I I II III II Patents Artificial lung membrane and device A composite membrane which avoids blood plasma leakage, maintains heparin action and which does not suffer loss of the coating even after prolonged use is the object of this invention. The basis is a hydrophobic polyoleflnlc membrane to which fine particles are attached within the membrane's pores. The particles are more hydrophflic than is the basic membrane: they are made of an acrylic polymer such as polymethyl methacrylate. Their attributes also include blocompatibflity, which can be expressed as the property of neither antsgonls~ig the immune system of the body nor of degrading blood ceils or plasma. Membrane thickness is 5-80 microns, porosity is 20--80% and average pore diameter is 0.01-5 microns. The hydrophflic particles' average size is smaller than that of the membrane's pores. They are fixed in position either by partially coating with a functional resin (JP 4033661) or by partly dissolving them in acetone, then evaporating the solvent (JP 4033660}. The packs themselves are sealed and therefore not open to the atmosphere, but the packaging material may be permeable to oxygen. More problematically, the design of some packs may require free space above the liquid, which space will initially be occupied by air. The oxygen content of the air can lead to spoilage or 'off flavours developing in the bulk liquid. The effect on wine in a partly-drunk bottle follows from the same reason. The effects of the oxygen are directly proportional to the quantity present. If the pressure in the container is reduced, as when using a hand vacuum pump to remove most of the air from a bottle of wine, then the wine survives (perhaps at the cost of sacrificing some of the bouquet). If the air is purged by replacing it with nitrogen, which is a technique that can be used for wine, milk or frult-Juice, then m/~Imal, but spotlage starts as soon as the package is opened. The present invention consists of a .q~nall buoyant cyiindrlcal capsule which can float in the alr-space of a milk or fruit-Juice package. It has a weighted base of acetal resin, so th_e_t the other face is consistently uppermost and extends above the liquid level. The body of the capsule is impermeable, but the top face is covered by a gas-permeable but liquid-resistant membrane of polyethylene or the du Pont material Tyvek. Inside the capsule is a n~Ixture of iron filings, dry silica gel and silica gel which has been impregnated with a sodium ch/orlde solution. This mixture is an effic/ent absorbent of oxygen, and has the attribute of not reacting instantly with the air: the dry sWca gel inhibits the reaction by keeping the relative hum/dlty in the _mA~s of the mixture at a low level. This allows the mixture to be packed into the capsules without significant deterioration, after which the capsules can be sealed and then kept fresh almost indefinitely before being unwrapped and placed into a carton of mlik or fruit Juice. The scale of the canister relative to the carton of milk or fruit Juice can be seen in the Figure. The capsule can also be inserted in a part-ful/bottle of wine, to prevent or delay its oxidation.
