things became busier in Rome for the concluding

days of my pilgrimage. There was a visit to the Vatican

Museums and Sistine Chapel, a museum for the Order of

Capuchins, and entering the Holy Doors of the four major

basilicas—Saint Peter’s, St. John Lateran, Santa Maria

Maggiore, and St. Paul Outside the Walls.

During my last day in Rome I was present in St. Peter’s

Square for the Holy Father’s General Audience, about

which his talk was, “To visit the sick and imprisoned.”

I was personally heartened by the Pope’s words, as I

bring the Blessed Sacrament to homebound seniors and

chronically ill. The feeling I sensed from the Italians I

interacted with there was a refreshed view of the position

of the Pope, as Francis speaks with a personal candor

and forthrightness in line with what our American media

is reporting. In all, my pilgrimage journey was a great

benefit to my faith and invaluable to expanding my

worldview.

Praise be to God! Thank you, Our Lady of the Immaculate

Conception!

Regions and individuals from around the country submitted nominee names for consideration and Diane Creedon and Brother Alex Escalara, OFM Cap, know Father David well and shared his story with the National Fraternity by nominating him. Padre David won the 2016 award and attended the NAFRA Chapter in Florida recently to receive it.

Fr. David is a missionary from the Capuchin Franciscans Western America Province and has been serving the indigenous people in remote areas of Northern Mexico for over twenty years, bringing the Catholic faith to this part of the region and providing humanitarian aide with support from the Capuchin Province and many Capuchin Brothers serving in this region of its mission custody. Fr. David serves as Custos, Provincial, for the Capuchin Franciscans Missionaries in Mexico with a council of Capuchin Brothers including Br. Hector Jimenez, Julio Cesar Amparanza, Harold Snider, and Robert Barbato as its council, along with other Capuchin friars serving in this region.

Because this area of Northern Mexico has people who have been without a priest for decades but in many ways tried to maintain their faith, Fr. David travels to several locations in the mountainous regions between Sonora and Chihuahua, where Sinaloa drug cartels control one side, and Juarez drug cartels control the other. Padre David remains in the middle, in what is considered the largest and most dangerous drug growing (marijuana and heroin) area in the world. Poverty is prevalent and in the midst of the opulence of the drug traffickers. Fr. David is an example of someone as a Capuchin Brother who works tirelessly for peace and justice with humility, love, and perseverance with his brothers. Brother Alex from the Third Order Secular Franciscans has asked us to please pray for Fr. David along with the other Capuchin brothers working in this region of the world.

Amigos de los CapuchinosMilk for the Missions’ Program Alleviates Malnutrition in Sonora In November, a second shipment of powdered milk arrived in the city of Obregon, Sonora, Mexico for distribution among indigenous tribes of the region.

Fr. David Beaumont commented, “This donation is twice as big as the previous one, and we are having good results in reducing hunger among our children. The powdered milk is fortified with nutritional supplements that help meet basic human nourishment."

The Amigos Group of Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame, CA began the assistance program in 2015 as a fundraiser during Lent, and it has been a success with a record 2016 fundraising year, especially for the children of the parish who want to help other children in a concrete way.

This fundraiser will again take place at the parish during Lent of 2017. See page 20 for details. The Capuchin friars, who live in the mountainous town of Yécora have begun distribution for the indigenous peoples of the State of Sonora in Northern Mexico

Fr. José Armando Leyva, who was ordained to the presbyterate in August 2015 and assigned to St. Lawrence of Brindisi, LA, was recalled to the Mexico Custody in order to replace Fr. Coloco, OFM Cap, who recently died of a heart attack in October.

Fr. Leyva was ministering in the largely Hispanic parish in the Watts district of L.A. while learning English and American culture in preparation for his future assignment in the San

Joachin Valley to work with migrant workers. “It is a shame,” said Fr. Jesús Vela, pastor of the parish; “Fr. José Armando’s adjustment to the United States was going smoothly and he is loved by parishioners.”

Fr. Leyva hopes that a replacement is found for him so that he may return to America soon.

Fr. Leyva will assist Fr. Bill Trauba in the training of the postulants in Durango and assist the local clergy in pastoral ministry and administering the Sacrament of the Sick to those who are ill or dying in local hospitals. Currently the Custody has 4 men in first-year and 4 men in second year of the postulancy program.

On December 17, 2011, Br. Mauro Jöhri, General Minister of the Capuchin Franciscan Order, raised the missions of Our Lady of Angels Province in northern Mexico to the status of Custody. The new designation gave the American missionaries and native Mexican friars semi-autonomous control over their own affairs while under

the largely financial care of the California province.

The Custody was placed under the patronage of St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (meaning “the Talking Eagle”), who was canonized by St. John Paul II on July 31, 2002 and whose feast day is December 9. The friars will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the custody during their annual assembly in January.

Fifth Anniversary of Mexican Custody:

Las Posadas (Spanish: The Inns) is a religious festival celebrated in Mexico between December 16 and 24. It commemorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. Unable to find lodging in Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary took shelter in a stable where the Christ child was born.

Spanish evangelists began this tradition by teaching the Christmas story to the indigenous and reportedly to substitute it for rituals related to the birth of the god Huitzilopochtli. Las Posadas is celebrated in working class neighborhoods of cities and rural areas across Mexico.

Traditionally, every evening during the festival, people gather at a local church and a small child dressed as an angel leads a procession through the town streets. Children are dressed in silver and gold robes carrying lit candles and images of Mary and Joseph riding a donkey and a girl and boy are chosen to play the roles of Mary and Joseph and are dressed in costume. Adults carry candles, paper lanterns, and are accompanied by musicians. They visit selected homes and ask for lodging like Joseph and Mary. The rosary is prayed and at each stop, passages of scripture are read and Christmas carols are sung. Mass is held after the procession and children then break open piñatas filled with candy and toys. The piñatas are usually crafted in the form of a star which was said to have guided the three wise men of biblical tradition to the newborn Jesus.

For many children, Las Posadas is the most anticipated aspect of the Christmas season. At the end of a posada, guests receive a small gift called Aguinaldo, usually a package with cookies, dried fruit, and candy. Then carols, called villancicos, are sung concluding the celebration.
