CAPTURING DDDeeepppttthhh ooofff FFFiiieeelllddd CAMERA ASSIGNMENT
Now it is your turn to put your new knowledge of depth of field to use and try to capture it with your camera. Remember that the goal is to creatively control what the viewer focuses on in your photos.
R E V I E W O F T Y P E S O F D E P T H O F F I E L D :
DEEP-‐ Entire image is in-‐focus: SHALLOW (Foreground)-‐ Only the closest objects are in-‐focus:
SHALLOW (Middle ground)-‐ SHALLOW (Background)-‐ Only the objects BETWEEN foreground & Only the farthest away objects are in-‐focus: background are in-‐focus:
FOR SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD: FOR DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD: -‐ Use a LARGE APERTURE -‐ Use a SMALL APERTURE -‐ Use a LARGE FOCAL LENGTH -‐ Use a SHORT FOCAL LENGTH (zoom in all the way) (zoom out all the way) -‐ Stay a SHORT DISTANCE from the subject -‐ Keep a BIG DISTANCE from the subject (move in as close as you can) (move away as far as you can)
CAPTURING Depth of Field DIRECTIONS:
STEP 1 – Take 12 Photos That Demonstrate Variety in DEPTH OF FIELD -‐ Strive for HIGH QUALITY PHOTOS (interesting subject, good composition, not completely blurry, etc.). Use flash as little as possible, as it may affect your depth of field. -‐ Do not just take the same photo 3 times for each group. Change your subject, composition, lighting, angle, etc. Variety is important! -‐ If you have trouble getting the right exposure, you might need to adjust the ISO levels, Shutter Speed, and/or Exposure Compensation -‐ Carefully follow these directions to shoot the following groups of photos: GROUP A: DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD (rename your photos A1, A2, A3) Take 3 photos where EVERYTHING is in focus... foreground, middle ground, and background -‐ Make sure you still have a foreground and background (not everything should be far away) -‐ If using a DSLR camera, use a SMALL APERTURE (Aperture values of f/8 or more) -‐ If using a Point and Shoot camera, make sure the Focus Mode is set to INFINITY -‐ Use a SHORT FOCAL LENGTH (Zoom out all the way) -‐ Keep DISTANCE between you and the subject GROUP B: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ FOREGROUND (rename your photos B1, B2, B3) Take 3 photos where ONLY objects in the FOREGROUND are in focus -‐ This may take some experimentation... don’t get frustrated! -‐ If using a DSLR camera, use a LARGE APERTURE (Aperture values of f/4 or less) -‐ If using a Point-‐and-‐Shoot camera: -‐ Set the Focus Mode to MACRO -‐ Set the Focus/Exposure Zone to CENTER -‐ Aim the white square in the center of the screen at the object you want to be in focus -‐ Use a LONGER FOCAL LENGTH (Try zooming in different amounts) -‐ Stay a SHORT DISTANCE from the subject (Move in as close as you can) GROUP C: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ MIDDLE GROUND (rename your photos C1, C2, C3) Take 3 photos where objects in the foreground and background are blurry and objects BETWEEN THEM are in focus -‐ If using a DSLR camera, use a LARGE APERTURE (Aperture values of f/4 or less) -‐ If using a Point-‐and-‐Shoot camera: -‐ Set the Focus Mode to MACRO or AUTO -‐ Set the Focus/Exposure Zone to CENTER -‐ Aim the white square in the center of the screen at the objects you want to be in focus -‐ Use a LONGER FOCAL LENGTH (Try zooming in different amounts) -‐ If your foreground/middle ground/background are all blending together, try to put more distance between them (space objects out more) GROUP D: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ BACKGROUND (rename your photos D1, D2, D3) Take 3 photos where ONLY objects in the BACKGROUND are in focus -‐ If using a DSLR camera, use a LARGE APERTURE (Aperture values of f/4 or less) -‐ If using a Point-‐and-‐Shoot camera: -‐ Set the Focus Mode to MACRO or AUTO -‐ Set the Focus/Exposure Zone to CENTER -‐ Aim the white square in the center of the screen at the objects you want to be in focus -‐ Use a LONGER FOCAL LENGTH (Try zooming in different amounts) -‐ You MUST have objects in the foreground that are out of focus for this group of photos -‐ If you have trouble with this, try moving the camera even closer to the foreground objects
STEP 2 – Import Your Pictures to Your Computer Plug your camera into your computer and import all the photos for this assignment into iPhoto. If you took more than the required 12 photos, at this time you can choose the best to turn in. If any photos need ROTATED to a different angle, do that at this time. STEP 3 – Export Pictures to a Folder & Upload -‐Create a FOLDER on your computer in the following format:
[CLASS HOUR] Capturing Depth of Field [YOUR LAST NAME, FIRST INITIAL] Example: “1 Capturing Depth of Field Smith J”
-‐Export your 12 PHOTOS you’ve chosen from iPhoto into this folder (do not change photo size) -‐RENAME the photos within the folder according to this sheet... VERY IMPORTANT! -‐Attach these photos to an EMAIL to your teacher
EXAMPLES: GROUP A: DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD (rename your photos A1, A2, A3) Take 3 photos where EVERYTHING is in focus... foreground, middle ground, and background:
GROUP B: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ FOREGROUND (rename your photos B1, B2, B3) Take 3 photos where ONLY objects in the FOREGROUND are in focus:
GROUP C: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ MIDDLE GROUND (rename your photos C1, C2, C3) Take 3 photos where objects in the foreground and background are blurry and objects BETWEEN THEM are in focus:
GROUP D: SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD-‐ BACKGROUND (rename your photos D1, D2, D3) Take 3 photos where ONLY objects in the BACKGROUND are in focus:
