The Subject and The Predicate are members of the Completion Team (AKA parts of a sentence), and they have the power to form strong complete sentences.

• The Subject: the someone or something the sentence is about.

• The Predicate: tells (verbalizes) something about the subject.

THE SUBJECT• SUPER POWER:

• The Subject has the power to be someone or something that a sentence is talking about.

•  FINDING THE SUBJECT: • To find the subject of a sentence, ask

yourself: Who or What is the sentence talking about?

• The subject can take the form of:  • A person• A place• A thing

THE SUBJECT

Super ExamplesWrite the example and

underline the Subject of the sentence.

1. Mr. Muscles can bench-press a lot.

2. The capital city is protected.

3. The time bomb is ticking.4. Greed is a powerful force.

Last Facts• Weaknesses:

• If The Subject is ever separated from The Predicate, he becomes incomplete, and that makes him weak. 

• Watch out for an attack from that crumbly villain, The Fragment.

• Super Teamwork• Always works together with The

Predicate because they get their strengths and powers from working with each other.

THE PREDICATE

• SUPER POWERS: • The Predicate has the power to

verbalize a statement about the subject of a sentence.

•  FINDING THE PREDICATE: • To find the predicate, ask yourself:

what is the sentence verbalizing (expressing in words) about the subject?

THE PREDICATE

Last Facts• Weaknesses:

• If The Predicate is ever separated from The Subject, she becomes incomplete, and that makes her weak.

THE FRAGMENT

• SUPER POWERS:• The Fragment sneaks into your

writing and makes your sentences crumble and fall apart, just like he does.

• If a sentence is missing either the subject or predicate, then it’s not really a sentence—it’s only a weak fragment.

THE FRAGMENTSuper Examples

Write the example and fix it by adding either a subject or a

predicate.

1. The Mole King an his legions.•  The Mole King and his legions are

attacking.

2. Eating up the entire city.•  Hipposaurus Rex is eating up the

entire city.

3. With his x-ray vision.•  View Master spotted the bomb

with his x-ray vision.

STOPPING THE FRAGMENT:

• He is no match for the combined strength of The Subject and The Predicate.  • If you don't want your

sentences to crumble and fall apart—never let The Fragment break up the Completion Team!
